Knight-Comander Gallien Tulles set foot on Alderney as a soft breeze blew across the docks. His men followed after him as he made his way to the base camp, Fort Bauquemare.
Alderney had been re-conquered in short order. Only a few isolated pockets of Wildlings and settlements that were all too eager to accept Confederated Duchy overlordship. Now though? It was time. Guernsey, Herm, Sark, and Jersey. They were next. But unlike Alderney? They would require an overwhelming show of force.
"Welcome Knight-Commander!" Governor Sophie Auvray said, welcoming Tulles and his retinue.
"I assume you're here to finally get us underway?"
"With orders from Duke Rainulf Varley himself" Tulles confirmed, heading into the base with the island governor.
"Our scouts" Auvray stated, "have reported Jersey and Gurnsey have been utterly overrun with wildlings." Sark and Herm seem to be deserted.
"So" Tulles said, looking over a map of the Channel Islands.
"We can set up bases of operation on Sark and Herm. Use them to coordinate our efforts on the larger islands."
"Ideally, yes. But our reports only come from ship-based observations. There could be a Wildling presence in the interiors."
"How haven't Sark and Herm been fully scouted?" Tulles asked, this news catching him by surprise.
"Our scouts refuse to land" Auvray replied bluntly.
"After that scouting party to Gurnsey vanished."
Tulles just shook his head.
"These fucking savages..."
"Many people from Britain and France fled to the islands after the flash" Auvray shrugged.
"They thought they'd be safe. Instead?"
"Bands of savages" Tulles muttered.
"But they won't stop us. Not again. Duke Varley is willing to use the might of our forces to overrun them. Normandy will be whole again for the first time in 1200 years."
Auvray gulped.
"Overrun?" she asked.
Tulles nodded.
"We've tried to re-civilize these savages. We've tried to contain them. Trade with them. We've tried to intimidate them. Nothing takes. The Duke wants us to use the full might at our disposal. Those that survive? They'll have an easy choice to make. But the Confederated Duchy is done with half measures."
Auvray nodded. It was inevitable, she supposed, that it would come to this.
"I'll have the garrison up and running at once, Knight-Commander."
"Excellent Governor. The Army arrives in three days."
Auvray nodded and made her leave, allowing Tulles to study the maps again. Such small specs of land, but they were theirs. Should be anyway. And besides, the Duchy couldn't afford for them to fall into anyone else's hands.
