11 PM, Sion, Ceretis Local Time

The Camerlengo, Heinrik Josef Neidermeyer, known affectionately as Father H, was in his office when he received a call from the Pontiff's secretary, summoning him to his quarters.

He entered the Pontifical Stateroom, and found Pope Solomon laying on the bed. He had been in seclusion for several months since the accident. He spent his days praying and resting.

"Your Holiness."

He bowed before the pope.

"Father Heinrik, I believe it is time. I have grown weak since the accident. However, God has told me, that it is my time to cease. I am abdicating effective immediately."

He coughed before continuing.

"God will select the chosen one in due time."

"Yes Your Holiness. I will communicate this to the cardinals and the brothers and sisters in the square."

He paused before speaking.

"If I may, Your Holiness, the ring and seal need to be modified to prevent forgery."

Solomon handed him the ring, and directed him to the seal on his desk. He placed them into his pocket.

The Camerlengo exited the chamber, and went to the public balcony where Solomon would usually give speeches or greet the crowd. He spoke into the microphone.

"Pope Solomon has decided to abdicate the papacy today. We will begin the process of selecting a new Pontiff immediately. All cardinals of the Courantist church are called to Sion. May God Bless Pope Emeritus Solomon."

HIS HOLINESS, POPE SOLOMON IV RESIGNS

SION, Jul 8 -- His Holiness, Solomon IV has announced his resignation tonight. Fr. Camerlengo Heinrik Josef Niedermeyer reportedly was summoned to the chambers of His Holiness, still recovering emotionally from the tragic accident that befell him several months ago, where the Holy Father, who had spent his time since the accident secluded, praying and resting, indicated his wishes.

"Pope Solomon has decided to abdicate the papacy today." Father Niedermeyer stated, in a brief announcement. "We will begin the process of selecting a new Pontiff immediately. I call upon all the cardinals of the world to convene in the Apostolic Palace to decide the future of our sacred church. That is all. May God Bless Pope Emeritus Solomon."

It is expected that the Pope Emeritus will continue to pray and rest in his retirement- one which has been well-earned considering his tenure as one of the longest-reigning Popes in the history of the Church.
As the Church has now entered sede vacante, it is likely that an emergency meeting of the College of Cardinals will be called tonight or tomorrow to begin Conclave, so the College may decide who the next Archbishop of Sion will be. It is believed that Cardinal Villads Dalgaard of Prydania will serve as Cardinal-Elector.

Apostolic Palace, Sion, Ceretis

After all the cardinals had entered the collegiate chamber, he closed and locked the heavy door, signaling the commencement of Conclave.

"My brothers, the time has come. Before we begin, the Cardinal chosen at random to oversee the voting process is Cardinal Villads Dalgard of the Prydanian See."

He reached into the bag in his pocket, and emptied it out onto a wooden board on the altar. The ring and seal of Solomon IV sat there.

He picked them up, and passed by each individual cardinal, showing them that the items had been marked with a crucifix to symbolize that Solomon is now Pope Emeritus. It took him several minutes to parade the items through the room, but he finished nonetheless.

"It is done. We may begin, Your Eminence"

He backed off, and allowed the Cardinal to take control of the process.

Villads Dalgard breathed deep. He couldn't help but look down as the ring and seal of Solomon IV was smashed. He knew he was happy. Solomon was in Heaven, in the embrace of God. Still, he missed him. His calming presence. Solomon...Jonah...he had been a light in the darkness during the years of Syndicalist rein in Prydania. A rock, a pillar of the world had been lost. And now God called on him to oversee the replacement of the man who he wondered if ever could be replaced. He smiled softly, rising to address the Conclave.

"We meet today, brothers, to choose a new supreme pontiff." He paused for a moment.
"The Church Solomon left is one of strength, and yet humility. I look across the world, and I see so much hope. Hope in spite of the darkness that is constantly tugging at the hearts of men. Solomon left us a Church that has reached the hearts and minds across the world. I pray, brothers, that we will secure the future he has trusted us with."

He paused again, for a brief moment.
"We will begin with the oath."

"Et ego, Villads, Cardinalis Dalgard, spondeo, voveo, ac iuro. Sic me Deus adiuvet et haec Sancta Dei Evangelia, quae manu mea tango."[note]Translation: And I, Villads, Cardinal Dalgard, promise, vow and swear. Thus, may God help me and these Holy Gospels which I touch with my hand.[/note] He gently touched his fingers to the Gospels.

He waited as each Cardinal, in order of seniority, rose to swear the same oath as they touched the Gospels themselves.

He nodded when the Conclave had finished, sitting down. The voting would begin.

OOC: The process for the election will be as such. I will provide you the ballot. It will have to be in English to work with both board policy and forum software. So I apologize for that. Still, we will try to do the best we can given those limitations.

Anyway this will work much like the secret ballot in a TNP election. You will send me the ballot in private, in PM. Your ballot will include the IC Cardinal you wish to vote for. All Cardinals are eligible, but your character may not vote for himself.
After all of the votes have been cast? I will post them. You will use the random number generator to verify your vote, but I stress that you keep it private.

Now. If a majority of votes are for a candidate? That candidate will be made Pope. If no one candidate reaches a majority? We will hold an IC continuation of the vote and repeat the process.

Here is the Random Number Generator. Use this for the Ballot ID #

Here is the roster of the College of Cardinals. All Cardinals are a valid option, save for Villads Dalgard. Who is overseeing the election. If you have a Cardinal on that list? You may vote, but not for that character. It must be for another cardinal.

It is with a heavy heart that I must pass my condolences on to the Courantists of both Prydania and Eras as a whole. Pope Solomon IV was a humble man who none the less inspired others to greatness and sacrifice. He'll be remembered fondly in Prydania and beyond for the mark he left on our world. All Prydanians, regardless of faith, have Solomon and the people of the Courantist Church in their hearts today.

Sincerely,

Villads Dalgard counted the ballots, unable to believe what had transpired. He counted again and again, to make sure he had not been in error. Now, his eyes blurred, he was sure of what he was seeing. A new pontiff had been elected. On the first ballot. He struggled to remember the last time that had happened from his studies.

"Brothers, we have chosen a Pontiff."

Dalgard walked up to Thor Vjullnur.
"Acceptasne electionem de te canonice factam in Summum Pontificem?"[note]Translation: Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?[/note] he asked the man who had miraculously won on the first ballot.

Villads turned to Frederik Rønning, who had helped with the collection of the ballots.
"Cardinal, please. Inform the world of our miraculous decision."

Cardinal Dalgaard turned to the new Pope, almost relieved to see this miracle play out.

"Quo nomine vis vocari?"[note]Translation: What do you wish to be called?[/note] he asked.

Frederik nodded at Villads. "Of course, brother." He then took the ballots and burned them clean, not using the dyes that would otherwise make the smoke black.

Soon after, after one of the quickest elections in the history of the Church, white smoke billowed out of the chimney of the Perugine Chapel, as the world watched.

As the Conclave left the Perugine Chapel and entered Saint Joshua's Basilica, Frederik prepared for what could possibly be one of the most important announcements of the decade, and what would certainly be one of the most important announcements of his career. He had been chosen to formally announce the election of Pope John IX. He breathed in, closed his eyes, and clutched his crucifix, offering a brief prayer before going out to the basilica balcony to address the people.

"Your Eminence", a priest said, holding a large paper with the words he was to read, "Don't you need this?" Frederik shook his head. "All I need to make this statement is God's love, and courage. I need no scripts, brother." He smiled, and patted the priest's shoulder, before turning to the balcony. Walking out, he saw the crowds, cheering in ecstatic delight, in the squares below Saint Joshua's. Frederik took hold of his microphone and began to speak, as the crowds hushed.

"Chers frères et soeurs. ("Dear brothers and sisters".) Kjære broderen og sjvøsteren. (Same as above.) Estote fratres et sorores. (Same as above.) Dear brothers and sisters...anuntio vobis gaudium magnum..." ("I announce to you with great joy...") The crowd cheered, and then quieted. Frederik breathed in, and as bold as he could say it, he declared,

"HABEMUS PAPAM!" ("We have a Pope!")

The crowd cheered again, even louder this time. Frederik felt a tear of happiness fall down his cheek, as he thought about the great Pope Solomon, and all he had done for the world, and of the miraculous election of his successor. He then continued, "Eminentissimum ac reverendissimum dominum, dominum Thor...sanctae ceretiae ecclesiae cardinalem Vjullnur!" ("The most eminent and reverend lord Thor, Cardinal of the Holy Ceretian Church Vjullnur!")

The crowd cheered once more. Frederik noticed Goyanean flags waving harder and faster than the others; no doubt this was because not only was Goyanes a deeply Courantist country, but despite this, Vjullnur was the first Goyanean to ever become Pope. He then continued, wrapping up the announcement with the declaration of Vjullnur's choice for his papal name.

"Qui sibi nomen imposuit..." ("He chose the name...") he paused for a moment. "IOANNES!" ("John!")

As the crowd cheered again, he bowed his head and then left the balcony. Now all that was left was for the Holy Father himself to come in his new white papal vestments and address the people.

As Cardinal Frederik read aloud the announcement to the crowds below in the Basilica, Pope John and Father H were preparing in the weeping room. He donned his new, pontifical attire, and kissed the crucifix. When Frederik had finished his announcement, he knew it was time. Father H grabbed the ceremonial crucifix, and walked towards the doors of the balcony.

The crowd began cheering at the sheer sight of figures moving behind the red velvet drapes covering the entrance. The Vallish Guardsmen moved the curtains aside, and held open the doors. Father H walked out first, carrying the crucifix, and holding it high up for all to see.

Pope John walked outside. It was the loudest cheering the man had ever heard in his life. He stood there, embracing the applaud for a minute, before speaking into the microphone.

"Brothers and Sisters, Let us pray for our beloved Pope Emeritus Solomon, who has abdicated."

He paused for a moment.

"Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

"For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever."

"Amen."

The crowd shouted Amen after the prayer. Pope John knew it was time, and he returned back to the stateroom, waving before disappearing for the day.

I have spent the last few days in prayer over the death of Patriarch Solomon IV. His soul has gone to the eternal rest and he has been accepted into the presence of the lord. In these times of sorrow it is important for all followers of the Mesjasz to remember that we are all children of the same God. The Church of Saint Azulnais shall burn an extra candle, in every temple, church, and cathedral, for our departed brother.

And congratulations to the new Patriarch, John IX, and may we continue to serve our Heavenly Father, one with each other, hands clasped in sacred communion, east and west, remembering that our love for God is stronger than our earthly disagreements.

Et benedictio Dei omnipotentis, Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti, descendat super vos et maneat semper.[note]Translation: And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit come down on you and remain with you always.[/note]

Holy Patriarch of Scion,

I find myself still praying for your predecessor as you take up his mantle. I give thanks to God that the College of Cardinals elected such a humble man of faith. I pray for the continued goodwill between our faiths in the name of the better Eras for all mankind. I pray that the world you eventually leave will be able to thank you for being better than the one that saw your ascension. May God guide you through your time as His messenger for your Church.

POPE JOHN IX MIRACULOUSLY ELECTED ON FIRST BALLOT

SION, Jul 10 -- The cardinals met in the Perugine Chapel as expected earlier today and chose as the new Archbishop of Sion, on the first ballot with a supermajority of votes in his favor, a man from almost "the end of the world" - the first Goyanean ever to be elected to the papacy. Thor Vjullnur, now the former archbishop of Gojannesstad and former Cardinal of the See of Goyanes, has become His Holiness, Pope John - the ninth pontiff to take that name.

The new Pope appeared on the balcony over the entrance to St. Joshua's Basilica less than an hour after white smoke poured from the chimney above the Perugine Chapel, signalling that the cardinals had made their choice; and mere minutes after Cardinal Frederik Rønning of Valland announced the result of the election. Dressed in his new white robes, the Holy Father seemed pensive and immensely grateful as he looked out at the sea of jubilant humanity in the square.

Instead of making a long speech, the Holy Father kept his inaugural speech short and humble- dedicating its entirety to his now-retired predecessor, Solomon IV, and then going on to recite the Lord's Prayer, before retiring to the Apostolic Palace. Since these events earlier tonight, resulting from an election that began and concluded on this same day, many have called the election of Pope John IX a miracle, and it seems that the faithful are deeply optimistic about the future.

Following his election, the Holy Father began his pontificate with a stream of appointments. Cardinal Rønning was appointed Cardinal Secretary of State, Cardinal Matthew Araghanes was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and bishop Sigurt Åndsby was appointed to replace His Holiness in the position of Cardinal of the See of Goyanes and Archbishop of Gojannesstad, among other appointments.

Numerous religious leaders from across the globe have congratulated the Holy Father on his election, including the Shaddaist Dayyan, Midbar Gadi, and Konstantin VIII, Pentarch of the Church of Saint Azulnais. Political leaders from various nations, such as Tobias III of Prydania and Diego II of Highton, have joined in congratulating the new Supreme Pontiff.
