The Open Parliament
The Open Parliament, the legislature of our region, has seen quite a bit of action over the past few months. Here's a quick summary of what's been going on.​

Passed:
Law Commission and Library Act
  • This Act establishes a Law Commission that oversees the Library of Parliament, makes recommendations to keep laws up-to-date with the needs of the time, creates and administers law examinations to States that wish to represent others in legal proceedings to protect the public from malpractice, oversees admissions into the Bar of the Court of Justice, disciplines members of the Bar for misconduct, and regulates the practice of law.
Voting Reform and Fair Political Practices Act
  • This Act codifies years of election precedent and tradition to ensure the fair, accurate, and impartial administration of all elections and legislative votes in the Social Liberal Union, including nominations, ballot specifications, voting locations, tabulation, and resolution of voting controversies. This Act also ensures basic standards for political campaigning are upheld, and additionally provides for a voluntary Code of Fair Campaign Practices.
Resolution Cleanup Resolution
  • This Resolution makes slight amendments to early Resolutions of Parliament to ensure that the Resolutions in question are consistent with modern legislative standards, and repeals obsolete early Resolutions.
Constitution Day Resolution
  • This Resolution establishes 20 May as Constitution Day, commemorating the passage of the Third Constitution on 20 May 2017.
On the Dismissal of New Lettia from the Government of the Social Liberal Union
  • This Resolution dismisses New Lettia from the Government of the Social Liberal Union due to incapacitation.
On the Nomination of Kanoria to the Eggic Order of Merit
  • This Resolution inducts Kanoria into the Eggic Order of Merit. Named after Eggy216, our longest serving World Assembly Delegate, this Order recognizes those who have shown "exemplary long-term service as a government officer."

Elections
It's election season in the Social Liberal Union. Here's the rundown.​

Speaker of the Union Election
The Speaker of the Union is the chief legislator of the Social Liberal Union and the presiding officer of the Open Parliament.

In this election, the candidates were:
  • Hirematia, then-Deputy Minister of Domestic Affairs
  • Koiho
  • Helvurium
  • Brys Questions
At the end of the voting period, the vote tally was:
  • Hirematia: 8
  • Koiho: 3
  • Helvurium: 2
  • Brys Questions: 1
As such, Hirematia was elected as the 13th Speaker of the Union.

Chancellor Election
The Chancellor is the presiding officer of the Court of Justice of the Social Liberal Union.

In early May, Chancellor New Lettia suddenly ceased all activity on NationStates. As such, he was declared incapacitated 2 weeks later, and an election was triggered.

In this election, the candidates were:
  • Anaaxes, then-Speaker of the Union
  • Brys Questions
  • Helvurium
  • Castillecrest
At the end of the voting period, the vote tally was:
  • Anaaxes: 13
  • Helvurium: 3
  • Castillecrest: 2
  • Brys Questions: 1
As such, Anaaxes was elected as the 4th Chancellor.

Delegate Election
The World Assembly Delegate is the chief executive officer of the Social Liberal Union and the presiding officer of the Cabinet and Administration.

The incumbent Delegate, Courelli, has, as of July 1, 2018, reached the term limit of two 4 month terms in this office. As such, Courelli will be ineligible to run in the July 2018 Delegate Election.
