"The Island in the North, The Island in the North, Where they suck your marrow dry, and tear your flesh apart."

Anya looked from the window of a ruined building and saw thin layer of snow stretched over the city’s streets, not a single footstep or tire-track disturbed the seamless blanket and, though peaceful and almost enchanting at first, the snow meant even surviving would become near impossible. It meant Anya had to leave Rostov soon. Before the winter swallowed it whole.

Anya knew she couldn’t leave yet though, she had to get to the radio station first but that wouldn’t take long, it was only a few blocks away now. She got up hastily, throwing a satchel-bag over her shoulder and grabbing a small handgun, and left the building; she was glad, the constant fear of having rubble fall onto her was beginning to get tiring. Outside, it appeared to be colder than she had first thought as she felt the cold pierce through her bones in seconds.

“I hate this fucking place.” Anya muttered to herself, while looking at the corpses of executed men and women lining the street.

As Anya walked, she contemplated. She could never understand why it had to be Korova that was reduced to nothing, that was reduced to infighting and greed, that was abandoned by other countries and left to rot and collapse. It was abundantly clear that any gods had abandoned Korova long ago. The question which toyed with her mind most though was the wondering as to why nobody cared about Korova, were the lives of the millions suffering each day meaningless to the nations of the world? She couldn’t comprehend it. Maybe it was best to not dwell on it...

She could see the station now, an unsuspecting church surrounded by houses. Conveniently, it looked as if the building had been untouched by any of the city’s gangs meaning her only worry now was the worry that the station wouldn’t be powered properly. And if she could get inside. Which she couldn’t, it was locked from the inside. Anya tried to smash the lock with her gu-

A bullet flew at her from behind.

Anya lept behind the brick fence and examined what she could see - there was no bullet, it was a tranquiliser dart. What the fuck? was her only thought, who would tranquilise her and why? Her heart was racing now, she was terrified and determined to get into the church, she wouldn’t be stopped now. Not when she was this close to the end.

She stuck her hand over the fence, fired her gun several times, and prayed.
