SillyString: Tough on Justice

I am honestly not sure what to say that I haven't said before.

I've been on the court before, and enjoyed it greatly. I've been other things too, but usually didn't enjoy them as much. I take the dignity of the office very seriously.

Please vote for me.

Since my memory is shot beyond all recognition, how strict are you/do you plan to be in following the given timelines for the proceeding of a court case? The current judiciary does not seem very strict on holding to their given timeline at all, and hand out extensions like Oprah hands out car keys.

In general, I believe that flexibility on the question of timeline is a good thing - not for its own sake, but in recognition of the fact that this is (allegedly) an online game, and that the participants (again, allegedly) have real lives outside of it where sometimes things happen unexpectedly.

I do think there is a difference between an extension granted because something came up and one side finds themselves genuinely and unexpectedly unavailable, and one granted because one side did not bother to get around to doing their part of the work on time. I also think that character judgements can play a pretty important role when assessing whether to grant an extension - someone who is known to be trustworthy and reliable ought to get more benefit of the doubt around the circumstances of an extension than, say, JAL someone who is known to stretch the truth.

This changes a bit when we come to the border between court terms; for various reasons I think it's better that a trial be wrapped up without the court changing, so I would likely be more critical of extension requests that would cause the trial to extend into the next term.

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, real life cannot be paused, so the need for extensions is sometimes necessary, I agree.

I enjoy seeing someone of your level of experience running for office, and I can tell this election will already be interesting. Best of luck!

Scorch:
Is there anything that you would like to change or reform regarding the court if you are elected?
Yes, I think the Adopted Court Rules need a bit of tweaking (but not wholesale overhaul). I also think there are some organizational things that can be improved - for example, right now, it's basically impossible to find prior criminal cases without trawling through the archives for hours. I would like to find a way to collect these into an easier-to-navigate format.

Gracius Maximus:
Will you explain your reasoning in bargaining the current trial to a lesser offence?
Sorry for the late response. I have been somewhat... distracted... this week.

When I filed charges originally, I opted to file with every possible crime I thought reasonably could be argued as applying to the defendant's actions. I now believe this decision to have been in error, for various reasons, including the fact that I did not ever expect to see him convicted on all six counts, nor did I think the sentence required for all six would have been reasonable.

I had decided to drop some of the charges while retaining others, regardless of what the defendant chose to do. Specifically, I was intending to pursue Conspiracy to Commit Treason and Conspiracy to Commit Grosse Misconduct once the recess was over. However, seeing as the term was nearing an end and we would soon have a new court and a new attorney general, I did not wish for the trial to face further delays and opted to offer a plea deal to the defendant - one that I believe will be able to be sentenced in a way that is justified by the crime committed - more lenient than I could have pursued with both conspiracy charges, perhaps, but not (I believe) inappropriate.

You were distracted during the trial when Guy disappeared; you were distracted this week. Is that a good indicator for your term as Justice?

I know the election is now over, but I do want to address this.

Nah.

I believed Guy had a sufficient handle on the trial that I did not need to pay terribly close attention to how it was going. That belief did not work out, and although I did step in when I realized it was necessary, I do accept criticism that I should have been paying more attention all along. I dropped the ball.

Last week was another matter entirely - following the results of the US election, quite frankly, I was caught in a mixture of shock, despair, and fear, and it took me several days to begin to adjust enough that I could care about much except trying to drown out the world. That's not something I feel the need to apologize for. Sometimes, life just sucks.
