In 1861 Matilda Hakon, the Princess in Exile of the Kingdom of Serzulem, inherited the Kingdom of Askyrre from her maternal grandfather, Aegric II. Her ascension meant more than just the end of the Galvitic Dynasty, it also meant that the Hakon family now had a foothold from which to regain their ancestral lands. Matilda prostrated herself before the Esplandian King Irwin III and begged for his aid in her war to restore the lands her family had lost over half a century before. Irwin tentatively agreed, though he could promise no military support without the Landesgrad agreeing.
Though with all great undertakings, moving an army into the Tajin region was a massive undertaking. The Landesgrad at that time was controlled by the Isolationist Party, and they voted against military aid for retaking Serzulem. Irwin sent the Huskavrls, Esplandia's special elite soldiers, to fight on behalf of Matilda. The Huskavrls answered directly to the Crown and could therefore be deployed without the consent of Landesgrad.
The Tajins resisted with passion, winning a number of strategic victories that bogged Matilda's efforts to a standstill. Fighting continued, but without military support from Esplandia, there would be no victory.
In the meantime Irwin was slowly trying to purge the Landesgrad of the isolationists and give his own lords and supporters the power they'd need to back his royal prerogatives. In 1875 he traded two Dragoon class Battleships to the Democratic Island and paid 12,000,000 Crown Florents for a windswept spit of land from which he hoped to be able to field a small air squadron to aid the Queen of Askyrre. An airfield was built and the bombers and fighters proved effective against the Tajin military, which did not have an air force of any sort at the time.
In the meantime a naval base was built on the point of land at the north of the Democratic Island. Construction continued on making the base larger with all the amenities needed to field and repair a fleet of ships and aircraft. The construction wasn't completed until the reign of Henry III in 1887. By then the Landesgrad had become more willing to acquiesce to the King. Henry turned the area into the County of Port Auguston, with a number of baronies beneath, and appointed his supporters to the positions. Their votes now swung the balance of power well into his side.
By 1888 Esplandia had deployed nearly 20,000 troops into Tajis and the War of Restoration had began. The war lasted five years but Serzulem was restored with Matilda's daughter Isabella and Henry's son Jeffrey on the throne. Esplandia would be entangled in Tajin politics from that day on and all because of Esplandia's acquisition of Port Auguston.
