PROLOGUE

It is 1655. The world colonial game is in full swing as the Kianese Empire of the west and the Syrixian Empire of the east compete for global power. Emperor Akbar IX orders the invasion of the neighboring Empire of Shei Ren, a small island nation with a dense population nearly free of disease and with wealth nearly matching Syrixia itself, all of its colonies included. However, Emperor Wei Gao is aware of the Syrixian threat. He calls the Imperial Council of advisors at Laoshan to help him decide the matter.

His main advisor, Dao Shunglang, advises him not to fight fire with fire, as the barbarians of the world outside Shei Ren, the Abode of Peace, preach. Instead, Shunglang advises the Sheirenese use tactics, assassins, saboteurs, and espionage to bring down the Syrixians. But, Gao has his own plans. The day is April 13. There are clear skies outside, and very little humidity. All seems fine across the tiny empire. Near the city of Chongpu, on the tip of the Chuzhao Peninsula north of Jinqi and east of Laoshan and Qinghai, the Syrixians prepare to make their landing.

They're nervous. However, their commander, Mukesh Dayani, tells them that Shei Ren is a nation of great wealth. Oils, spices, silks, diamonds, other precious metals, and more abound on the island. This switches morale from bad to good to overflowing. When Commander Dayani finally makes the landing, he expects opposition. He is met, however, with a surprise. Gao had decided to meet the Syrixian legions with nothing but a group of religious scholars and cooks, and invite the Syrixians to eat. He wanted to show the Syrixians that Shei Ren knew only peace.

It worked brilliantly. The Syrixians are dumbfounded. At first, some recommend they play it cautiously. Maybe these were warrior monks, or a different type of soldier. Others suggest that this was not what the Sheirenese had expected, as there were only scholars and cooks here, and said they should just charge. However Commander Dayani had heard about Shei Ren before. He eventually decides to take a small attachment of guards and talk to this group of Sheirenese that looked nothing like what the Syrixians thought they would look like.

THE DIALOGUE

Syrixians: We come from the greatest empire in all the world. We have laid claim to many parts of it; and have very much so profited from them. A small, independent island near such an empire is rather an embarassment.

Sheirenese: We welcome you to our island. Your words do not concern us. You are here to conquer, are you not?

Syrixians: You do not have to be fully annexed. Your culture is too different from ours, yet your island is still close. You must pay tribute to our Golden Emperor, or be destroyed.

Sheirenese: Your golden emperor is just one man, who receives his gold through mass colonialism. Our golden empire is rich beyond all notion, and yet we are confined only to one island; which we have decided for ourselves.

Syrixians: Rich or not rich, your island is small, and perhaps your own army is smaller. The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must. Are you even soldiers? What makes your people not cower, as other weak folk do?

Sheirenese: We will not fight you, nor will we kneel to you. We invite you into our lands not as subjects, but as equals. We have no soldiers here. We do not waste our time and submit to barbarism as soldiers do. This is Shei Ren. We are neutral and independent.

Syrixians: If we were to accept that, we would look weak. It would seem as that even though we could conquer great swaths of territory and create a great colonial empire, we could not conquer a small island to our near south.

Sheirenese: Your reputation will be harmed even more should you invade. You will alarm other neutral and independent states like our own, who will become hostile to you for fear of being invaded themselves. Do you want more enemies to deal with?

Syrixians: Other "neutral and independent" states on are unlikely to act in such a way. It would not be their problem to deal with, as they are neutral. It is the great colonies and the disgruntled subjects that our empire has already conquered that are more likely to take up arms against us. And it is certain they would not dare.

Sheirenese: It would be shameful and cowardly of us to simply submit. Our Empire has lasted thousands of years, much longer than your own.

Syrixians: Your stakes are too high for you to worry about shame. A small island paying tribute is better than one totally ruled by foreigners, is it not?

Sheirenese: Your people are strong, but we shall not entertain you with war so you may show that. We interact with foreign peoples in different ways.

Syrixians: Such ways include?

Sheirenese: We have brought scholars, cooks, and noblemen here to meet with you, rather than a mob of men who wish to die. We care only for peace. Our Emperor entreats you to join us for a feast.

Syrixians: Very well. However, do not expect this conversation to end. You must make your position known; tribute or doom.

As the two parties walked to the feast pavilion, the Sheirenese whispered among themselves, "Only fools deal in absolutes."
