The soldiers storm the battlefields as the enemy fires back. The one thing these soldiers have in common is that they are all Canadian. These Canadian men were sent overseas to attack German posts in Europe. It was because of these battles that Canadians were noticed by the rest of the world and gotten a better reputation, which was a big boost when it came to Canada’s separation from England. The WW1 battle that was most significant to Canada was Vimy ridge because it helped Canada become independent, Canadian soldiers became known as efficient, and caused massive national pride. These were the three biggest points that made the battle of Vimy Ridge important to Canadians, and without it, we could still have been attached to the Britain’s.

Canada was not its own country at the time because it was considered to be part of Great Britain. Without the battle of Vimy Ridge, Canada could still have been attached to Great Britain and so it helped Canada become independent. Canada had carefully planned and executed a plan that worked perfectly. The training involved before this battle was extensive. A replica of the battlefield was created to be able to train and familiarize the troops with the attack plan. These very detailed plans and preparations maximized the chances of success. They had done many trench raids to gather intel about the enemy positions. Tunnels would allow troops, supplies and other things to make their way in and out of the trenches. New technology like triangulations allowed Canadians to triangulate the position of enemy fire based of sound of cannons and flashes, which allowed Canadian artillery to destroy the enemy gun positions. This would reduce the struggle that Canadian soldiers faced on the battlefield. This proved to become a flawless victory. Another reason that this battle was so notorious to Canadians was because this was the first battle where all the divisions of Canada had fought together. Canada arrived together and emerged victorious together. This battle was known well to Canadians because it showed the other countries how many sacrifices were made to achieve victory. Canada had a total death count of 11,285.

In the battle of Vimy ridge, Canadian soldiers were very strong and efficient in the battles. The Canadian soldiers were showed to the world as efficient and well-organized. The attack on Vimy Ridge had been extremely successful and even though the soldier’s officers were killed, the infantry would continue forward. Since most of the soldiers had known the battle plan, they did not need their officers to command them, because they could guide themselves through the rest of the plan. The whole strategy was very carefully and properly planned with all of the aspects of the battlefield, enemies, and overall objective taken into consideration. This meant that the Canadian’s knew just as much as the Germans did. This made the soldiers very efficient since they knew everything that they needed to emerge victorious. The continuous shipment of supplies into battle by the carrying parties kept the war machinery flowing. On April 9th, 1917 – the day of the battle – Canadian forces began the invasion of Vimy Ridge. They walked straight into the battle and they did not stop for anyone at all. As many waves of infantry rushed the ridge with the support of the artillery cannons, troops slowly made their way down the field. The men who were walking would not stop for anything or anyone, not even the wounded. This caused them to be more efficient and they were faster at taking the hill. It had only taken them a few days to take the hill, and without the preparations they had, they could have fallen like the French soldiers before them.

After successfully defeating the Germans at Vimy Ridge, there was a great sense of nationalism and pride amongst the citizens back in Canada. The win at Vimy Ridge proved to the world that Canada was a great and strong power capable of doing things that other countries could not. When the news was sent back to Canada, that they had emerged victorious at the battle of Vimy Ridge, the people at the homeland were feeling great pride that they had won, even though the war was long from over. Canada still had to push past the ridge and into France to be able to keep the ridge. Another major cause for national pride was the number of German soldiers that were captured at the ridge. The number of German prisoners of war (POW’s) was far larger than anyone expected. With 4000 German troops captured, Canada’s sense of nationalism skyrocketed because it was a huge catch. One reason that Canada showed their nationalism to other countries was because they were being recognized everywhere. The New York Tribune wrote that Canada had fielded a better army than Napoleons, and they also said that this win for the Canadians was an Easter gift to France. The world was beginning to recognize Canada as a having great fighters, strong and proud citizens, and for being the defeaters of Germans in France in World War One. Arthur Curry has been knighted on the field by King George the fifth and named Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, succeeding British commander Sir Julian Byng. Later, Vimy Ridge was marked as the point for Canada’s national memorial in Europe. Canada after this battle would be known as the ones who reclaimed Vimy Ridge for the allies in the First World War.

Canada had some great victories and terrible defeats, but no battle would have been as well-known as the battle of Vimy Ridge. Canadians have proved their worth and strength in this battle by planning out and recreating their battlefields to be able to outsmart their enemy. They trained their soldiers to be as efficient as possible in the battlefield. Finally they proved that they could be an independent country that has the pride to keep itself going. This is why the WW1 battle that was most significant to Canada was Vimy ridge, because it helped Canada become independent, Canadian soldiers became known as efficient, and caused massive national pride. The Great War will forever be remembered as a time where freedom was a privilege to be fought for and Canada was a huge role in reaching it.

You know, Canada had some of the world's finest horse cavalry in WWI.
By finest do you mean 'least dead', cos charging machine guns with horses is always going to be a Bad IdeaTM.
