So many candidates for justice

By my count, we have 7 candidates for the three available positions. Some of those names are old hands, some of them new ones. Some have had experience in the judiciary, some have not. Overall though there is not a candidate in the field who I automatically think I will not vote for you. Sometimes that happens, but it is not the case this time.

It almost makes me think there should be some form of debate for the election. I'm honestly not sure who to vote for.

Which brings me to this question - Why do so many people want to run for the position of Justice? Don't get me wrong, it is good to see. But as has been acknowledged in many of the election threads it is largely a thankless task, it is unlikely that any court has written a ruling that was universally approved of.

I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts on this too. If you feel comfortable sharing it, who are you voting for and why. If you are running for the position of Justice, tell us why we should vote for you ahead of the other candidates. Tell us why you want to serve as Justice, what do you find appealing about it?

McM, bumping threads without posting violates the rules of war.

I want to run for justice, because I think I can take the heat. You didn't see me give and resign during TNP v. Tomb, though I think other persons who have served as justice would.

I support a relatively strict interpretation of the law, though with some sanity. The rule of law is important, even in this game. Furthermore, I've relatively active, and I think I can manage matters before the court in a timely manner.

At the moment, I believe I'll throw my vote to Vazos, Punk D, and either Flem or Plembobria, whichever impresses me more this campaign period. I didn't really like the R4Rs that the incumbent court made this term, and I'm really choosing the lesser of two evils. I'd vote for some of the upcoming candidates, but I've not seen much experience or motivation to the job of Justice, honestly.

Thank you for your support, Bootsie.

I'm running for Justice because I feel that it's an office where I can best put my strengths to work in service to the region. I make my living analyzing texts and writing about them, and working with the law has been my favorite part of NS since starting the game in 2006.

I also like the relatively apolitical nature of the office. I left the world of gameplay because I got tired of being partisan in every office I held. If elected to be Justice, I get to put my talents to work with the expectation that I be impartial.

I think we should try to get an IRC debate setup between the Justice candidates.

As far as who I'm voting for, as for the moment the only set decision I've made is on flemingovia, and that is simply because he is hilarious.

On a more serious note, while I do find that flem has a tendency to treat any and every position with an air of irreverence, it is usually when the occasion appears to warrant such treatment. I believe that is something we can use. Also flem has been around since before the majority of the laws were written and certainly has much experience with them. He can be counted on to do his job without disappearing.

As for the other two slots, I'm leaning toward Vazos and punk d without any really clear reason at this time.

In my humble opinion, anyone who runs to be a Justice is a lunatic because the position will only garner abuse to the poor fool who occupies one of those positions.

Therefore, I will vote for the candidate whom I believe is most worthy of being abused. I need no debates to make that decision.

Is that why you just declared your candidacy?

Why do I want to run for justice? For the fun.
This is a game. A political game. I am in it because I enjoy the cut and thrust of debate and argument. I enjoy the forensic side of the judiciary.

As Grimalkin has said, my approach is irreverent. In a team of three justices, that is no bad thing. as McM has said, we have seven or more candidates. My criticism of the field is that most of the candidates are so ... bland. So beige. TBH, if you covered up the name at the top of the post, any one of them could have posted any one of the campaign speeches, pretty much.

I see no vision, no ideology, no depth.

Putting me on the bench would, at least, add some texture to the team. And Part of the reasoning behind having three justices was simply that TNP would have some sort of variety of insight.

First of all McM, I definitely appreciate and understand your concern. Each of my fellow candidates deserves to a Justice, and I won't deny them that. Each one of them is unique is so many ways, and each of them would offer a lot in terms of perspective and work to the Court. However ultimately, only three will get elected as you have stated. I’m running because I believe that it is time for me to explore a new area of government. After almost two years of non-stop activity in the Executive Branch, I believe it’s time for me to face new challenges and discover new areas. Serving as a Justice could fulfill that for me, and much more. Also, with my more congested RL schedule and the history of limited activity of the court, serving in this position allows me to serve TNP directly and easily without any conflicts. Also, while many view this position as “thankless,” I do not see it so. It could be that I’ve not experienced it, but I believe that being a Justice and being able to preside over a court of a region such as TNP to be quiet an honor in itself.

For that combination of reasons, I’m running for Justice.

So, in answer to the first question you only have to pick me as your 3rd choice for Justice. Imagine you're creating your list of potential prom dates (for that don't know, prom is an American tradition where adolescent kids go to a dance and have 'lasting' memories of fun, love, and other things not suitable for a PG-rated forum) and you've got a list of about 8-10 candidates.

There's the first choice girl (I'm a hetero male so I was looking for the ladies). She's the one you know everyone is going to pick and she might be a little outta your league but you gotta try. If you don't get her, well then you have your 2nd choice. She's still pretty high up on the list but she's not quite the awww inspiring wunderkind of your first choice.

Punk D is not her either. See, I just need to be the guy who is just like your 3rd choice prom date. The "If I have to, well ok" girl. I am your, "well if I have to, well ok" Judicial candidate. Think of me as the girl you don't really want but you're ok accepting. If you can reconcile yourself to that then, pick me as your candidate and we'll have a great time at prom, I mean during this next judicial term.

That's why you should vote for me ahead all but two candidates. I'm fun, really I am. :)

....As for the second question, I love being a justice. I like fighting for the little guy. I like not caring about politics and attacking a question purely from a legal perspective. I feel no political pressure to come to particular conclusions, I'm not part of any "clique" within TNP, and I value the opinion of all members of TNP to put forth their own legal arguments around a question. I enjoy the banter and critical thinking required to be a Justice.

I have no aspirations of higher office in TNP and it's just a fun role.

Thank you for the questions.
