No sooner had Richard's car stopped and one of the Guards approached to open the door than Abigail Junior had leapt out the car. She burst through the front doors of the Palace, "Where's Great Aunt?" she asked the woman manning the front desk. Before she could answer the teenage girl spotted the Queen's personal secretary walking down the corridor and hurtled off in pursuit before any answer came back.
"Robert, have you seen my Great Aunt?" she bounced to a halt alongside him almost making him drop his folder of papers.
"She was in the Music Room a moment ago with a group of politicians, but..." it was too late the flame haired girl had headed off again taking the steps up the the 2nd floor two at a time. She twisted past two of the Palace maids carrying linen tableclothes, the two smiled as she continued pounding down the long corridor, everyone knew what this meant. As the two maids made their way down to the kitchen they gave the Head of the Royal Kitchen a quick heads up.
Finally Abigail Junior reached the music room, without knocking she flung the two large oak doors open, "Great Aunt" she panted as she spotted the Queen sat with two suited gentlemen, clearly finishing up some talks. One had almost jumped out of his seat as the teenager appeared through the door.
"Hello darling" the Queen stood and walked over to her out of breath Great Niece and kissed her on the forehead, "I assume this is the test?" the Queen took the piece of paper from her hand.
"Yes....I got a A+....second in the class." Abigail Junior was still getting her breath back as the Queen carefully examined the test paper.
"Very well done. That's much better than that C last month" the Queen hugged her much beloved namesake. "Minister Grey" she turned to her guests, "Mister Jacobson, you must forgive me, just we've been working very hard for this test haven't we. I believe our meeting was done, so please forgive my rather quick exit I promise you I'll give it a great deal of thought." She took Abigail Junior by the hand and headed for the door leaving the two members of the government to find their own way out. "So Abbie, who beat you?" the Queen asked intrigued, 87/90 was an excellent score.
"That girl Mary, she's like some kind of super nerd." Abbie replied as they strolled back the way she had come. They found her father at the end of the corridor.
"Good afternoon Aunt" Richard said bowing formally, while his daughter may get away with things he knew he would be expected to be more in check with protocol. "I see you found my rampaging daughter." he ruffled his daughter's flame coloured hair. "She literally had me break every speed limit to get here, she couldn't wait to tell you."
"Well I'm delighted, another physicist in the family is excellent news." The Queen held science dear, especially Physics and to have heard her Grand Niece was not up to scratch had upset her, she wanted all of her family to be well educated, and had spent hours sitting with young Abbie tutoring her. The Queen treated her Grand Niece more like a grand-daughter and everyone knew Abbie could get away with practically anything. "I believe Abbie you should go and tell Jane we're on our way. Will you be joining us Richard?"
"I'd be delighted." As Abbie skipped off towards the Palace kitchen her father offered his arm to his Aunt and the pair strolled through the corridors as a more sedate pace.
A floor down Abbie ran into the kitchen. "Miss Henry" she yelled as she walked into the busy scene of the kitchen staff preparing evening meals for those staff who resided in the Palace. The kitchen manager heard her name and wiping her hands on the ever present towel that hung around her waist.
"Oh hello Miss" she said glancing at the youngster, "Am I to assume you aced that test." she asked with a smile, it was common to have the Queen bring the family down to celebrate important milestones, the test had been highly discussed and the Queen had been visibly nervous that morning.
"Yeah, A+.....can we have three lots of cake and ice cream please." Abbie asked politely.
"We've a lovely double fudge cake and I'll get the ice cream out." They'd prepared the juniors favourite cake just in case. The Queen and her nephew entered and the activity in the kitchen stopped as everyone bowed or curtsied, the Queen thanked them for the respect before taking a seat on the bench on the chef's table, the sweet treats placed before them. The family spent the afternoon scoffing Abbie's reward and sharing quality time.
"Great Aunt" Abbie said as she licked her spoon clean after a second helping, "Do you think you can help me beat the super nerd?" she asked.
"Abbie, you shouldn't call people things like that." her father scolded.
"Oh Richard, nothing wrong with some competitive spirit. Of course we'll beat her next time Abbie, bring your books tomorrow and we'll get things started."
"But Aunt, you have that meeting with the Ministry of Health tomorrow." Her nephew reminded her.
"I'll cut it short, nothing is more important than family, and nothing matters more than them getting a good education when their young."
