News from the Democratic Union
The Democratic Union has been bustling with activity in recent weeks. In mid November, the Democratic Union met to discuss the political crisis in McMasterdonia, where elections have not been held as promised and the allegations that the Monarchy was suppressing press freedoms in the name of Security. This debate caused some controversy with the McMasterdonian Ambassador accusing the Chairman of attempting to deflect attention from the internal problems that had been plaguing Malvad in recent years. While Malvad strongly denied those accusations, they did recall and replace their Ambassador to the DU and stated that they still believed an investigation should be carried out in McMasterdonia to ascertain the truth about the allegations. That investigation did not come to fruition, with McMasterdonia promising to hold elections by the 25th of January.
The Democratic Union has passed multiple resolutions to the benefit of their member states - including a Free Trade agreement, an amendment that requires the Council to vote on the admission of members, and a collective defence agreement. In addition to the aforementioned resolutions, the DU has discussed the formation of committees to improve the efficiency of the DU's response to specialized areas.
In recent elections, the Chairmanship passed from Malvad to Scandigrad, after Scandigrad defeated Malvad in hotly contested elections. McMasterdonia was elected Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Union fighting against Dalies to win the position.
The Democratic Union has been discussing the regulation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and how best to regulate and deal with these in member states. Recently the Cronaal Civil War has become a contentious issue, with Syrixia invading the nation with a 5000 strong peacekeeper force, without proper consultation of either the Democratic Union or the legitimate Government of Cronaal. This decision drew criticism from the Ambassadors from McMasterdonia, Olvern and Scandigrad, which led to an embarrassing withdrawal and back down by the Government of Syrixia.
The Democratic Union continues to provide an interesting forum for nations to collaborate on issues of importance to them. It has quickly become a vital institution in the North Pacific and it will be interesting to see if another such body will form to rival the Democratic Union's monopoly on international power in the region.
