A big day in counterterrorism in Australia today. Over 800 police officers were involved in raids all over Sydney and arrested 15 people in connection with various terror plots.

There were plans to kidnap a random member of the public, publicly behead them and then drape their body with the ISIS flag. This would have been absolutely shocking and it reminds me of the attack on the UK soldier earlier this year (possibly late last year). The Australian Government flagged changes to the Anti-terrorism laws a few months ago.

Polarising Senator Cory Bernardi has been campaigning for some time to ban the burqa and has taken part in various interviews that have been labelled as racist and at risk of inciting anti-muslim violence and intolerance. The Senator commented on the fact that some people living in the raided houses were wearing the burqa, Prime Minister Abbott distanced himself from the comments and warned people against blaming the wider muslim community for the isolated incident and the small pockets of Australia involved in terrorist activities.

The Australian Government has recently been supporting the military and aid efforts against ISIS and has announced that they will step up this commitment after the statement made by Barack Obama earlier this week. It is clear that this terrorist attack had been planned well in advance and before the announcement by the Government was made.

There are concerned that this could result in a significant growth in anti-muslim sentiment, which could result in the repeat of the Cronulla Riots. Radio shock-jocks and controversial media figures have been put on notice.

I think if you look at it overall, we're moving towards good change. People are starting to combat extremism, and while yes there is bloodshed, its pretty unavoidable when it comes to this topic. I think the more we fight it, while of course being careful not to insult the greater community, as well as aiding those innocents and caught in the "giant shitstorm" as I like to put it, in the Middle East, it'll be a long, but worthwhile fight.

Wow what a long sentence.
