The second question of the debate is from me.

What do you think of the suggestion that TNP should close it's foreign relations with TRR as Unibot was elected Delegate? Would you support this policy if elected Delegate? Why/Why not?

The same rules apply for this thread. Only candidates for Delegate may answer this question and post here. Comments by other individuals will be removed. Candidates are encouraged to answer the questions before responding to the comments of others.

I think that under my delegacy relations with TRR may experience a renaissance of sorts due to the amount of recruiting I will be doing for them. That having been said when agents of TRR/UDL arrive on these forums to attempt to subvert TNP's democracy we will certainly have to declare war upon them, and I will probably make an attempt to boot enough WA's to get one of our own into the delegacy.

I would not rush to immediately close relationships with TRR. TNP and TRR have had neighborly relations during Frattastan's delegacy. The new TRR Government has been in place for less than a week. As they are still deciding the future direction of their diplomacy, there is some probability that they will choose to uphold their predecessor's policy.

Delegate Unibot has, on several occasions in the recent past and prior to ascending to his new office, been very critical of our diplomatic and military endeavors. Sometimes he has been outright offensive to TNP. Given this context, I would need to see some signs of good faith to be convinced of his commitment to continued relations between our two regions. Sadly, what we have received so far is hardly encouraging. The ball is in his court.

I wouldn't close relations with TRR unless they did something particularly heinous that directly impacted TNP or its interests.

However, after reading the May 04, 2014 installation of The Rejected Realm Times, I would let them make the first move, diplomatically. The easiest way to handle TRR and its new government in term of our relations with TRR, is to approach this with a somewhat Realpolitik coloration - we maintain friendly relations with them, and if they cut off relations with TNP, then it's their 'bad', not ours.

As far as diplomatic dealings with TRR and a government that for all intents and purposes is taking a blustery and belligerent stance with TNP, I would say let them bluster. Unibot is obviously miffed at the R/D neutrality of TNP (just call me Captain Obvious for that statement) but he will get over it. Judging from the content of this little publication (TRR Times), we are all living rent-free in his head, and that's fine. TRR has the government and leader it has chosen. It has been said that people get the government they deserve and that is their choice. If the new found belligerence caused them (not us) to change their relationship with TNP, then that is their loss, not ours.

Frankly, I am not particularly upset by anything Unibot says nor surprised at all.

But back to the crux of the questions.

Cutting off relations with TRR because Unibot ascended to the Delegacy there would not be a good PR move on our part. Such a response from TNP is probably what Unibot is expecting and attempting to elicit. If we cut off relations with TRR for Unibot simply being Delegate there, then we will be made to look reactionary and non-centrist in our foreign policy, and then fall right into the mold Unibot is attempting to cast us in. Now, if TRR cuts off relations with TNP, it makes them, and Unibot look so far off center that their whole region will look like it is falling off the left side of NationStates. Dealing with instances such as this is easy, if TRR and Unibot are going to act rational. If they aren't being rational, then there is no point in dealing with them, at least on their terms. We simply let them act one way or the other and be careful of the image we project by our response or lack of response. In simple terms, we should not be moved to act by anyone's bluster or personal gripes unless forced to do so. If TRR cuts off relations with us, then we simply take the high road and express sincere regrets at such developments and then support whatever diplomatic treatment necessary to deal with them should they terminate relations.

Since this is a debate I will respond to my opponent's claims.

We should hit them while they're weak. When picking out which zebra to cull from the herd you should always pick the one which seems most feeble, diseased, and weak. Since I'm already taking care of TNP here that leaves TRR as a close runner-up.

Sorry, no, I wouldn't support closing relations with TRR simply because Unibot is delegate. Contrary to what Unibot seems think, we don't all hate his guts. When he was in TNP politics it was an incredibly interesting time and players like him make NationStates a game worth playing.

Roman has really hit the nail on the head here. TNP is not going to benefit by lashing out at Unibot. If TRR wants to close relations with us, then they can do so but I would not be taking any such preemptive action.

Why? As I said, there's no benefit to TNP in doing so.
