Chasmanthe Elects New Government
Crowds fill the streets of Nikhaylovsk this evening, many are returning from Christmas shopping, but of all winter nights there was another reason for them to be out. For the first time in living memory, the voters had chosen a new government. The New Year Party of Chasmanthe had crept up in the polls and won a landslide, much to the surprise of the incumbent government, who had given the election very little attention. The people are jubilant now.

Satrap Lossoth McDonnell announced his retirement from politics earlier today, and is widely expected to emigrate to The South Pacific. The Post has been informed that Lossoth has been invited by at least two corporations in Sparaxis to consult with them on the international arms trade. That rumour was met with subdued disappointment by the Chasmese public: "His defense policies have done nothing for Chasmanthe, nothing at all!" was the complaint by singer Bebo Birdee to host Kim Lett, on last night's talk show Lett Live.

The leader of the NYP, and winner of this election, is a gentleman named John Joseph Kerr. I squeezed into the bustling Frege Square to listen to his speech, delivered next to the Victory statue. Kerr has a shouty voice and curly long blond hair. He said he won't seek a repeal of the IRC resolution and cannot forsee changing that stance. Kerr advocates strict limits on the liberties that the Shahanshah takes with personally representing our nation in The North Pacific, and intends to replace autocratic control of foreign affairs with democratic instruments, specifically by setting up a New Year Party of The North Pacific to co-operate with fellow nations via democratic process. It's certainly a radical idea and flies in the face of the conventional wisdom of leaving international affairs to Niadh.

NYP activists commented that it's taken a long time to get to this point and are relieved to gain a majority in the Chasmese Assembly, which had been experiencing a severe backlog of legislation due to the morose and distracted sovereign. "I'm glad the speech didn't go on too long." a campaigner told me, as the evening descended into a mishmash of moshing to loud music and drinking mulled wine.

Grosseschnauzer Trial Continues
Chasmanthe witnessed the Grosseschanuzer Fraud Trial enter what appears to be its final stages today. It began in November 2012. The Democratic Federation of Grosseschnauzer is accused of Fraud with regards to comments made in the Regional Assembly of TNP, to the former Speaker Kingborough II. The Eluvataran defense delivered its closing arguments in 4,957 words this afternoon. The Post won't comment on this ongoing trial further, for risk of being sued. We look to the West and expect a verdict to arise from Novare Res in the fullness of time.

TNP General Election Looms
The North Pacific enters a General Election on 1st January, which is Remembrance Day. Delegate McMasterdonia called for volunteers to serve as Election Commissioner. The Post understands that Chasmanthe is eligible to send a representative to fill the EC position, but the Post also understands that NYP policy is against interregional politics unless coordinated by the NYP. It's not clear if this will prevent Niadh from running or nominating other nations for the positions of Delegate, Vice Delegate, and Speaker.

McMasterdonia, with no less than 475 endorsements, is widely expected to run for re-election. Niadh traditionally nominates a nation that already has SC membership, due to the "Grounded WA" theory. The theory states that given two candidates that are both capable of deploying with the NPA, nominating the non-SC member will ground both to TNP, whereas nominating the SC member grounds only one to TNP leaving the other one available for NPA commitments.

Democatic Donkeys (383 endorsements) has launched an exploratory commission for his potential run on the Vice-Delegacy. DD has tremendous support so far. SillyString and Guslantis comprise the Election Commission, and are therefore cannot run for Speaker. Mr. "Long Name" of Zyvetskistaahn is serving his second month as Speaker. I expect we could see the first uncontested Speaker election in TNP, that would set a new Tradition.

Pyrotechnic Accident in Former Capital
In the early hours of this morning, there was an explosion in Chasmanthe City. Fortunately the city centre has long since been deserted, it has been steadily depopulated since the capital was moved to Nikhaylovsk in response to the repeated flooding of the river Manduin. The swamped lost city remained a popular tourist destination in the summer months, and so it was lucky they weren't around when the Aelto Tower blew up.

From what we can gather, the building was occupied by a meeting of the NYP. According to activist Yc Ondu, the NYP was planning an event for the end of the year, including a massive volume of fireworks. Ondu told us that the fireworks had been stockpiled in the Aelto Tower, and detonated by accident.

Eyewitnesses in the outskirts of the town said the explosion was "Awesome", and they didn't realise that people had been inside, including the head of government most of the cabinet, "These things happen, but it's sad."

Acting NYP leader Tid Ondu says the party is bankrupt and will disband once the remaining members return from their Christmas break.

Big Cat Discovered
Foreign backpackers in the Thurban jungle claim to have seen a tiger. The zoological society have demanded pictures, or it never happened. The animal is described as very cute, cat-like, 3 feet long, with black and brown stripes.

IRC resolution up for repeal
The rump assembly of Chasmanthe looks set to repeal its 100-day old prohibition on the use of IRC. NYP opposition will be minimal as most of their assembly members were wiped out in the pyrotechnic accident. Speaker Jypvor and Deputy Speaker Gnotr, both are NYP members and were among the deceased. The surviving deputy, Mr. Tusikov of the Progressive Traditionalist party will be administering the vote. The Radical Pragmatists are in favour of the repeal whereas the Liberal Conservatives are staunchly opposed.

The members we spoke to in the lobby were mostly keen to see the prohibition lifted. "There are a number of influential nations in The North Pacific that we could only talk to if we were on IRC. The ban is holding us back from developing Chasmanthe's relationship with our international comrades." said one. Another countered: "Our standing with other nations would be improved by our actions, not idle chatter. The reason we are met with overall less hostility today is because it's been a long time since they heard anything stupid out of Chasmanthe. Keeping the IRC ban shields us from diplomatic damage."

The vote could still go either way, as there are a large number of independent assembly members, and they were unavailable for comment. Tusikov announced that due to TNP observation of Remembrance Day, the standard 2.5 day vote will last for 3.5 days. Tusikov, who celebrates his 94th birthday in february, asked the assembly to make a list of nations that are no longer with us. The repeal vote began on Monday and closes on Thursday.

Vote passes under mysterious circumstances
The Chasmese assembly voted by 18-14 in favour of a resolution to repeal the IRC ban. There were also 11 absentions. Liberal Conservative member Ric Toyo said there were "masses of independent members switching sides like they couldn't make up their minds." Clearly it's a vote that inspired a lot of indecision. Acting Speaker Tusikov sadly died on Wednesday due to a heart attack. The vote was announced this morning by the speaker pro tempore, Mun Poign, who belongs to the Radical Pragmatists.

We at the Post are relieved at this outcome as we will at least be granted some degree of press access to the world fair events in The South Pacific, which opens tomorrow.
