The results for the Special election for justice are as follows:

Mall: 8
Jamie: 5
Tim: 6
Gracius Maximus: 8
Flemingovia: 4
Abstain: 2

A run off vote will be held between Mall and Gracius Maximus for the position of justice. Voting will last five days and will begin immediately in another thread.

This seems to be quite a remarkable outcome. Given a total of 31 non-abstentions, barely half of the voters voted for one of the top two candidates. Nevertheless, only those two were considered in the runoff.

If the election were run by the "Instant Runoff Vote," or by a Condorcet voting system, the outcome may have been different, and may have been preferred by most voters to the outcome under the current system.

Thoughts?

I tend to disagree, as the runoff candidates at quite different platforms to each other. Whereas Tim endorsed Mall's campaign and Flemingovia's platform was in some respects (forgive me for saying) similar to Mall's. So Mall not only gained a (joint) plurality of the first preference votes, but would likely have gained a majority of second preference votes. If that indeed be the case then it would have produced the same result as the runoff procedure.

It could have produced a different result, but only under extreme conditions, such as none of the other candidates's voters choosing GM or Mall as their second and third preferences.

Although I'm not intimately familiar with the condorcet procedure so I could have it all wrong here.

I think IRV is a great idea. It could be argued that implementing a system like that will actually increase voter turnout during elections, as each voter could perceive their vote as being more meaningful than under the current system. The only downside I can see is TNP will be deprived of a chance to vote in yet another election. :P
