United Kingdom Policy: In Brief

  • In the wake of a recent foiled forum attack, United Kingdom has become one of the newest signatories of the Convention on Off-Site Property Security (COPS). Following passage of the treaty, HM Government will be pushing for a law enforcing the provisions of the convention and giving United Kingdom the power to prosecute citizens for acts of terrorism committed abroad.
  • In one of the most dramatic changes in UK election law in years, Parliament has passed a constitutional amendment changing parliamentary elections to first-past-the-post if no candidate wins an outright majority in the first round of voting. Legislative leaders expressed hope that this change would lead to the resolution of elections more quickly. The amendment will go before the citizens for a vote of ratification at the end of August.
  • Parliament has recently passed, and HM Government has begun to enforce, a sweeping new legal regime for approving citizenship applications. After repeated attempts by convicted regional criminals to breach United Kingdom's current security measures and gain unauthorized access to forum, HM Government will now be authorized to impose greater scrutiny on certain applications that raise "red flags" of potential threats.

United Kingdom Law: In Brief

  • Chief Justice Constance St.James's resignation became official effective on 1 August 2013. The following day Parliament voted to confirm her replacement, Jacob M. Stewart, and a new member of the Court, Edwin T. C. Astor.
  • In a politically-charged case, the Supreme Court recently ruled 2-1 that Speaker of Parliament Klaus Mikaelson committed the crime of spamming when he disrupted a government-sponsored cultural event. Mikaelson was sentenced to a three-day forum ban for the crime. HM Government was criticized by some for allegedly prosecuting the Speaker based on personal animus. Meanwhile, some in Parliament used the conviction as grounds to call for the Speaker's removal from his office. Removal proceedings never materialized in the chamber, though.

United Kingdom Society: In Brief

  • United Kingdom's newest hot social group is the Club of Scotland. Founded by Victoria, the Dowager Queen, the Club of Scotland invites the region's biggest names to socialize and to discuss issues of pressing regional policy, serving as a think tank for tackling the region's biggest problems. The Club's opening gala was recently held at the Dowager Queen's estate.

State Visit from the New Galactic Empire

King Edward IX escorting the Emperor and Empress of the New Galactic Empire to Buckingham Palace.

King Edward IX recently received the Emperor and Empress of the New Galactic Empire at Buckingham Palace as part of an official state visit. Prominent names from across the region were invited to attend an event held in honour of the esteemed guests.

United Kingdom and the New Galactic Empire have a long history of friendship, going back to the earliest days of UK's existence. Indeed, one of the first formal treaties that United Kingdom ever ratified was the Treaty of London with the New Galactic Empire. Elizabeth III, a former long-serving Queen of United Kingdom, is the current Empress of the New Galactic Empire, giving the two regions an even greater bond.
