WTF is it? --------- #1

Romanoffia

Garde à l'eau!
I thought this would be fun, considering that I am not only weird, but I have a vast collection of weird and odd things hanging around my house.

So, I thought it would be fun to post some pictures of various artifacts that I suspect very few people would know what they are. I figure that with all the people on the forum, someone else other than just me would know what this particular object is.

So, WTF is it? :o

Clue: Without this part the whole machine is useless; you probably have a modern version of the device that this object is part of.

Is it a gramophone arm?

I have to say I also have some oddities lying around the house. As an eBay Trading Assistant, I get some pretty crazy stuff that we spend hours trying to figure out - wft is it?

Bingo! You got it!

It's from an Edison Diamond Disc phonograph!

And Great Bight's Mum is the first winner of the "WTF is it?!" Contest!

It's not a jewelry box. This pic doesn't show the inside, which would be lined if it were meant for jewelry. Each of those small boxes comes off the top tray, and then you can open the larger box. I have more pics if you like.

No, but those are all guesses we had when we first came across it. Objects used for the same purpose are found in India, throughout southeast Asia, and Indonesia. This one is possibly from either Nepal, Thailand or the Philippines.

No, neither answer is correct.

The box is perhaps 200 years old. I understand that In modern times, there has been a decrease in the popularity of what it was used for.

No, but close. This is something that would have been offered to a guest, like coffee or a peace pipe... I never heard of it before running across the box. and.... I'm running out of clues.

Well, out of curiosity I searched in google for 20 minutes. The only similar thing I found is something called "betel nut kit box", a box containing little boxes with the ingredients and items used to eat some exotic nut called "betel nut" (first time I hear about) that also stains your teeth as if it were blood.

YAY!! I won! It was a hard one!

I think I have something worthy for the thread, but I don't know where I placed it... If I find that or some other thing wtf'ish, I'll post it. But I have nothing right now :(
