Haha, you're right. One of my ambitions this summer is to educate myself on some Meteorology 101. Any suggestions for textbooks or the like?

The sad part is that I've never taken an academic class in meteorology
I've learned most of what I know from online weather communities. Textbooks focus heavily on math... stuff like the vorticity equation etc. What interests me personally is practical weather forecasting which most university meteorology departments surprisingly suck at.

Well! There's alway's Kocin's Northeast Snowstorms book, which does a fantastic job at explaining the meteorology behind winter storms... but that's all it's good for.
