So, for those who have Jabber working already (probably just me ) it's tnp@conference.jabber.org
For those who don't...
Jabber
What is Jabber?
Jabber is an open protocol for Instant Messanging, supported by a variety of things and clients.
Do I need to register something?
Well, in theory if you have a GMail account you already have a JID (Jabber ID) that you can use, i.e. [redacted] but it's so easy to register an @jabber.org JID that you may as well for anonymity's sake.
What's the difference between this and IRC?
Firstly, Jabber's a very expansive protocol, built primarily for one on one chat-- it has a mod MUC (Multi User Chat) attached to it. The big difference is that, like with AIM or MSN, you keep your IP secret and safe.
Additionally, Jabber MUC automatically has server logs of discussions, so if you miss a bit it'll show you what you missed. And you can be connected from multiple places if you like.
Unfortunately, Jabber's a touch harder to get connected to than IRC.
OK, I'm ready, how do I get on?
Okay, there's a few simple steps to the process:
1. Select a Jabber client.
Go to http://www.jabber.org/software/clients.shtml and chose which client suits you. If you're a standard run of the mill windows user, I'd (probably?) recommend Psi.
2. Configure a JID in the client.
This depends on the client, but generally you will when starting immediately get a screen which asks you to set up a JID. Either set up you existing JID from GMail (enter the JID as your email address) or make a new one I.E. dalimbar@jabber.org
Feel free to ask for help if something goes wrong at this stage.
3. Go to the room: Simply select Join Multi-User Chat or something of the like, which should be fairly accessible in the menus of the client, and then set the host conference.taijitu.org and the channel tnp and go. That or post here and ask for an invite to the room if you have trouble finding it.
