The foreign affairs agenda

Foreign policy is a difficult thing to campaign on; due to the glitch in my crystal ball I cannot see what events will happen, either here in TNP or anywhere else in the world during this term. However there are a few solid things which can be said for our overall aims in foreign policy and how I believe we should deal with any crises that come up.

Our foreign policy is always driven by the best interests of TNP as a region. Without any real economic sphere international relations in NationStates are defined even more so by the semi-military aspect of invasions and defending. As a feeder we are more insulated from the threat of attack, and the chances of a successful invasion are relatively slim. Ultimately we need to act as we are, a large and potentially powerful region, a world leader.

We need to take every opportunity we see to advance TNP as a world power, take a leading role in any major issues or incidents which may happen. That doesn't necessarily mean taking sides, whether we act as mediators between others, or resolve disputes with other regions the most important thing is that we publicise it, and inform the world. Information is the key, and co-operation between the MoC and the MoEA and even the MoD is important to making sure that whatever we do, everyone knows we did it.

The Diplomatic Corp

The Diplomatic Corp is a large part of the 'delivery system' of our foreign policy. Whatever our foreign policy may be it requires the DC to drive it forward, keeping other regions informed, as I said above, a foreign policy that no one else knows is not much of a policy.

The DC has fallen into inactivity lately, a trend which needs reversing. Reviving the Diplomatic Corp is something which needs to be top priority. I think that fortnightly updates are the best option to implement, weekly updates tend to be missed as there isn't always enough to fill an update every single week. Also I would like to see diplomats producing monthly updates of events happening in other regions, keeping us update to date on events and foreign affairs across the globe.

I would like to see the organisational guidelines of the DC be put into law, giving the Ambassador-General a real role with legally defined powers. This will be useful in the long term, ensuring a degree of stability to the DC and which, hopefully, we ensure the DC remains as active as it needs to be to advance TNP in the world beyond this term.

And that’s about it, if you have any questions about my platform or TNP and foreign affairs then please ask.

Haor Chall,

What are your views regarding Military Pacts? Do you wish to pursue and produce such with a cretain region/s?

Assuming that there be a military conflict between TNP and one of her friends, what would you do? Will you act on behalf of the Defense Ministry as a defender, or will you stay neutral?

Will the Ministry of External Affairs produce it's own reports, or do you want a hand from the MoC regarding this? Furthermore, I understand what kind of cooperation you want, but will you take the opportunity to work hand in hand with the MoC to publish propaganda?

That said, I'm glad to see you running again, you did a wonderful job in your last term. :)

What work would you like to see done between the MoD and the MoEA and the MoC and the MoEA?

Well, the idea is that articles produced by the MoC can be posted in our embassies abroad, information from the DC can be used in the Wire perhaps and that sort of thing. As for the MoD, I unfortunately never got around to it last term but I think at the moment only people who can see the NPA forum know what the NPA is doing, which perhaps gives the impression that it doesn't do very much- hence the talk before about removing the NPA- from the MoD perspective news about the NPA and its achievements in the Wire would show people that we have an active military arm (perhaps helping with recruitment) and from my perspective it would good to have that sort of information to post in our embassy reports- so the rest of the world knows how good the NPA is. I hope that answers your question for you.

Military pacts are fine in theory but for us as a feeder they're not so good. I think a better policy, especially as the NPA is a defender organisation, is that if a friendly region were to need military help than we would likely enough help them or in certain cases we might make guarantees or pledges but an obligatory 'pact' isn't really in our interests. It might sound a little like some kind of unilateralism, and I guess perhaps it is, but I think our position as a feeder makes "mutual" defense pacts not very mutual and as such any such agreements should always be on our terms.

Assuming that there be a military conflict between TNP and one of her friends, what would you do? Will you act on behalf of the Defense Ministry as a defender, or will you stay neutral?

Well, if TNP were to be involved in a military conflict then that is TNP, which is all of her government, not just the MoD. As an official of our government, I could hardly claim to be neutral in any conflict between us and another region. That is not to say, however, that I would not seek to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict as I would do my best to do so, as I think that is what the job of the MoEA is.

Will the Ministry of External Affairs produce it's own reports, or do you want a hand from the MoC regarding this? Furthermore, I understand what kind of cooperation you want, but will you take the opportunity to work hand in hand with the MoC to publish propaganda?

I think the best option would be for the MoEA to produce the embassy updates “in-house” but supplement those with articles, etc from the MoC as and when they are produced. What exactly do you mean about publishing propaganda? If you mean like posting things like the war posters in our embassies, I’d be a little cautious about that, depending on how you do it.

That said, I'm glad to see you running again, you did a wonderful job in your last term. J

Thank you! I hope that answers your questions satisfactorily.

What outside region/group most interests you right now to the point that you'd like to pursue or expand diplomatic relations with them?

Well, the DC has been somewhat inactive for a while so I think the first thing to do is re-establish our links with the regions we already have embassies and consulates with. In particular I believe we should look at sorting out our relations with the other feeders, and after that some of the larger regions out there that we don't already have embassies with. Aside from that there isn't anywhere or anyone who I'd really want to persue diplomatic relations with.

What are your views on the role of the MoEA in a time of declared war, outside of receiving messages of support and closing embassies as needed?

Well, as well as receiving messages of support we need to go out there and find support; push people for more than just messages (should we need/want military support for any operations or anything else). Also we would need to counter any misinformation/propaganda being spread by those we are war with, letting other regions know our version of things over theirs.

I think also one of the most important things, as MoEA, is to try to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis- not to sell TNP out, no peace at any cost- but do my best to find a workable diplomatic solution, should one exist. Again, that may involve more than just us and whoever we're at war with, it may be necessary for us to speak through intermeditaries or agree to a neutral ground for talks and things like that.

I also believe that it is important we don't forget the basics in times of war. All the normal duties still need to be fulfilled, the DC still needs to run and normal updates should still be produced. Of course, this shows other regions that the war hasn't closed us down and that we're still around, which is important to the previous points as well.

I hope that answers your question.
