I have come across a pair of very large framed mirrors inscribed "Wimbledon Ale, est. 1877"

Has anyone ever heard of Wimbledon Ale? Can you tell me anything about it?

I think it's made-up. A promotional thing for the tennis match. It seems like an uncanny coincidence that it would be established the same year as the very first Lawn Tennis Championships at The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, which was an amateur event in 1877.

BTW, my RL job entails researching items of antiquity and ferreting out fakes, forgeries and reproductions.

What kind of degree do you need for that?

The degree doesn't matter. Some of the American decorative arts studies I had as an undergraduate helped, but the main thing is experience. The best thing about my job is that I learn something new every day.
