Fighting the war on AdSpam

I know this tends to disappear from the collective consciousness every now and again, so I thought I'd remind everyone.

A couple of points, the whole 15 line limit generally isn't working. The recruiters that stick to it, generally did anyway. And the ones that don't, know we can't do anything about it.

Over the past couple of days I've tried to maintain as constant a presence on there as possible, and it does make a difference. I've seen more new players introducing themselves and asking questions on there than I would normally expect in a week. How many will translate into forum goers I don't.

I've noticed the 24 hour rule is breached quite alot as well. Usually I suspect it accidental, however there are several regions that I would class as repeat offenders. In particular the Supreme Union's eagle ad appears too much for my liking. I'm keeping a note of when ads are placed.

Finally, I don't know if any of you know about UCAST, who appear to be some kind of anti-spam organisation, who offer to send TG's for regions in exchange for a cut in AdSpamming. Whether it'll work or not, I don't know. I only mention it because one of their posts stated that when asked about The North Pacific, most recruiters said we sent 'rude TGs about ad lengths' and (this is my favourite) 'devilish and sacrastic to them on the RMB'. Keep it up people.

edit - And apologies to the MoC for toe stepping. :P

For everyones reference:

The Recruiter of UGE post two adverts for the New Galactic Empire (NGE) within a 24 hour period, both of which appeared on the RMB (briefly ) at the same time. (First at roughly 14:20 today, second at roughly 16:30).

I've sent a TG informing of the rules regarding AdSpam, and asking for them to stop.

I assume we're working on a 1 warning and then we pass it on to the mods basis...

Nam... if you actually see them at the same time, REPORT IT.

That's the easy case. The damn eagle guy is harder, he waits until after the other ad is gone.

:npa1:

Understood.

Can the mods actually check on ads that have disappeared off the RMB?
no. Which is why when you catch them with 2/10, You should report it as fast as possible.

However, if you want to try to catch the Eagle guy and you have the time one day, you could send in a getting help request and state that you're sure he'll be on again and you're submitting it for a record. But that should only be done if a) it's a repeat guy and b) you know you'll be there.

no problem, Namyeknom :)

Thanks for bringing this up again. It is a really important issue in TNP that is frequently overlooked. I'd like to see candidates come up with more ideas and present their opinions during elections.

If they post more than once in 24hours, report them and notify us here. I think that should result in a ban-on-sight if they try to come back to the region.

The SDLP Constitutional Monarchy of Sapprazzo:
What they don't tell you is that if you dont' join they will use threatening tactics, telling you they will bump your recruitment messages off of RMBs if you don't join as they have with our recruiter

My reply:

What? Threatening? I think not.

Last time I checked we had the right to use OUR Regional Message Board. Especially now, with election time it is important for us to contact as many nations as possible. If recruiters are not willing to use telegram messages (which although more work, are far more effective), then it should not be expected for recruitment messages that are casually placed amid our conversations to be lost quickly.

I also do not like the inference that any of us threaten residents of The North Pacific. I certainly would not threaten recruiters to join, as quite frankly, I have no need to.

TNP - Friendly and huggable.

God, I love it.

The Republic of Ampa

Reported for multiple AdSpam, three adverts one after the other.

If people could refrain from posting on the RMB until the mods have dealt with it, it would be great.

edit - They are still in The North Pacific if the delegate wants some target practice...

The spam is reprehensible indeed, but unless you can catch them in clear violation of game rules, it's TSOL, and that is unfortunate.

The root of the whole problem is a general reluctance of TNP natives to post on the RMB. If we want to render recruiter spam ineffective, there is a very simple solution: we take back the board for our own use.

It's simple to do. If everyone here would make at least one RMP post every day to shove the spam off the board that would be a start. In fact, post ever time your first post gets shoved off the board, but make sure that it is a relevent post not relating to spam. If recruiters cannot behave according to civilized rules by limiting the length of their ads, then there is no choice for us but to make their ads ineffective by shoving them off the RMB.

We also have to put an end to the whole spam war issue because their are certain unseemly persons who seek to aggrevate the situation in order to promote chaos and conflict in a manner perfectly timed for political advantage during elections.

Hear, hear.

Personally, I think this weekend has been quite a successful time on the RMB. We've maintained a respectable presence there. At several times I have seen known recruiters arrive and disappear without posting while a full blown conversation is underway. And while I agree it would be nice to discuss something relavent to the region on the RMB, at the moment I'm happy settling with providing a point of human contact on the RMB, no matter how irrelavent.

Whether it netting us any long term members, I don't know.

I'm not sure what your alluding to here. I hope it is not thought I, or indeed anyone who is posting on the RMB, is doing it to propagate chaos. My sole aims in highlighting this were in order to confront the problem we have with recruiting new nations to The North Pacific. Indeed, I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to manipulate the RMB in a way that would confere an advantage to anyone during an election.

And on the reporting front, the ads are still up there, although no Mod action has been apparent so far... 1 hours and counting...

Nam... just in case you hadn't, I reported them via the Getting Help Page. As long as you attach the RMB, they'll take action regardless of how long or even if the ads are still there.

Just make sure to attach the RMB of The North Pacific and say who's spamming. Then you can bump it off all you want, the legal record will still exist.

OK, I'm totally confused now.

So does the whole, Attach Region box, and the RMB tick box form a sort of screen shot for the mods to use?

I have begun logging spam in TNP and found that The Most Serene Republic of The Magic Folk has placed ads for Amor Fati Anagenesis twice in a 24 hour period.. Both messages didn't appear at the same time so i couldn't report it to the mods

Well, I'm here to report a kick in the nuts:
NationStates Moderators:
In case anyone else gets the idea of travelling from feeder to feeder clearing adspam, don't. We sometimes tolerate 'conversations' that have no apparent purpose but to push adspam off the boards, but a deliberate campaign is not acceptable. Those involved have been warned.

Part of the price of living in a game-created region is tolerating adspam. Deal with it.
One question: Why the hell should we?
