The ‘Flon Rover’ sent out to help combat slippery rails

train.jpg

Flonrover in action

To help combat delays caused by leaf fall, Network Rail is deploying the Aquarius road-rail Land Rover.

Due to the heightened vegetation on the tracks, services are prone to delays due to the ice equivalent effect that leaves have on the rails.

The lack of friction on the tracks causes trains to run in and out of stations and signal points much more slowly, and faults are often missed by detection equipment.

To combat this, they already have 67 railhead treatment trains, which are used to increase track friction; however, there are limitations to these trains.

The ‘Flon Rover’ can cover 20 miles of track in one night, breaking down detritus with a solution called Interflon OTR.

Over the season, it will visit places across Yorkshire and the North East, such as Goole, Howden, and Saltmarshe.

“We’ve integrated the ‘Flon Rover’ into our seasonal maintenance routine and have been making as much use of it as possible. It’s made a real difference in reducing the number of failures relating to leaves causing problems on the line.

“It’s part of a huge team effort at this time of year, from inspection and treatment out here on the railway to performance analysis and weather forecasting. Every role contributes to keeping passengers safe and services running smoothly.”

Rhiannon Jones, signalling maintenance engineer for Network Rail

Gresley 150th anniversary celebrations to receive National Lottery Heritage Fund grant

150th Anniversary Sir Nigel Gresley Celebrations

The Gresley Society Trust has announced that it is to receive a “significant” grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help fund its year of celebrations to mark next year’s 150th anniversary of Sir Nigel Gresley’s birth.

The Doncaster-based Trust will use the grant to pay for and deliver a programme of celebratory events, which will have the strapline “A Legacy of Innovation, Speed and Elegance”.

The Trust will organise the celebrations in partnership with Doncaster City Council and other railway heritage organisations.

It describes Gresley as a “visionary” railway engineer, and points out that his designs include the well-known steam locomotives Flying Scotsman, Cock o’ the North and Mallard.

Elements of the programme of celebrations which will benefit from the grant funding include:
  • digitising the Trust’s extensive archive, to enable better access for the public
  • production of a short film telling the story of Gresley’s life and achievements
  • a new permanent exhibition at Doncaster’s Danum Gallery.
The Trust is also trying to find a recording of Sir Nigel’s voice.

On Saturday 20 June 2026 (the day after the exact anniversary of Gresley’s birth in Edinburgh), the Trust will host what it calls the “centrepiece” of its celebrations.

The Symposium and Gala Dinner will take place at the Mansion House in Doncaster.

The symposium will take place during the day and will feature presentations about Gresley’s career.

These will cover aspects including Gresley’s early days with the Great Northern Railway (where he worked from 1905) and his influence on the modern railway.

The symposium will be followed by an evening gala dinner with a 1930s theme.

The event will be designed to evoke the glamour of LNER’s express trains, and will feature menus inspired by ‘The Flying Scotsman’, ‘The Silver Jubilee’, and ‘The Coronation’.

Sir Nigel Gresley

Other highlights of the year’s programme of events include:
  • Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 February: a Gresley theme to the Festival of British Railway Modelling at Doncaster Racecourse
  • Saturday 11 April 2026: special Thanksgiving Service and Talk at St. Peter’s Church, Netherseal, Derbyshire, which will be held close to the 85th anniversary of Gresley’s death and burial at St. Peter’s Church on 9 April 1941
  • a commemorative logo for use by partner organisations.
The Trust also looks after the oldest surviving Gresley locomotive, class N2 No. 1744. The loco is currently being overhauled at the North Norfolk Railway.

It also looks after the Gresley Buffet Lounge Car No. 1852, which is the sole surviving vehicle from the 1938 Flying Scotsman train.

The Trust plans to apply for a further Heritage Fund grant to help maintain these important vehicles.

“The Heritage Fund’s generous support is a tremendous endorsement of Sir Nigel Gresley’s enduring legacy. His pioneering work revolutionised rail travel with innovation, speed and elegance, and this grant ensures our celebrations will inspire new generations. We are profoundly grateful and look forward to sharing his story through accessible, engaging initiatives.”

'Together We Roll' train crossing Dutton viaduct

Train operator Avanti West Coast has launched a photography competition dubbed ‘Together We Roll’, with the aim of celebrating local people and places along its route.

The competition invites snappers to submit an image that “perfectly captures the spirit of a community to the West Coast Main Line”.

The competition runs from Tuesday, 18 November until Sunday, 14 December 2025. Entries will be sorted into four categories:
  • Emerging artists
  • Amateur photographers
  • Professional photographers
  • Our People.
The operator’s aim in launching the competition is to acknowledge the role that the railway plays in connecting people and places.

It also forms part of its celebration of the bicentenary of the modern railway.

Avanti says that it is looking forward to receiving entries that reflect cultural heritage, personal interactions or celebrations, and which showcase the people and places in a way that recognises their connection to the railway.

Baraka Carberry with the new wrap

The competition comes after Avanti West Coast launched a Together We Roll train wrap earlier this year.

The wrap, created by Midlands-based, British-Guyanese digital artist Baraka Carberry, celebrates the diversity of workers and communities across the operator’s network.

Commissioning the train wrap formed part of the company’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.

The operator’s previous train wraps include a Pride train in 2020.

The competition will be judged by a panel, including Baraka Carberry, professional photographers, and railway journalists.

Winning photographs will be published in Modern Railways Magazine and will be displayed at stations on the West Coast Main Line.

They will also be included in a presentation during a private event, which Avanti West Coast will host at The National Gallery in London.

Winners will receive a pair of First Class tickets.

We hope to capture a unique snapshot of the West Coast that can be enjoyed by the millions of people who travel through our stations each year.”

Network Rail issues safety warning after road bridge in Powys struck seven times in 2025

Region & Route: Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

train.jpg

Abergavenny Road Bridge, Powys, strike

Network Rail is urging drivers to “Wise Up, Size Up” after a local railway bridge was struck multiple times this year - causing repeated disruption for passengers and road users, and racking up significant, avoidable costs for taxpayers.

The Abergavenny Road bridge, in Caersws, has been hit 12 times by road vehicles since January 2024, causing more than 1,100 minutes of train delays and costing more than £46,000 in taxpayer-funded repairs and disruption.

Each incident has forced the A470 to close temporarily, leading to significant delays for both rail passengers and road users.

Abergavenny Road Bridge Powys

Despite the presence of multiple warning signs on approaches to the bridge over the Cambrian railway line, over-height vehicles continue to collide with the bridge - creating serious safety risks, unnecessary costs and inconvenience.

While clear signage is already in place on the approach to the Abergavenny Road bridge, Network Rail has plans to install new signs, in the coming months.

This forms part of a wider programme of investment in safety measures and driver education to reduce bridge strikes across the Wales.

train.jpg

Abergavenny Road Bridge Powys

The reminder comes as Network Rail Wales and Borders route reinforces its national “Wise Up, Size Up” campaign during Road Safety Week.

Drivers are being urged to know the height and width of their vehicles before starting their journey, with reminders now appearing at motorway service stations nationwide - including posters and pump-top messages at petrol stations.

train.jpg

Abergavenny Road Bridge Powys

Rebecca Watling, Head of Performance at Network Rail Wales and Borders said, “When a vehicle hits a bridge, it creates a serious safety risk and causes major disruption to the railway, with trains stopped for essential inspections and repairs - meaning people miss important appointments or connections”

“These incidents also carry a significant cost to the public purse - money that could be far better spent on upgrading and maintaining our rail network.

“I’d like to remind all drivers to check the height and width of their vehicles and follow the safety signage on the approach to railway bridges as incidents like this are entirely avoidable.”

train.jpg

Abergavenny Road Bridge Powys

Deb Justice, Cambrian Railway Partnership Community Rail Development Officer said, “This affects not only local journeys on our trains but rail travel across the whole of Wales and Borders. We’re asking drivers to take a moment to check the height and width of their vehicles before setting out.

"It’s a small action, but one that can make a huge difference to the safety and reliability of travel for both rail passengers and road users.”
