Tuesday/Martes 4 February/Febrero 2025

A day in the hotel room.

I've been able to collect a trays of food from the restaurant for Cleo.

By the end of the day, she's seems to be improving and I'm tolerating my discomfort from the bug, but it's left me feeling really tired.

Wednesday/Martes 5 February/Febrero 2025

After spending what seemed like an eternity in the hotel room with two English TV channels.

We venture out for supplies at the local supermarket and for a drink, singular, at our favourite hotel, Hotel Riudor.

We passed our one of our favourite pubs from our last visit here, 'The Surprise Attack', sadly closed at this part of the season.

Thursday/Jueves 6 February/Febrero 2025

So after no ill effects from yesterday.

Cleo is now pretty well over her bug, sadly for me, I'm still suffering, but I'm going to try my best to have a better time of our remaining time in Spain.

One of our favourite pubs, 'Gold Dollar Saloon' reopened last Saturday and now I'm determined to have a few pints today. :toast:

Cleo had a couple cocktails and I had a couple of 2 pints for €3 deals [x4 pints Amstel].

Friday/Jueves 7 February/Febrero 2025

Our last full day in Spain.

Today we just popped out to buy a whole load of Gin for our duty free allowance for the return journey on Saturday.

We are allowed 8 litres of spirits as our joint allowance.

So I bought 6 litres of Gin in plastic bottles, the maximum weight I can carry to keep within our airline baggage weight allowance.

And then returned to the hotel to pack.

Engineering work to affect journeys between Swansea and Carmarthen/Llandrindod on two weekends in February

Region & Route: Wales & Western | Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

train.jpg

Stock picture of track renewal

Passengers are urged to check before they travel between Swansea and Carmarthen/Llandrindod on two weekends in February when Network Rail will be carrying out a range of essential work, including track renewals and resignalling.

Buses will replace trains between Swansea and Carmarthen, and between Swansea and Llandrindod (on the Heart of Wales line), all day on Saturday and Sunday 15-16 February and on Sunday 23 February.

But, crucially for rugby supporters wishing to travel to the Wales v Ireland Six Nations match in Cardiff on Saturday 22 February by train, services are scheduled to run on that day.

Network Rail engineers will be carrying out two separate track renewals at Llanelli on 15-16 February, replacing 400 tonnes of ballast (track stone), 310 sleepers and 550 metres of rail.

Elsewhere on the line, essential signalling work will be carried out at five level crossings while engineers will also carry out work relating to the Access For All footbridge at Llanelli station.

On 23 February, engineers will replace nearly 500 tonnes of ballast, 423 sleepers and more than 800 metres of rail at Llandeilo, while follow-up work will be carried out at Llanelli.

In addition to the Swansea-Carmarthen/Llandrindod closure, passengers are reminded that buses will replace trains between Bristol Parkway and Newport/Cardiff Central after 8.35pm on Sunday 16 February due to track work in the Severn Tunnel.

Nick Millington, Network Rail Wales and Borders route director, said: “We are working really hard to improve train service punctuality across the route, and this essential work is a part of our commitment to do that.

“We recognise there is never a good time to close the railway, but we have planned the renewals to minimise disruption as much as possible, with a wide range of work being carried out during these two weekends. This includes track renewal and essential work to renew the time-served signalling equipment with a much more reliable system that will be commissioned later in 2025.

“We are also conscious of the number of rugby supporters west of Swansea who rely on train services on Six Nations match days, so there will be no engineering work on this stretch of the route on 22 February.

“I would like to thank passengers for their patience and urge them to check their journeys before travelling.”

Vital £15m engineering work to close parts of the Cambrian line for 16 days from mid-March

Region & Route: Wales & Western | Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

1739118614185.png

Work on the Cambrian line will close the line for 16 days

Passengers are being urged to check before they travel on the Cambrian line from mid-March to early April when Network Rail will be carrying out a range of work across a 16-day period.

As part of a £15 million investment in the railway, engineers will be carrying out multiple track and drainage renewals, a bridge renewal, embankment work, vegetation management and track maintenance across various sites, between Monday 17 March and Wednesday 2 April.

Buses will replace trains:
  • Between Newtown and Aberystwyth from Monday 17 March until 9am on Friday 21 March
  • Between Machynlleth and Pwllheli from Monday 17 March until 9am on Friday 21 March
  • Between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth from 6pm on Friday 21 March until Wednesday 2 April
Network Rail and Transport for Wales (TfW) have worked closely together to maximise the amount of work done while the line is closed, reducing the total impact on passengers by avoiding eight days of further line closures over the next three years.

Closing the railway for this period will allow Network Rail to bring forward work scheduled for 2026 and 2027 and deliver multiple key projects at once, minimising future disruption and saving £1.5 million in the process.

During the 16 days the line is closed, Network Rail engineers will be completing a range of work, including:
  • Track renewals: Replacing the existing, life-expired track at sites between Machynlleth and Dovey Junction, and between Machynlleth and Caersws.
  • Track maintenance: Carrying out essential maintenance of the track at multiple sites, including between Shrewsbury and Welshpool, and between Caersws and Newtown.
  • Embankment strengthening: Stabilising the embankment next to the railway near Talerddig by installing rock netting.
  • Bridge renewals: Refurbishing a railway bridge wall at Glantwymyn, between Machynlleth and Caersws.
  • Vegetation clearance: Teams will cut back trees and hedges that are either diseased or overgrown and could pose a significant threat to the railway at various sites between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth.
In addition to the continued safe and reliable running of train services along this busy route, the track renewal at Machynlleth station will pave the way for the introduction of TfW’s new Class 197 trains.

Nick Millington, Network Rail Wales and Borders route director, said: “We recognise there is never a good time to close the railway for a significant amount of time, but we have planned this essential work to minimise disruption as much as possible.

“To maximise efficiency and minimise future disruption, we have brought forward and included work that was scheduled to take place over the next two years.

“The scale of the work being carried is significant, with £15 million and thousands of hours of work being invested into improving the Cambrian line.

“We would like to thank passengers for their patience – and urge them to check their journeys before they travel.”

Colin Lea, TfW planning and performance director, said: “This work is the result of months of careful planning with our partners in Network Rail to ensure as little customer impact as possible.

“It’s a huge investment in the line, following the major refurbishment of Barmouth Bridge in 2023.

“As a targeted approach through our Local Railway Partnership we’ve identified a way of reducing the total time the railway is closed, and to complete the work ahead of the key Easter and summer periods.

“Our operational teams have put a dedicated rail replacement plan in place for the duration of the work - customers should check their journey details before they travel.”

Passengers are advised to check before they travel at www.journeycheck.com/tfwrail or www.nationalrail.co.uk

Renewing railway track

Train services west of Swansea and on the Heart of Wales Line are set to be disrupted on the next two weekends.

Work will take place on Saturday, 15th, Sunday, 16th and Sunday, 23rd February between Swansea and Carmarthen and between Swansea and Llandrindod Wells.

Crucially, no work will take place on Saturday, 22nd February, and train services are scheduled to run that day, which is the day of the Wales v Ireland Six Nations match in Cardiff.

While trains are suspended, a rail-replacement bus service will run all day between Swansea and Carmarthen and between Swansea and Llandrindod Wells on the Heart of Wales Line.

On 15th/16th February, Network Rail engineers will renew 550 metres of track and 310 sleepers and replace 400 tonnes of ballast at Llanelli.

Elsewhere on the line, improvements will be made to signalling at five level crossings and carry out work relating to the Access For All footbridge at Llanelli station.

On 23rd February, more than 800 metres of rail, 500 tonnes of ballast, and 423 sleepers will be renewed at Llandeilo, and further work will be carried out at Llanelli.

Although not directly affected by the Swansea area work, buses will replace trains between Bristol Parkway and Newport/Cardiff Central track after 8.35 pm on Sunday, 16th February because of work in the Severn Tunnel.

The Heart of Wales Line is popular with walkers, and the Heart of Wales Line Community Rail Partnership has a bilingual website with details of circular walks that start at stations along the line.

These are in addition to walks from railway stations across Wales produced by Transport for Wales in partnership with Wales’ leading walking charity, Ramblers Cymru.

Steam locomotive 7812 Erlestoke Manor set for Gwili Railway visit

train.jpg

G.W.R. 7812 Erlestoke Manor approaching The small cutting on Eardington bank S.V.R on January 2, 2025

The Gwili Railway in Carmarthenshire has announced the second locomotive that will make a guest appearance at their spring gala on the 15th and 16th of March.

No. 7812 Erlestoke Manor will be attending the event thanks to a collaborative effort between the Erlestoke Manor Fund and its home on the Severn Valley Railway.

Its visit is not only part of Railway 200 but is marking a more poignant anniversary, which is the 60th Anniversary in which the last Manor ran between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth before passenger services were withdrawn.

The news is very much welcomed by the Gwili Railway, having already announced the appearance of No.5521/ L150 from the Epping Ongar Railway.

With the final running of 64xx No.6430, which is on long-term loan to the railway, it will be the first time in Gwili’s 40-year preservation history that three GWR locomotives have run on the railway at the same time.

To give it more of an authentic feel, the three locomotives also represent some of the most common locomotives that used to be seen around South-West Wales.

L150 on the Epping Ongar Railway

Another highlight of the weekend will see the launch into service of the newly-restored British Railways MK1 compartment coach as part of Fox & Edwards Events’.

This gala event has cost over £30,000 to hold and is expected to draw many people, not just those who live locally but enthusiasts from across the country.

The opportunity to ride behind a Manor on part of the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line for the first time in 60 years will be too good an opportunity not to be missed.

Drone event to help celebrate Railway 200 in Durham

train.jpg

S&DR200 opening

The S&DR200 festival – marking the two hundredth anniversary of the passenger railway journey on the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) – is to launch with an open-air event in Bishop Auckland on Saturday 29 March 2025.

Organisers promise “dazzling projections, drones and up to 100 live performers bringing history to life”.

The local councils for Darlington borough, Durham county and Stockton-on-Tees borough are delivering the festival.

A National Lottery grant is also helping the Stockton and Darlington Railway to celebrate its bicentenary.

The festival will include a recreation of the first journey on the S&DR hauled by a replica of Locomotion No. 1. It will also feature large-scale outdoor events, and exhibitions about the history of railways.

The launch event, All Change, will present two centuries of railway history, marking historical moments from the Industrial Revolution to the present.

The organisers say that it aims to celebrate “the transformative power of trains on the landscape and our lives”.

The event will feature large-scale set pieces, projection mapping and original music.

A fleet of four hundred drones, provided by SKYMAGIC, will provide a visual show with the night sky as background.

The show will last for twenty-five minutes, and is suitable for all ages.

Performance company imitating the dog is creating All Change.

On 27 September 1825, Locomotion no.1 hauled the first passenger train along a twenty-six-mile journey between Shildon and Stockton via Darlington.

Running in progress update on steam locomotive 134

train.jpg

134 at Caernarfon Station ahead of its loaded test run

Dinas-based NG15 No. 134 has been undergoing running in after its lengthy overhaul in North Wales, and we spoke with Adrian Strachan to find out whats next.

Back in September, the locomotive appeared at the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway‘s Super Power Event as a soft launch for the locomotive, where it was in light steam on display for photos.

Since September, over 200 miles of running in have been completed, and Adrian says that only very minor adjustments have been made.

Through the Autumn, the locomotive has successfully been gauged between Caernarfon and Rhyd Ddu.
