Who put him up there?
Did they really think he'd win the election?

Republican voters put him up there. Because the story of the GOP since 2008 has been one of a continued and sustained descent into the rhetoric of race baiting and conspiracy theories. Because instead of working towards bipartisanship, Tea Partiers like Ted Cruz went to Washington with the express purpose of shutting down the legislature, and shutting down the government.

And it's all well and good for Republicans to say they don't support what Donald Trump is saying or doing, but at some point you have to own your candidate. You voted for him, as a party. You share the blame for his actions and words.

The real reason why many Republicans don't support Trump is not the ideas but the fact that he is a freak and becoming quite unpopular.

As St George points out, if he didn't represent the GOP "values" he wouldn't be their candidate, to me all the lost support means Republicans now realising he's gonna lose.

"I apple-ogize for anybody that was offended". I completely agree with you, Lennart. The Republicans that "un-endorsed" Trump after The Tape was released have now re-endorsed him because the vast majority of Republican voters support Trump. These politicians lack any kind of a backbone, except for perhaps House Speaker Paul Ryan. If the Republicans narrowly keep their House majority, expect the "Freedom Caucus" to mount a major campaign against Ryan during the election for Speaker.

Here's the third debate, which might as well have been the real one:
