Would anyone be interested in playing a Fantasy Formula 1 game this year? It's very low commitment, just 2 names roughly once a fortnight.

Expressions of (dis)interest and/or any comments on the rules are welcome.



The RL Sport
The season runs from March to November, with 19 races worldwide in 2014. Most races are a fortnight apart, with a few 3- or 1-week gaps. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/race-calendar/ for details. There are 11 teams, each with 2 regular drivers. Occasionally substitute drivers are used (for example Heike Kovelainen last year). The drivers win points based on the finishing position in the race as follows:
  • 1st - 25 points
  • 2nd -18
  • 3rd - 15
  • 4th -12
  • 5th - 10
  • 6th - 8
  • 7th - 6
  • 8th - 4
  • 9th - 2
  • 10th - 1
(Last year 18 of the 23 drivers won at least 1 point.)

Fantasy League rules:
  1. Prior to each race, players choose 2 drivers.
  2. Each driver may only be picked twice over the whole season.
  3. Picks must be posted by the Friday before the race, no later than 5 hours after final practice.
  4. If no choice is made, then the two lowest-ranked eligible drivers will be assigned. The rankings as displayed on http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/driver...nship/standings will be used for this purpose. Any unranked substitute driver is assumed to be at the bottom of the list.
  5. The players win points based on the classification of 'their' drivers at the end of the race as per the table above. Any subsequent penalties or disqualifications are not applied to the fantasy league score.


For interest
Mathematically, a total of 817 is possible, but that would require at least 10 different drivers to win one race each (9 of them twice), and another set of different drivers to place second. This is is extremely unlikely, and picking them all would be amazing. In practice, I predict the winning score will be well under 300

It would be great to see Alonso win in Spain again.

4. If no choice is posted, or an invalid choice of driver is made, then the lowest-ranked eligible driver(s) will be assigned. The rankings as displayed on http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/driver...nship/standings will be used for this purpose. Any unranked substitute driver is assumed to be at the bottom of the list.

6. Driver choices may be amended up to the deadline, but the player should make it clear that this has happened. (A new post is preferred to an edit.)

7. In the RL sport, double points will be awarded for the final race (and possibly others). This will not apply to the fantasy league - all races will use the table above.

8. If a race is cancelled for any reason (e.g. Sochi), then no fantasy points will be awarded, and any pre-registered driver picks will be available for other races.

Matilda Love has a good day at the races, overtaking BT. Alunya's support for Alonso puts him ahead of Hydroponic nation. Wopruthien and Almonaster pick up identical points on different strategies. No change at the bottom of the league.

Correction : Alunya has only picked Bianchi once, so may select him once more.

An incident-packed race with a high rate of attrition. Bianchi failed to observe a stop-go penalty but finished the race in 8th, so under league rules scores 4 points regardless of any subsequent action. Wop managed to pick a survivor, so edges ahead at the top of the table. The midfield players all did well, leaving WFA 19 and The Bruce further behind. They still have options on the top drivers, so could still catch up.

An amazing race, full of incidents. The Marussias took each other out on the first lap, giving a long run behind safety car. Hamilton dropped out with ERS/brake problems. Rosberg had the same fault, but managed to keep running. There were 4 other retirals. Massa was leading at one point, but had to pit. He then was challenging later on but ended up taking out Sergio Perez in a huge crash on the last lap. Meanwhile the Red bulls had been picking up the pieces and Ricciardo grabbed his first ever win.

Hydroponic nation did very well this time, and Matilda Love made solid gains. I seem to have a real talent for picking drivers who crash out while well up in the points. Wopruthien edges further ahead, and The Bruce still slumbers at the rear.

Another fascinating race, with Hamilton making up 5 places on the opening lap but just failing to catch Rosberg at the end. The Williams cars had profited from mistakes by both Mercedes drivers in qualifying, but couldn't quite hold on in the race. The Force India strategists did a brilliant job again, helping Perez to climb from 16th to 5th. Vettel had a series of problems with his car and retired early, leaving Ricciardo to scrape 4 points for Red Bull on their 'home' circuit.

In the fantasy league, things couldn't be much closer - Matilda Love vaults into the lead by a single point, while Almonaster and Hydroponic Nation make strong progress. Boreal Tundra stays in touch, while those on the bottom still have strong picks available if they wake up.
 
Despite a minor distraction going on in Brazil, it's race time at Silverstone this weekend. As usual, picks by Friday evening please.

I missed this race, as I was with friends who were watching the Wimbledon final. (Excellent, btw)

An early crash by Raikonnen took Massa out of the running. Hamilton, Alonso and Bottas all charged through the field. Unfortunately Rosberg had to retire with a gear failure before we could see whether Hamilton could pass him in a direct challenge. For Red Bull, Ricciardo outperformed Vettel again. Button and Alonso fought hard to make 4th and 6th for McLaren and Ferrari respectively.

In the fantasy league Hydroponic Nation has made good use of his Mercedes picks, getting 3 firsts and a second from the 4 allowed and jumping to the top of the table. Matilda love still has 2 to go, but meanwhile has dropped down to 4th place, with Wop and myself picking up intermediate points. The tail-enders are starting to pick up points from the default drivers while those in front start to run out of good picks. The table may start to close from here on in.

Massa and Magnussen had a touch on the first corner, and Massa ended up flipping his car. He was OK, but out of the race. Hamilton charged up the field from 20th but collected some damage to his front wing which eventually kept him in 3rd behind a very composed Bottas. Rosberg had little to trouble him up front. There was some excellent racing in the midfield, particularly a duel between Alonso and Ricciardo with Alonso finally claiming 5th place.

Inspired choices from Wopruthien this time see him jump to a strong 2nd place. None of the other active players scored at all.

Please note that Andre Lotterer will be replacing Kamui Kobayashi at Caterham for Spa, and possibly for more races later. As per rule 4, he will automatically be one of the default drivers for this race.
