Carcassonne: August Update

Elections for the offices of Citizen-Speaker and Minister-President concluded in July. The incumbents, Citizen-Speaker Epithemia and Minister-President Pauline Bonaparte, won re-election to a second and final term. The second-place finishers in Carcassonne's ranked-choice elections were Mongehai for Citizen-Speaker and Diano for Minister-President. In Carcassonne, these regional positions are known as the Elected Offices. The Citizen-Speaker administers the business of the Ecclesia, Carcassonne's legislature, and presides over legislative votes. The Minister-President serves as the head-of-government of the Crowned Republic, and appoints a cabinet to aid in administration.

Citizen-Speaker Epithemia appointed Dhofar and Mongehai as Clerks in the new term, to help with managing the growing Ecclesia and to train the next generation of leaders in the legislature. Minister-President Pauline Bonaparte, in a similar vein, appointed Carcassonne's first full cabinet. Dhofar, previously Minister of Culture and Engagement, was moved to the position of Minister of Engagement and Benot, known as Carcassonne's poet-laureate, was appointed Minister of Culture. Rounding out the new cabinet are Diano as Minister of Home Affairs and Reside as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The focus from the government in its second term will be solidifying the gains Carcassonne has made since its founding in April, and training the next generation of Carcassonnais leadership. Our next elections in October will be arriving soon!




In July, the Grand Army of the Crowned Republic concluded its operation in NATO 2022 Frontier. Originally deployed to aid our embassy partners The East Pacific in their mission there, the Grand Army stayed for the duration of the occupation. The invasion of NATO 2022 Frontier was originally motivated by a desire to crush fascist-aligned elements in the region. Four soldiers of the Grand Army participated in this occupation: Mongehai, Stelmund, Diano, and The Pyros.

In Carcassonne, the Grand Army of the Crowned Republic serves as the region's military and is led by His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor Ysengrim. An independently-aligned force, the Army deploys on order of His Imperial Majesty to enact the Republic's foreign policy abroad. Participation in the Grand Army is open to any citizen with an available WA nation and serves as a path for advancement for many new Carcassonnais.




A trade conflict between the nations of Femcia and the Pyros threatens to unravel the delicate peace in Carcaso that has stood since the end of the Great War in the mid 20th century. The conflict, originally motivated by Femcian opposition to admitting the Pyros into the Carcaso Global Trade Organization (CGTO), continues to escalate and seems to sit on the precipice of open violence. Femcia, a long-standing member of the CGTO, opposes the admission of the Pyros into the organization due to the human rights conditions in the latter nation, which have been called "authoritarian" by outside observers.

Following this initial diplomatic salvo, trade observers in the CGTO have reported that Femcia has continued to reduce trade quotas with the Pyros, which seems set to escalate into a full embargo on Pyros-produced materiel. Femcian wargames have also increased, with naval operations seeing greater reach and urgency, and Queen Kiara's recent announcement that all international flights to the Pyros from Femcia will cease seems sure to further inflame tensions. The representative from the Pyros to the CGTO says the recent aggression has gone "too far", but any further plans remain secret for the time being.

In the recent row over CGTO membership for the Pyros, the nation of Benot announced support for the nation's admittance to the organization, with Roighelm joining the opposition. Mongehai and Qigezhou remain neutral on the matter, but if these positions remain static should war break out remains to be seen. For now, the peace that has prevailed in Carcaso for more than a half-century seems very uneasy.
