Petr Hrubý was 10 years old the first time he realised what life likely had in store for him. His father, Milan, came home from his shift at the VýchodSolná Těžba-owned salt mine. A representative from the Company was waiting for him. Milan removed his cloth hat, and ushered his family out of the small living room in the Company-provided single floor home they lived in. Petr couldn’t see his father as the door was shut, but the tension felt by his mother Lenka and elder brother Tomáš was evident on their faces. Tomáš was 13, and clearly knew what was going on.
The meeting between Milan and the Company man went on for twenty minutes, but it was clear by the end of it that the family had been dealt a heavy blow. Milan wouldn’t tell them what was said, but Petr noticed a piece of paper on the table that his father quickly hid in a drawer that he locked with a key. Later that night, Petr snuck back into the living room, and opened the drawer to read the form. Petr couldn’t understand it all, but he did understand numbers, and the numbers filled him with dread.

VÝCHODSOLNÁ TĚŽBA A.S.
“Salt Runs in the Blood. So Must Duty.”
Petr jumped as a hand clamped down on his shoulder. He turned around quickly, trying to hide what he had learned, but his brother Tomàš had already seen. He simply said, “Now you have to grow up,” before leaving the room, leaving Petr alone. He put the form back in the drawer, and went back to bed - without any of the sleep he desperately wanted.
The next dawned and Petr woke up in a changed world. Everything now had a price on it, from food to school supplies to even the air he breathed. He couldn’t tell his teacher what was clearly worrying him, she also worked for the Company. The Company owned the schools. They owned the houses. They owned the roads and the railway and everything else. The Company, ultimately, owned himself.
When Petr was 13, Tomáš left. Petr woke one morning to find his brother gone. He asked his mother where he was and she explained that he had joined the army of Canwyr. Very few Rhuvish were allowed to join the military, and it was an escape from the Company. Petr desperately wanted to follow his elder brother.
When Petr was 14, there was an accident.
Brine Shaft 12 collapsed. Milan Hrabý, Emil Zvara, Filip Valenta, Břetislav Kovář and Jaroš Svarti were all killed. Ivana Horváthová and Erik Novotný went missiled and were declared dead.
And the Company sent a man to Petr’s house the next day. Petr would be required to work in the mine, for the Company, to pay his father’s debt, which was now his. There would be no escape. There was only the Company.
