Repeal: “Protecting Press Freedoms”
Category: Repeal | GA #644
Proposed by: Wimahl | No on site topic
Replacement: < None >

General Assembly Resolution #644 “Protecting Press Freedoms” (Category: Education and Creativity; Area of Effect: Free Press) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Recognizing, that ensuring the freedom of the press is of the utmost concern to the World Assembly;

Believing, that all human beings, regardless of any factor, should have the right to obtain information concerning national and international political affairs from independent sources;

Aware, that children and adolescents have the innate desire to learn and understand the world;

Acknowledging, that the understanding of certain topics that may be disturbing is important for a person to understand the current state of the world;

Taking into consideration, that clause (4) of the General Assembly Resolution #644, "Protecting Press Freedoms," denies minors the right to learn about topics important to the development of their understanding of the world;

Bearing in mind, that the lack of a definition for "content inappropriate for consumption by minors" makes unclear what constitutes such content, allowing for the abuse of clause (4) of GAR #644 to restrict the access by minors of information about certain sensitive topics, including sexual education and current politics;

Figuring, that preventing minors from accessing information from the press about topics deemed "inappropriate" is denying them a right to obtain accurate and unbiased information, thus being contrary to the core beliefs of the World Assembly;

And believing, that it is in the best interest of the World Assembly that GAR #644 be replaced with a resolution more protective of the right to obtain information;

The World Assembly hereby repeals General Assembly Resolution #644, "Protecting Press Freedoms."

This proposal has one argument, and that one argument is not particularly compelling. There is a compelling need to balance the right of minors to protected from harmful content with the right of free press. By not specifying what qualifies as “appropriate”, the target allows member-nations to strike that balance. In the absence of a replacement, that allowance is the current best solution. Therefore, I am against this proposal.

...on the basis of a lack of replacement only; I will comment additionally that the lack of a forum draft is unfortunate.

Against due to the author’s regional affiliation, which is subject to our sanctions.
