1,000 visitors attend Northamptonshire gala

Bagnall No.2 with anniversary headboard at Pitsford & Brampton

Northampton and Lamport Railway is celebrating the success of its Thirtieth Anniversary Gala over the August Bank Holiday weekend, to which it welcomed more than a thousand 1,000 visitors.

The Railway overcame what it calls “some testing challenges” to run a busy timetable over the weekend.

Four locomotives and two demonstration freight trains were in action, alongside vintage bus rides, miniature train rides, model railways, live music and food, and craft and gift stalls.

Unfortunately, one of the Gala’s guest locomotives was unable to attend the event.

The previous weekend, ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway ’27’ class 0-6-0 No. 52322 failed with boiler problems at the East Lancashire Railway.

The Northampton and Lamport Railway’s resident Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 3193 had returned to traffic on Sunday 23 August after being out of service for repairs for a year and a half, so was able to join the roster for the event.

It shared hauling duties with Bagnall No. 2842 0-4-0ST ‘Kent Electric Power Co Ltd No.2’ and Class 31s locomotives 31289 and 31601.

The event began with an opening ceremony on Saturday 29 August, featuring speeches from local dignitaries, including Deputy Lord Lieutenant John Griff, local MP Stuart Andrew, and West Northamptonshire Council Chair Fiona Baker.

Loco no. 3193 then broke through a commemorative banner, in a recreation of the railway’s Grand Opening in 1996.

It was adorned with a commemorative headboard, as seen in the main picture.

Saturday’s weather was particularly wet, but Sunday and Monday saw better conditions.

Signalling faults and complex movements meant that the timetable slipped a little, but all locomotives ran without any problems.

The Railway is now preparing for its Cheese and Cider Train this Sunday (6 September) and its Hocus Pocus Halloween Train next month.

It was a shame that 52322 was unable to attend and the late timing meant we were unable to secure a suitable replacement. However, the return of 3193 was a major boost and it’s great to have it back in steam. Despite the minor setbacks, the event went off very well and it was great to see so many happy faces around the Railway.

Full details released of Severn Valley autumn gala

train.jpg

Hymek D7018 arriving at Kidderminster

Next month’s Autumn Diesel Bash at the Severn Valley Railway will see the railway’s own diesel fleet taking centre stage.

The Autumn Diesel Bash is an intensive four-day gala to be held from Thursday, 1st to Sunday, 4th October, that will feature arguably the UK’s most prestigious collections of heritage diesel locomotives.

Class 52 No. D1015 at Kidderminster

There will be no visiting locomotives this time, as the gala will only feature locomotives from the railway’s home fleet.

Throughout the four days, there will be an intensive operation across the full 16½-mile route between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, with an impressive range of locomotives in service.

Visitors will be able to witness examples of classes 14, 17, 20, 33, 42, 50, and 52 in action, which includes some of the rarest surviving examples from the days of diesel-hydraulic traction on Western Region main lines.

Among the locomotives in the railway’s collection are the largest number of operational Class 50 locomotives in preservation, legendary Western Region diesel-hydraulics including Class 52 Westerns and a Class 42 Warship, and the sole surviving Class 17 Clayton.

Double-headed Warships arriving at Bewdley

Operations will be based at the Severn Valley Railway’s multi-million-pound diesel traction maintenance depot at Kidderminster, which has the facilities to undertake major overhauls and complete locomotive rebuilds, and where locomotives are maintained to both the standards required for intensive operation on both heritage railways and mainline duties.

The Autumn Diesel Bash will provide a rare opportunity to see this collection working at scale, with locomotives allocated to passenger services throughout the event and the timetable designed to keep the railway’s diesel fleet busy throughout the four days.

Further information about the Autumn Diesel Bash, and a full 4-day timetable and details of locomotive allocations, can be found here.

Last Monday, the railway lifted the steam ban which had been in force due to the hot weather, and started a trial with West Midlands Railway to see if there is demand for a direct commuter service between Bewdley and Birmingham.

“We’re incredibly proud of our diesel fleet, and this year’s Autumn Diesel Bash gives us the perfect opportunity to let it shine. Our diesel locomotives are maintained and operated by an incredibly dedicated team of staff and volunteers. They are a vital part of keeping the railway running, as we’ve seen during the recent extended period of hot, dry weather when diesel traction has stepped in to operate all our passenger services. I’m especially looking forward to being part of the event from the cab. I’ve been a volunteer diesel driver at the SVR for many years, so it’s a real privilege to be able to combine my role as chief executive with something I’ve always loved doing, driving these magnificent locomotives. We have an extraordinary collection at the Severn Valley Railway, and we’re very excited about giving it the platform it deserves.”

Gus Dunster, Chief Executive Officer, Severn Valley Railway

The Leighton Buzzard Railway in Bedfordshire found itself besieged during the August Bank Holiday weekend, when it was attacked by Pirates, but they were repelled by large numbers of visitors, who fought the pirates off with water pistols.

The Pirate Attack was the latest event at the railway, with volunteers and visitors joining in the spirit of the occasion by dressing in full costume.

The attack took place at Munday’s Hill, where full trains took guests to confront a Pirate Ship, which was lying in wait.

Water pistols attacking the Leighton Buzzard Railway

All those who took part agreed it was great fun, and the railway is already making plans in case pirates attack the railway again next year.

Plans are now being made for Halloween activities on Saturday, 31st October, which will take place at both Page’s Park and Stonehenge.

The railway ends its regular running season on the following day, Sunday, 1st November, when Saturday’s events will continue with more scaring, a bit more sugar, and definitely some last spooky fun.

Visitors will be able to get into the thrill of Halloween when they arrive at Pages Park, where volunteers in horrifying costumes will welcome them to the station, which will be adorned with creepy and spooky decorations.

Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the occasion by also dressing up, and the railway has assured everybody that witches, wizards, ghouls, and ghosties will find themselves at home.

The Pirate attack was in great contrast to a Dinosaur Day in July, when Tyrannosaurus Rex and some smaller dinosaurs entertained a large crowd of excited families at Stonehenge Works Station.

Safety Digest issued following collision in north London

Damage to the front of the train

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has issued a safety digest following its investigation into an incident in which a passenger train collided with rail handling trolleys in north London.

The collision happened near Queens Park station, a few miles from London Easton on 9th May this year.

A passenger train, travelling at 77 mph, struck two manually-propelled rail handling trolleys, fortunately, without any reported injuries.

Remains of one of the rail handling trolleys after the collision

The trolleys had been used during overnight engineering works to transport sections of rail, but had inadvertently been left on the Up Fast line, which carries trains travelling towards London, after the work was completed.

The train was not derailed but sustained minor damage and was unable to continue in service.

Staff who had been using the trolleys did not realise they had been left on the track before the line was reopened to trains, and the train that struck the trolley was the first to use the line after it reopened.

During the night of the incident, Network Rail was undertaking inspection and repair work with two maintenance teams at multiple locations on the line.

A controller of site safety (COSS) had been assigned to each team, who was responsible to the team for establishing and briefing a safe system.

All lines at the collision site had been blocked under a possession.

Location of the two rail handling trolleys

As a result of their investigation, the RAB has issued the following important safety messages:
  • Controllers of site safety must ensure the location of on-track equipment such as trolleys is clearly communicated and recorded.
  • Before a line is declared open for service, controllers of site safety must check that all equipment has been removed from the track, particularly when there has been a transfer of responsibility.
  • Vehicle management forms must be used as part of the line clear verification process when Network Rail staff and contractors have been working in axle counter areas.
  • A planned safe system of work must be implemented through using safe work packs, which must include copies of all relevant forms that will be needed by controllers of site safety.
  • Network Rail staff and contractors who have responsibility for trolleys used on track must ensure they are fitted with lighting to improve their conspicuity during darkness, and that the lighting is operational.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is involved whenever there is a collision on Britain’s railways, with the most prominent in recent times being a collision in June between two passenger trains in Bedfordshire.
