East Sussex Train Derailment: Line reopens after repairs completed

train.jpg

Drone shot of the derailed train near Lewes

On the 13th August, a train derailed near Lewes station, with 3 of the 8 carriages derailing and overturning.

Thankfully, no one had major injuries, and an investigation and major recovery operation have been underway.

Work has been progressing well, allowing the line between Haywards Heath and Lewes to reopen today (1st September).

The train has been successfully recovered, and Network Rail engineers have been working to rebuild and repair the railway, with significant testing carried out to ensure the safety of the equipment.

During the work, engineers were able to construct temporary foundations to allow specialist Kirow cranes to recover the carriages.

Once removed, work could start to remove and replace damaged equipment and repair the embankment.

Work takes place at the site of the Lewes train derailment

Engineers faced the extra challenge of navigating the sensitive environmental area due to its proximity to the River Ouse, requiring them to coordinate work with environmental teams.

While services are resuming, passengers are still advised to check before they travel.

“This incident has been incredibly difficult for everyone involved and my thoughts remain with those who were injured, alongside their families, friends and all those affected.

“The closure of the railway has had a significant impact on our customers and the communities we serve. I want to thank passengers for the patience, resilience and understanding they have shown while this work has taken place.

“The successful reopening of the line is only possible because of an extraordinary effort from engineers and railway colleagues who have worked in challenging circumstances to restore services safely and as quickly as possible.

“We look forward to welcoming customers back onto the railway and returning them to the journeys they rely on every day.”

Jenny Saunders, Customers Services Director for Greater Thameslink Railway, which operates Southern Railway

Rain has been persistent across Worcestershire and Shropshire, which means that the Severn Valley Railway is able to bring steam operations back safely.

Enthusiasts and general visitors will be pleased to hear that their Autumn Steam Gala will be going ahead as planned thanks to the significant rainfall.

Steam operation was suspended at the start of August but will now be phased back into an everyday sight at the railway with the first steam service running tomorrow (2nd September).

The Autumn Steam Gala is planned for the 17th to 20th September, and the railway has said it is confident it can run the event safely without major concerns about causing lineside fires.

While there was a lack of steam at the railway, the line remained open, operated by its heritage diesel locomotives, providing a unique opportunity to experience more diesel traction.

The railway will continue to monitor risks as steam returns, and additional measures will be in place for the gala to ensure everyone’s safety.

There will be water-spraying trains and fire marshals patrolling at-risk areas along the line.

Further information on the gala can be found on the railway’s website.

“I want to give a huge thank you to all the diesel groups and their volunteers who have picked up every one of our service trains during this challenging period. They have done an absolutely amazing job, keeping our railway moving and our visitors travelling while we waited for conditions to improve.

“Their support has been hugely appreciated, and it’s a great example of the teamwork and commitment that makes the SVR special. We’re now delighted to be able to start bringing our steam locomotives back into operation, and especially pleased that this means the Autumn Steam Gala can go ahead as planned.”

SVR’s chief executive officer Gus Dunster

Commuter train trial launched at Severn Valley Railway

train.jpg

The Class 101 DMU at Bewdley before the 06:40 to Kidderminster

The Bewdley Express is part of a trial that the Severn Valley Railway is working on with West Midlands Railway to see if there is demand for a train service to/from Birmingham direct to Bewdley.

Currently, trains run to Kidderminster only, but plans are in place that would see trains swap onto SVR metals and head up to Bewdley.

The first train departed Bewdley right on time at 06:40 am to connect passengers with the mainline at Kidderminster.

train.jpg

Bob Dunn with Gus Dunster and the Mayor of Bewdley at Bewdley

This trial will see two services from Bewdley in the morning (running at 06:40 am – getting passengers into Birmingham Snow Hill at 07:46 and 07:40 am – with passengers arriving into Birmingham at 08:46).

Two services will run in the evening, arriving into Bewdley at 5:57 pm and 7:02 pm.

train.jpg

Driver Bob Dunn at the controls of the first service to Kidderminster

The Bewdley Express is the first of its kind in the UK, with passengers on normal mainline tickets travelling on part of a heritage railway.

Tickets for The Bewdley Express can be purchased from Bewdley station on the morning, with online tickets being made possible soon.

Fares are as low as £16 for a return trip between Bewdley and Birmingham, with return tickets between Bewdley and Kidderminster costing £3.60 and a single costing just £2.

Connecting mainline rail services at Kidderminster mainline station

If sufficient demand is seen in the eight-week trial, then this could help build a case to extend train services to Bewdley.

The trial runs for 8 weeks from today (1st September), with The Bewdley Express running on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week.

train.jpg

The Bewdley Express on arrival into Kidderminster

“To see the first Bewdley Express leave Bewdley this morning, with people using it to begin their working day, is a fantastic moment after months of planning and preparation.

“This service could make a real difference to people living in Bewdley and the surrounding area, giving them another option for getting to work in Birmingham and elsewhere without having to rely on the car. It also opens up wider opportunities for education, business and leisure.

“But this is a trial, and we need people to use it. The level of demand we demonstrate over the next eight weeks will be hugely important in determining whether there is a case for making services like this a permanent fixture. So, my message is simple: if this service could work for you, please give it a try, tell your friends and make use of it. The more people who use the Bewdley Express, the stronger the evidence will be for its future.”

SVR’s chief executive officer Gus Dunster

Five bidders shortlisted for Scotland’s new suburban trains

train.jpg

Current ScotRail train at Edinburgh Waverley

ScotRail has issued a shortlist of bidders to build a new fleet of trains for suburban routes.

The procurement of the new trains has now progressed to the Invitation to Negotiate (ITN) stage, after a pre-qualification stage in which potential suppliers were assessed.

The new fleet of trains will comprise at least 69 electric and battery-electric trains, with the possibility of an additional 37.

Bidders shortlisted to submit tenders were:
  • Alstom Engineering and Services Limited.
  • Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. (CAF S.A.).
  • Hitachi Rail Limited.
  • Siemens Mobility Limited.
  • Stadler Rail Schweiz AG.

Delivery of the new trains will be in the early 2030s on routes including East Kilbride, Fife, Borders, and the Glasgow inner suburban routes, and on services between Glasgow and Motherwell, Larkhall, Lanark, and Shotts.

The successful bidder will be responsible for the design, manufacture, testing, certification, commissioning, and delivery of the trains, their long-term maintenance, and supply of spares.

Features to be included in the new trains include modern air-conditioning, improved reliability of on-board connectivity and real-time information, improved accessibility, more space for bicycles, wheelchairs, and the provision of family-friendly areas.

The Scottish Government has granted approval for the new trains and for procurement to proceed; their introduction will be coordinated with further electrification by Network Rail of key routes.

Passengers are using Scotland’s trains in increasing numbers, as seen in July, when ScotRail recorded nearly 8.5 million passenger journeys, almost 900,000 more than in July last year.

“This is an exciting step forward in our plans for a new suburban train fleet for Scotland that will benefit customers for many years to come. These new modern electric and battery-electric trains will make journeys more comfortable for customers, improve accessibility and reliability, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable railway. Investment in modern trains is vital to providing a better journey experience and is central to encouraging more people to leave the car at home and travel by rail.”

Steam locomotive 1054 heads to Somerset

Engine No. 1054 on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

On the 25th-27th September, the West Somerset Railway is hosting its Autumn Steam Weekend.

Great Western Railway “Large Prairie” 4110 and Ivatt 2-6-2 Tank No. 41313 have already been announced as attendees to the event.

The last surviving ”Coal Tank” built by the London and North Western Railway in the 19th century, number 1054, is set to appear at the gala.

Originally having 300 members to its class, 1054 survived a lot, being sent for scrap in 1939, but was reinstated due to demand.

It later arrived in Abergavenny in 1954 and ran on the last passenger train between Abergavenny and Merthyr in 1958.

It was once again sent for scrap, but thanks to a public appeal, it was saved.

1054 is now under the care of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and the Bahamas Locomotive Society.

1054 visited the railway for a gala back in 2024, and this year will mark its second visit to the line.

Further information on the gala and tickets can be found online.
