Comfortable Pillows for All Protocol
Category: Regulation | Area of Effect: Consumer Protection
Proposed by: Minskiev | Onsite Topic

THIS MOST AUGUST LEAST JANUARY ASSEMBLY OF WORLDS *dun dun*,

CONSCIOUS of the numerous benefits to getting sufficient sleep, including lowering the risk for health problems, reducing stress, thinking more clearly, boosting one’s immune system, and many more,

COGNIZANT that pillows help one sleep better, aligning one’s spine and providing comfort during rest,

ALL TOO AWARE of the exhaustive list of issues of most pillows, so apparent that one could name them off with their eyes closed, in that one pillow is too low to sleep comfortably, but two pillows are too high to sleep comfortably, that both sides are too hot, that it’s not firm enough, or perhaps even that it’s too firm,

BELIEVING that the importance of proper sleep has been slept on, hereby:
  1. DEFINES, for the purposes of this resolution, a “pillow” as a typically cuboid supporting structure specifically for individuals’ heads during periods of rest,
  2. MANDATES member states to take all necessary actions so that:
    1. pillows of differing but acceptable and fit for purpose rigidities, sizes, materials, coolnesses, shapes, and functions are all widely accessible and affordable in their member state; and
    2. functioning sleep medications and sleeping devices (such as continuous positive airway pressure machines, or CPAPs) that are proven to largely mitigate the effects of sleep disorders are all widely accessible and affordable in their member state.
  3. DIRECTS member states to inform their citizenries of accurate, scientifically-backed methods to improve sleep, the problems of not getting enough sleep, and common sleep disorders and how to correct or mitigate them, and
  4. RECOMMENDS that member states use catchy abbreviations for their Section 3 sleep campaigns; some suggestions are:
    1. "Always Place Neck for Effective Alignment!" (APNEA);
    2. "Rest Long Soon!" (RLS);
    3. "I Never Sleep On Medication Now that I'm Aware!" (INSOMNIA);
    4. "Rest Beautifully Dormant!" (RBD); and
    5. "Normally All Rests are Crummy and Obstinate; Let Enjoyable Pillows Satisfy You!" (NARCOLEPSY).
Note: Only votes from TNP WA nations and NPA personnel will be counted. If you do not meet these requirements, please add (non-WA) or something of that effect to your vote.
Voting Instructions:

  • Vote Against if you want the Delegate to vote Against the resolution.

Resolution Overview
This resolution seeks to promote healthy sleep for citizens of member states. It does so by promoting the availability of sleep implements that may improve one’s sleep and via informing national populations about the problems associated with poor sleep, as well as providing catchy and thematically appropriate nicknames in an attempt to improve public engagement.

Ministry Analysis
While we may have supported a legitimate proposal guaranteeing access to acceptable bedding, this resolution does not meet that criteria. It's a joke proposal so thinly veiled that it might as well be see-through, making a mockery of the purpose of the General Assembly and its own terms and definitions in one fell swoop. Treating the General Assembly with a more light-hearted proposal is fine, but one so clearly based on a joke is not something we can support.

For the above reasons, the Ministry of World Assembly Affairs recommends a vote Against the General Assembly Resolution at vote, “Comfortable Pillows for All Protocol”.

Honestly, quite torn on this one. The policy in and of itself isn't terrible but the presentation is so cheeky that it brings down whatever good the resolution could do. Against.

This proposal has achieved the necessary support to enter the formal queue. Barring it being withdrawn or marked illegal, it will proceed to a vote at Friday's1 Minor Update.

1 Had the day wrong initially. For some reason, I thought I sent the IFV out on this on Sunday.

Funny. But against

DEFINES, for the purposes of this resolution, a “pillow” as a typically cuboid supporting structure specifically for individuals’ heads during periods of rest
Thankfully, our pillows also support other body parts and are marketed as decorations too, so the definition doesn't apply.

fwiw, the proposal doesn't need to apply to body pillows or decorative pillows. the preamble addresses pillows that align your spine. these do not. as far as I'm concerned there is no health benefit from including these :P

Fuck voted wrong one, Against. The people should have the right to sleep however they want, and no regulation should regulate their sleep habits. It's THEIRS, so it's not their responsibility.
not what it does, it doesn't regulate how you sleep. it gives tips for better sleep (not regulations)

Against (WA)

Reasons: Given that the WA is a professional international organization, it should only accept serious resolutions on major worldwide issues, not minor ones like proper sleep. A resolution to deal with hackers that could be threatening regional governments would have been a better resolution.

Edit: I define a joke resolution as a proposed resolution that exists, reach quorum, and gets turned down because it is not a serious matter that is worthy to be voted for. This pillow resolution should fall under this criteria.
