Overview

The United Republic was founded by telepathic exiles fleeing the Tellusian civil war some seven centuries before the present day, traditionally the republic traces its earliest beginnings back to the mythical Serenthia and the first consul Dravek, though many historians regard these figures as mythological rather than hard fact. The earliest mention of a historically verifiable government comes from records dating from the reign of Grand Consul Solum Agnus who is listed as the third individual to hold the title. Whatever the exact true Moebius has existed as a galactic polity for at least seven centuries and as a significant power in the periphery for nearly four.

Originally Verdant, Moebius is now largely bereft of natural environments due to centuries of urban development, the planet is an ecumenopolis with only the "Green" an area of around 84,421 km2 remaining untouched by the rapid base of urbanisation. Moebius is divided into 1000 Hubs that act as administrative divisions, the living standards of such zones vary sharply depending upon which level occupants are housed in. Traditionally the higher you go in Moebius the better the surroundings get, the average Moebian lives in the relative comfort and security of the mid-levels and has access to a high (albeit crowded) standard of living, lower levels are more rundown and hab zones closer to ground level are infamous for both gang warfare and environmental degradation.

Moebian society is diverse and capitalistic with large numbers of human and alien species living side by side in a melting pot that encourages intermingling and commerce. Walking the promenades and skyways of any Hab level an individual can expect to be bombarded with advertisements and enticed by street food vendors and the bright neon of countless entertainment complexes. Whilst the republic was governed by a small number of "old families" made up of descendants of the telepath colonists this stratification has largely faded as the offices of government have opened to anyone able to win the popular vote. Currently, the pro-alien Synthesis Party is the ruling body of the Moebian senate with its platform of multiculturalism and commercial growth being popular amongst the professionals of the middle class and various minority communities.

Moebius has grown rich as a result of both its development of the Hyperspace lanes that allow for rapid and safe transport of goods to and from the republic and because of its immense natural resources. The Moebian economy is an eclectic mix of service industries, manufacturing and raw material extraction that has proven versatile on the galactic market. Moebius is particularly noted for its development of various psychic technologies and its liberal stance on psychoactive drugs, many pharmaceuticals are for better or worse of Moebian origin. Diversification of industries combined with a large and well-educated population has allowed the republic to become the premier economic power in the Inaius Periphery.

The Republic has increasingly played the role of peacekeeper in the Periphery with the Moebian military being deployed across the region on combat operations, some worlds have welcomed the increased stability that Moebius has brought to this region of Inaius but critics have pointed out that some of the republics actions come perilously close to those of imperial powers. Nonetheless "Pax Moebia" has become a popular term in the periphery with trade and safety across the hyperspace lanes guaranteed by the imposing presence of Dravek class warships and garrisons of the Moebian marine corps.

In addition to the capital world of Moebius there are several smaller constituent worlds that make up the wider region of the republic, Bellasarius is a verdant agri-world that supplies the bulk of the republics organic foodstuffs, the desert world of Quinn meanwhile is a major port that serves as a repair and maintenance destination for military and commercial vessels. Finally, the ice world of Voss's jump, named for its discoverer the legendary solar sail explorer Tyra Voss has largely remained uninhabited save for a small settlement on the planets northern continent and several research outposts, it does, however, attract tourists and ecologists on a yearly basis thanks to its plethora of rare species (notable examples: The sword beaked Penguin, Vossian night sharks and the terror of Thull's depth).

The Republic has no official religion with freedom of belief or the lack thereof being enshrined in the Moebian constitution alongside freedom of speech and expression. However, the cult of Serenthia is undoubtedly the most prominent faith in the periphery with the bulk of adherents being located on the capital world. The Serenthian faith venerates the legendary founder of the colony Serenthia Kaan (The Angel of Moebius) who legends state merged with the noosphere of the planet to become a living deity. Serenthian faithful believe that their deity has intervened three times in Moebian history with her "returns" being documented in the sacred codex of the faith. Historians have pointed out that the individuals claiming to be Serenthia could easily have been different individuals claiming a title rather then the same person, however, the cult continues to maintain that the same Serenthia has returned to life each time. Other notable faiths include the Abramic church, The solemn deep of the Ketrian peoples and a mix of religious communities drawn from across the wider galaxy.
