4 April 2020

Welcome to the Mercanti-language livefeed for the Santonian Referendums 2020! The Kingdom of Saintonge is voting on five propositions - four constitutional amendments and one treaty ratification. Exit polling shows the constitutional amendments passing by wide margins, while the META ratification is still neck-and-neck, hence, this livefeed will be focusing on Proposition 5 (Ratification of the treaty for the Meterra Economic Treaty Association).

L'Indépendant's team will be posting updates via Facegram. Our team for tonight will be:
  • Anne-Marcelline de Saint-Corentin @AMStCorentin, Mercanti edition assistant editor
  • Brice-Gauthier Kermadec @BGKermadec, l'Indépendant's resident analyst
  • Nicolas-Martin Delerestraint @nm_delerestraint, l'Indépendant commentator
  • Finnbjörn Mösgaard @FinnbjornMosgaard, Mercanti-language reporter stationed at the Royal Elections Institute vote counting centre in the city of Saintes
  • Kyle MacTaggart-de Flesselles @KyleMdeFlesselles, Mercanti translator
  • Hunter Kidlington de Collobrières @HunterKidColl, Mercanti translator

Official results are now coming in! First department to report its result is the Hautes-Andes. The Hautes-Andes gives a slight plurality against ratifying META - 10,829 votes separate "No" from "Yes". #STGReferendum2020

Hello Nkenna! Nice to see you join us! The images are from the visualisation widget that we have on our Santonian-language website (which unfortunately we don't have a Mercanti translation of).
Under Derniers Resultats ("New Results") is the latest department to certify and submit its official results to the Royal Elections Institute. This count also includes the abstentions/blanks/spoiled ballots, which are disregarded when considering the referendum results as a whole.
The running tally is on the right as Les Résultats Nationaux ("National Results"), which shows the current total of Oui (Yes/for ratification) and Non (No/against ratification) votes. Take note that the abstentions/blanks/spoiled ballots are not considered. Départements rapportants is the number of departments that have reported their results. The widget also shows the majority and which side is leading (Oui/Non). There is also a map and a chart of the results.
On the lower left is autres départments, which shows the departments that had just reported their results, and those that have upcoming results. #STGReferendum2020

My unofficial sources here say that the reason why some of the departments are slow in certifying and counting tallies is because the votes are very close. They do believe the reporting is going to pick up steam at around 1 AM-2 AM. They expect either the Limagne or the Basses-Alpes to transmit their votes next. #STGReferendum2020

The Yes campaign should be feeling uneasy right now. The Basses-Alpes is usually a Coalition-voting department, and the Coalition supports META. META should've had a smooth sailing in this department. Instead the Basses-Alpes gave a lukewarm Yes to META. #STGReferendum2020

I don't think there will be a great effect on relations between the two countries if Saintonge joins META. What might be affected, though, would be if META directives conflict with that of YEET, which is not likely. Off the top of my head, one of the most significant changes would probably the fact that Prydanians would have a more difficult time immigrating and/or acquiring residency, now that citizens of META states will be up there in the priority list too. #STGReferendum2020

Saintonge's foreign policy will gravitate away from Craviter/Collandris/Gothis (and thus Prydania) and more towards the humongous, diverse continent where it geographically belongs. Saintonge may become the bridge between the two continents of this passes. #STGReferendum2020

The Basses-Alpes' weak Yes vote was a harbinger of a possible surprise in the east. Now the Corb voted against, albeit by a margin of four thousand votes. Quick scan of the results show the outlying intendancies voting weakly against META, giving a seventeen thousand vote deficit for the Yes side. But Plaisance's lukewarm Yes was not enough to even overcome this tiny No plurality in the outlying intendancies. #STGReferendum2020

I think it does. The weak economy and above-average unemployment in eastern Saintonge magnified the concerns that META might flood the country with cheap labour (exacerbating the unemployment and driving down wages) and/or META might cause some companies to close or move to other countries. We have seen it play in the Basses-Alpes and in the Corb - I won't be surprised if the Simbruins and other eastern departments would follow suit. This will not bode well for the Yes side, since they were expecting that the Coalition-voting east would deliver for META. #STGReferendum2020

This is just one department out of seven in the north. I'm curious to see the results in the six other departments. Northern Saintonge/Bethanian Saintonge is a stronghold of the clerical faction of the National Party, which stayed neutral on the META issue. Some of them eventually supported it, but the most prominent holdout is Justice Minister Brice-Thibault Bardoux de Rosencoat, who abstained during the ratification vote. Mr Bardoux de Rosencoat (who opposes META) and Foreign Minister Marcelline Tréhet (of the pro-META Rénovateur faction) mostly led the debates in the Bethanian-language media. #STGReferendum2020

This is like the opposite of the Avaloirs. Central Saintonge is a stronghold of the agrarian faction, which was also noncommittal on META. Many, like Marie-Annette Méjansac of the Luberon and Brice-Archambault Coutlée of the Coole, plopped for META. Only a few went against. The agrarian faction leaders like Théobald Trébuchon of the Ravennes remained mostly neutral on the issue. So Central Saintonge registering a strong vote against META is also surprising. #STGReferendum2020

The Ill votes the opposite of the Vôges - something which is not common, as the two departments generally have the same voting tendencies. Scanning the vote by intendancies, in both the Ill and the Vôges, the higher up in the valley, the lower the YES vote: Bronn (Ill) 55.65% YES > Brizambourg (Ill) 50.62% YES = Bréhaut (Vôges) 50.62% YES > St-Thélo (Vôges) 41.63% YES. Don't be fooled by the big difference between the Coole and the Doire - both central departments. The more rural parts of the Coole and the Doire gave a slight plurality for NO (for instance, St-Georges-sur-Coole was 46.6% YES/47.6% NO; Quinçay in the Doire was 46.2% YES/48.0% NO). The cause of their disparity was that the Coole had smaller and fewer provincial towns and cities that would give a YES vote. Malençon was not able to outvote the more substantial rural parts of the Coole. On the other hand, Loudun, Tilly-la-Campagne, and Gien were able to overcome the small NO margin brought by rural Doire. #STGReferendum2020

Agreed. The YES camp and the Prime Minister must be very nervous right now. The Sambre's vote is a close 45.5% YES / 49.2% NO and gave a minuscule 44K plurality to the NO. But if we extrapolate this to the country, if Saintonge as a whole votes the same as the Sambre, META may be defeated by 3.4 million votes. #STGReferendum2020

Interesting vote there from the Sambre, personally I was expecting it to give a slight YES plurality. The rural parts of the department gave a weak NO vote like most of the places we've seen. But the department's two main cities, Sainte-Menehould and Trappes, gave surprisingly stronger NO votes than expected. Ste-Menehould, a post-industrial town that would be much affected by META's labour liberalisation, had been drifting leftwards (with its National Assembly seat, Sambre-6, falling to the Nationals last year). Ste-Menehould would give a NO vote, but the strength of the NO vote there was surprising. The intendance of Ste-Menehould was 50% NO, the city proper of Ste-Menehould was like 58% NO. It also didn't help that its MP, Romaric Monsacré, opposed META.

Trappes, on the other hand, was supposed to be the YES' hope in the Sambre. Its MPs, Marie-Maëlys Tauziède-Rodier (Sambre-4) and Anne-Marguerite Mandelot (Sambre-5) were for META. And yet the city of Trappes voted only 49% YES, barely enough to overturn the NO plurality in the more rural parts of the intendance of Trappes.

I agree that this might portend a bad outcome for META/Proposition 5... but we've still got 62 departments to go and I presume, both sides aren't calling it over until it's over. #STGReferendum2020

A good consolation to the YES after losing the Sambre. Capoterre's 56.5% YES is the highest YES vote so far in a department. Not unexpected for a Coalition-voting department. #STGReferendum2020

If Capoterre had the strongest YES so far, more populous Cenise's NO is the strongest now. Two-thirds of the voters in the Cenise rejected META. This is consistent with the department's profile - industrial/post-industrial areas, with the southern part of the department home to the lower-class suburbs of Saintes. #STGReferendum2020

With the vote in the Boëme looking like that, we may have Bethanian-speaking northwestern Saintonge putting in a majority for META. In my experience as a Bethanian, the spectre of immigrants does not loom large in bilingual Bethany+Domnonée than in the rest of Saintonge. But that is not to say that Santonians are xenophobic. Haor Chall's Daily Standard has an excellent article on this.

Dyle's YES vote proves that the South may still deliver for META, while the Dropt's YES mirrors that of the Doire's earlier. #STGReferendum2020

Typical central plains department votes. A weak NO; with the rural areas outvoting the provincial towns. The towns of Tiffauges (Lignon) and Thouars (Ravennes) actually voted by a majority in favour of META, but the rest of their department shouted them down. Interesting vote from the Seudre though. Aurigny (Seudre), for all its size, only delivered a weak YES - only 49.7% YES. It might be that unlike Tiffauges and Thouars, Aurigny contains sizable industries that might be affected by META. #STGReferendum2020

The Arconce is interesting here - it is still the only Loine Valley department south of the Scyotte to vote YES. Its surrounding departments and the adjacent central plains are all voting NO. Part of the credit for the narrow YES win would probably go to the deputy for the fourth electoral circumscription of the Arconce, Ms Louise-Ophélie Bachelard (National). Ms Bachelard was in the news during the campaign period for going door-to-door to explain META to her constituents and urge them to vote for. It paid off: the city of Largentières, which she represents, voted 54% in favour of META. Overall, Arconce-4 voted 52% YES, while the rest of the department of the Arconce voted NO. #STGReferendum2020

The Durance is a surprise, considering that it's an eastern department and that neighbouring Queyras voted YES. The Queyras and the Durance share the same voting tendencies and it's surprising to see these two departments vote opposite of each other. This referendum is very divided, after all.

More info: Apparently, the Durance's rural areas voted strongly NO than the Queyras' rural areas. For example, the highest NO vote in the rural intendancies was Beaurepaire in the Durance (59% NO), while Rarogne in the Queyras only voted 51% NO. Of the cities, Soleure's (Queyras) 52% YES vote was higher than Valence's (Durance) 49% YES. #STGReferendum2020

This is a story of voters not listening to their MP's endorsements. The Sée voted YES despite its most prominent National Assembly deputy, Justice Minister Brice-Thibault Bardoux de Rosencoat, supporting a NO vote. Clearly they were listening more to Foreign Minister Marcelline Tréhet from the other department over. The Taur voted NO even though its rock star deputy (yes, he is literally a rock star), Jourdain Clairault urged his constituents to vote YES. #STGReferendum2020

There is a Bethanian-language question from @CCKerprigent: What would happen if Saintonge rejects META?

My hunch is that the country would apply as a third party member (3PM) in META, like the status of Syrixia and Midir. This would be tenable only if there was a narrow defeat for META. Otherwise, if META was voted down by a strong margin, Saintonge might not even consider applying as 3PM as it's politically unpopular. #STGReferendum2020

This result masks the Lisle's unexpected NO result. For much of the recent decades, the Lisle, up until 2019, was a Coalition-voting department, with even a big chunk of its farmers and rural voters vote Liberal. And yet rural Lisle voted NO: Jarrie 49.8% NO, St-Molf 49.7% NO, Moncey 49.7% NO. The intendance of Torcy-le-Grand, which contains well-off suburbs of Saintes, was the only one to vote YES, but the cities of Torcy-le-Grand, Réaux, and Meaux voted NO (presumably because these cities contain working-class areas). What carried the intendance for YES are those communes which are almost purely composed of well-off suburbs: Fontainebleau, Sandillon, Longjumeau, Lans-l'Hermitage, Louestault, Postillon, Saint-Pardoult-sur-Saine. Meanwhile, industrial Nogent-sur-Lisle voted 57% against META.
