PRESIDENT AMANO'S APPROVAL RATING FALLS TO 51 PERCENT

A recent poll from Yazawa Polls shows incumbent HUP President, Hiroshige Amano with a 51 percent approval rating to a 47 percent disapproval rating. That leaves him with about a net +4 approval rating entirely. That being said, these are not good numbers for any candidate going into an election year. If this trend continues, we can bet to see a strong fight between the Himika Union and Himika Federal Parties this election season.

Senate HUPers rush to pass Fair Wage Act
BY MANAKA MIZUKO | 12/16/2016 7:48 AM
About 2 months after the bill's narrow passage in the National Assembly via a vote of 156-129, Senate Majority Leader Matashi Nemoto announced his intent to speedily move the bill into a vote this week. Following the disastrous midterm election results changing the balance of power in the Senate from in the pocket of the Himikan Union Party and into the pocket of the opposition, the Himikan Federal Party, it put HUPers in the Senate in a frenzy to push out and pass all bills currently on the table before the Congress adjourns and before the new HUF Senators are sworn in. First on their docket is the Fair Wage Act, a bill introduced by Senator Nemoto to establish a minimum wage in Himika.

"I'm 1000 percent confident this bill will pass, we have the votes needed to pass it, and I'm absolutely sure that we'll get those votes.", the Senate Leader responded when asked about the bill in an interview on the Kimiko Post.

With a quick analasis on the members of the Himikan Senate, it appears they do have the necessary votes, with 24 members in the HUP caucus and 23 votes guaranteed to them. That means even though one Himika Union Senator has stated publicly that he will vote against, the bill will still pass with 23 in favor. Although these numbers are in the favor of the bill and HUP, Himika Federal leaders are silently hoping there will be a second defection from the current voting block in opposition.
Hanazawa Harumi, one of the more moderate members of the caucus is expected to vote For the bill, although many HUF leaders hope her moderate streak will work to sway her against.

If the opposition can garner at least 2 defections, then that puts the vote to Vice President Rei Yokito, the designated tie-breaker. Although a fellow HUPer, he is one of the more right-leaning members and has publicly expressed his stance against the bill. So if it were to come down to a 22-22 vote, the Vice President would inevitably doom the bill with his tie-breaking vote.

Thankfully, to Senators like Senator Nemoto, this scenario is somewhat unlikely, given Harumi's announced supprot for the bill. However, anything is possible in the Senate, so we urge our readers to turn on HPN and watch the live coverage to find out what happens.
