Lucy Tan Appoints Former VP as Secretary of State

ATOMIC CITY - In a move that has people scratching their heads, President-elect Lucy Tan has appointed former vice-president Anthony Redtail Clark to the position of Secretary of State. Clark, a Federalist, served as VP to President Forseman, and lost in his bid for election to Tan, a Constitutionalist.

President Tan, in a press release, said that she holds Clark in high esteem and believes he’s the most experienced person for the position, regardless of his political affiliation. Congress has a week to confirm the appointment, but it is very likely Congress will comply.

While most off Tan’s cabinet appointments have been conventional choices from her own party, Clark’s appointment has some worried that the Constitutionalists could be courting the Federalists to form a liberal bloc and push out anti-abolitionist Constitutionalist. If so, they would then be able to repeal and rewrite the ninth amendment, which was added to appease Unionist states so that the constitution could be passed.

President Tan still has three more appointments to name before her upcoming state visit across the Pacific to the Yamato Shogunate. Clark’s appointment will at least guarantee Federalist cooperation while the president is absent of her office in Atomic City.

New Yukon Votes to Uphold Indentured Servitude Laws

Farlight Port flooded by pro-indentured voters​

FARLIGHT - The New Yukon legislature voted in favor of upholding the indentured servitude laws which have been part of its founding laws since becoming a territory in 2513. The vote was held yesterday and was an open vote, with a large turnout of Nationals and Citizens. Farlight Port was overrun by voters flooding in from the countryside in order to cast their vote. The vote was overwhelmingly (4 to 1) in favor of upholding the law.

Governor West was furious at the result, claiming it a sad example of human bigotry. She has also demanded a look into the votes claiming that states like Bonneville and Basin shipped voters north to sway the outcome. The GCR courts have yet to respond. West has been attempting to eradicate indentured servitude in the territory, which has remained low even since its founding, but this vote is likely to see a new influx of pro-indentured immigrants into the north.

Governor West says she will not back down and intends to take the results to the supreme court. There were a few small protests against the results of the vote, but those fizzled out a few hours later. However many were celebrating the result and the bars and saloons of the city were filled throughout the night by revelers. Local Unionist leaders have called for West's resignation. "This was a fair and democratic vote. Governor West is just upset the vote didn't go her way. She's just a sore loser."

The President of the GCR, a staunch supporter of West and the anti-indentured movement, has yet to comment on the vote.

Vote to Admit 12th State Becomes Heated Battlefield on Indentured Issue

ATOMIC CITY - Victoria’s long and arduous path to statehood has at last come to vote before Congress. It’s application had been accepted four years ago and since then the territories legislature has been building their case. What should be a no-brainer decision though, has become mired in the filth and muck of one of the sourest debates of our time: indentured servitude.

Unionists demand that the territory, should it get accepted as a state, be opened up to indentured servitude. This in contrast to what the residents of Victoria actually want. Victoria banned indentured servitude forty years ago and have consistently voted against allowing the practice. Yet this is the hill that the Unionists intend to die upon.

Unionist leadership claims they’re against statehood based on the rise of National Conservatism in the territory, but this is just a transparent excuse to hide their true motivations. What they want is to hold onto their cheap labor base.

Let’s be honest, this is a petty reaction to Pacifica’s admittance which was approved when most of the Unionsts in Congress had been expelled for not upholding their duties. So now, with national support of the practice of indenturing growing ever more out of favor, they are attempting to force a continued balance of power.

Yet there is no balance of power on this issue as all territories, except for New Yukon, abhor the practice. Are the Unionists to block all of their applications for statehood indefinitely? Will we still be debating Victoria’s application when Kitimat-Stikine’s statehood comes up for vote in 2523?
