Why do you “put your two cents in” when it is only “a penny for your thoughts”? What happens to the other penny?

You've got it all wrong. "My two cents" is what you say about your own thoughts, while "A penny for your thoughts" is how someone else describes them, negatively.

It's like haggling, you say your thoughts are worth twice as much as what the other guy says.

To look at alot of them at once, and see the big picture of how they relate.
