The agony of choice!

I've decided to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and decided to invest in one of dem PSWii 360s contraptions machines. But which one is better?! I say this out of genuine ignorance as I've been out of the console games racket for ages; I'm a PC man myself. Until I discovered that GTA IV is coming out soon and the PC specs for Assassin's Creed are absurd. As in, Monty Python level absurd. 3 gig of recommended RAM?! Chortle. Oh wait, you're serious?

So, which should I spend my hard earned cash monies on?

FYI I'm leaning to the Xbox 360 because it's, well, cheaper.

I'd love to get a Wii (it's the cheapest of the lot!), as soon as GTA IV and Assassin's Creed come out on it. That is to say, never.
:(

Apparently the Xbox 360 and PS3 have subspecies, too. Arcade, Premium, Elite, 20Gb, 60Gb? This is a minefield!

Stick with your c64. there are plenty of companies on the net who will repair or replace.

Just think - you could play chuckie egg for ever!

so since i've been working in a vidja games shop for the last 4 years im going to pretend i know more than i actually do.

is the blueray-ness of PS3 worth the extra? depends on whether you have a HDTV. if you dont, its fairly wasted.

otherwise. it depends on preference. generally games that come out on both consoles are better on 360 (easier to program for 3 processors than 7) but that might just be that programmers are more experienced with 360. for me it comes down to game exclusives, 360 having mass effect, halo 3 (just skip it and play COD 4). ps3 having MGS 4, little big planet and ff13.

if you are going online, xbox live is far better, yet ps3 online is free.

if you are keen for american imports (down here its a lot cheaper to import from the states) then ps3 is (nearly) region free. so you could get rock band now. 360 you'll have to wait for local release.

also ps3's are far more reliable, although the newest batch of 360s dont seem to break nearly as much.

as for variants within a console, premium 360 and 60 gig ps3. best value for money. and it feels like im forgetting some other feature of them but im sure i'll remember at work tomorrow.

and clearly the most important factor, IG and I both have 360s but neither have ps3s (yet). therefore a 360 purchase would lead to all sorts of multiplayer ace combat, mercs 2 and possibly rock band shenanigans. CASE CLOSED!

A HDTV?

Hmm, an Xbox 360 Premium you say? Is the 'Arcade' version for muppets?

Right now I'm about 90% set on one of them Xbox 360s; the swaying factor seems to be that most of the games I want come out on both (the new MGS I can take or leave, to be honest, it ain't worth an extra 100 of the Queen's English pounds, and I've never been a big fan of Final Fantasy), so I might as well get the cheaper one.

well the arcade doesnt have a hard drive (only a memory card) which would be fine. if that memory card was big enough to save any games onto. the save file for assassins is larger than the memory card itself. so yeah, go the premium. otherwise you'd end up buying a hard drive later on, which would end up pricer and its a nightmare trying to find one.

also if you end up getting a 360 grab a play and charge kit as well. it'll save you a fortune on batteries.

So you can't save anything on an 'Arcade' Xbox 360, rendering it completely and utterly pointless? Hmm.

Thanks for the console help Syb-Syb, this seventh gen shiznaz sails clear over my bloody head most of the time.

Personally, I bought a laptop 2 years ago, and got me a new game just before christmas last year, the first game I had bought in...approximately...4 years.
I never possessed a game console, and it must be months ago that I played on one for the last time (the game would be supposedly be SingStar vol. 4).

Have you got one yet?
Just got an Xbox 360 this very day!

Got Gears of War, Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed with it, and preordered GTA4.

Gears of War is very nice but quite hard, took me a while to get used to the controls, not used to the 'over the shoulder' cam. Heart carved tree-trunk, chainsaw bayonet, a Locust sawed in half...

Assassin's Creed is simply phenomenal. I was quite worried; it froze up twice in the first little town; but I gave the disc a quick clean and it's fine now, phew. A very, very, beautiful game.

Mass Effect I haven't played yet.

New one...or relatively new; 2007. And deffo the RROD. Three red = dead.

Gonna take it back today and get a new 'un.

I'm pretty pissed off that now I'll have to play all the bloody tutorial levels again!

if you have to take another one back, just ask them to swap the hard drive over. that way you dont lose any save files.

good luck with the new one.

Now there's a good idea.

The new one seems fine; I've got it horizontal on some cardboard struts to allow air underneath it. Seems to get a lot less hot than the old one did, which is a good sign.

PS3 all the way. Gots me the 60GB version it has been phenomenal. Everyone I've known with an X-Box has suffered the ring of death (a couple more than once) and there was no way I was going to sink my cash into such a shoddy dohickey.

Free online play is awesome. Me and the boy have been taking on wanabees from around the world on Rock Band. We're usually OK until someone pulls out Enter Sandman on expert. :P

P.S. Have a Wii and its pretty fun, depending on the game. More of a party machine than a solo gaming console.

:w00t: Blackshear! Rock God apparently...

And I'd tend to agree about the Wii, there are some good single player / online games available, but it is far better as a party machine...

Curse you blackshear. living in one of those countries that has rock band already. i gotta wait until IG sends mine out. but once it happens you keen for a little challenge?

make sure those supports are sturdy Syd, if a 360 (or some ps3s for that matter) get moved suddenly while a disc is spinning inside them they burn a massive ring into the disc. not pretty.

Yay! 360!

I just got an xbox live card this week, but I'm ashamed to punch it in and go live before I've massively inflated my game scores. :pinch:

Also, is it lame of me that Star Wars Battlefront II is still my favorite game to play online?

If you say yes, I will punch you in the face. Through the internets.
