Cyber Nations and fascists

So I just stumbled upon a news article about CN, saying that the apparently fascist alliance "Nordreich" is being investigated by Norwegian authorities. Nordreich describes itself as "conservative", "nationalist" and "European pride", which are usually warning signs around here.

Since a lot of us play CN, and I know that pretend neo-Nazism and fascism are also alive and well in NS, I thought this might make an interesting debate topic.

Does free speech cover this, or should they be stopped? Or is it just another example of people freaking out over make-believe, like the ban-Harry-Potter crowd?

Obscenity varies so much that it's really an case by case, the airing of Britney Spears' attempt at music and Paulie Shore movies in public venues should be punishable by death. But that's just me.

I think it depends on the circumstances. If it remains in game, its distasteful but not a problem. If however it spreads to encompass RL events, then I think the authorities have every right to investigate.

Nordreich is composing a response as I type this out. I have it on good word that the draft of this statement is:

"STFU NORWAY!1!!" possibly followed by the infamous "lol"

Maybe they'll make a witty play on words and call it "N00bway."

And since it's CyberNations, look out for the infamous "I n00k j00!"

I caught this yesterday and thought it was pretty damn funny. I think the juxtaposition of RL politics and RP roleplaying is blissfully ironic.

But to your point I first don't think that fascism of any kind will ever be a threat in either game here, because the game mechanics are so different from real life. Even a dictatorship has to give its subjects a reason to want to stick around, wheras in RL you could just be shot or sent to a labor camp.

I'm pretty sure that Nordreich tries hard not to promote Nazism, but it's still the default choice for nazis who want to play that game. It's a little troubling that there're neo-nazi forums which list them as a potential recruiting ground, but at this point I'd say that it's something that's insensitive but not something I'd want to censor.

I'm not sure if my Harry Potter analogy can be applied at all because, on the whole, comparing national socialism to atheism or even to satanism is ridiculous (says an agnostic anti-fascist :P ), but I know how I'd respond if the Satanic Church started saying they support the series as potential propaganda material.

Namely, "ROFLMAO".

Unfortunately, it's not easy to control who endorses you.

I think the basis of the Norwegian government's overreaction is that Nordreich is also the name of a neo-Nazi band!! They put 2 and 2 together and got 5!!

CN Nordreich are RP european nationalists, not Nazis!! Although I'm sure there are some closet neo-nazis who join them thinking otherwise they keep their nationalism in game and in character form what I have seen!!

They actually wrote a reasonably good reply to the Norwegian media and Foreign Minister which was published in Aftenposten (can't find the link, you all have Google!!) that informed the Norwegian government of their misunderstanding!!

Recruitment videos for alliances in CN are quite common and generally use military imagery!! The Nordreich video at the centre of this did not show any blatant Nazi imagery but did use some German imagery such as the iron cross that predate WWII!!

In a nutshell, Nordreich made a video using the Norwegian national anthem as the background music, Norwegian government went "zomg Nazis!!11!", the media ran the story because "zomg Nazis!1!1!!" and then when the truth came out they ran a follow up explaining things they should have researched in the first place!!

All-in-all, free publicity for Cybernations!!

LOL! Priceless. I have a couple of RL friends who have nations in Nordreich and I assure you that they are definitely NOT nazis or fascists by any stretch of the imagination.
The government of Norway should be utterly ridiculed for their stance on this.
