ONE

Not sure if this is the place to ask about this, just thought it might since it's the literary club and I believe literate ppl can be found here..

So uh, why the heck is "ONE" pronounced as "WAN" but not "Oh-Neh"? It's one of the weirdest thing in English.

To complicate the issue, it used to be pronounced like own as in alone, or [/i]bone[/i]. Stuff changes in English all the time. Much of it doesn't make sense (i.e. rough, dough and slough are ponounced ruff, doe and slew, respectively). Listen to an American movie from 1937 and it sounds like they're from another country.
