You may not have gone across this problem. (Hopefully, you do.) But, the answer to the question:

Is 8 percent of 50 equal to 50 percent of 8?

...or, in mathematical language,...

8% * 50 = 50% * 8 or 0.08 * 50 = 0.50 * 8

...is YES!! Thanks to the associative property of multiplication...

Let us translate 8 and 50 into variables x and y. Here, "x-percent" would be x/100 and "y-percent" would be y/100.

0.08 * 50 = (8/100) * 50
= (x/100) * y
= x * (1/100) * y
= x * (y/100)
= 8 * (50/100)
= 8 * 0.50
= 4

Any questions? Pardon me for my excessive eagerness to learn. I though I've already lost my sense of humor while I'm locked down.

Honestly, as one of the top students in Math for my class, I like to simplify things in order to get the answer.

For (8% of 50...), I simply get 10% of the larger number (which is 5 in this case.) and then move the zero from 50 to 8. Now becoming:

= 8% of 50 = x
= 80% of 5 = x

Now that I have simplified it my own way, I get the answer after doing some simple calculations, and voila!

For the other part of the equation (... 50% of 8), we simply do some normal calculations and we arrive at the answer.

= 8% 50 = 50% 8
= 80% 5 = 4
= 4 = 4!

This is my own way, and is not the proper answer at all, but hey. Screw the rules of math.
