After the Fascist Wars, a group of diplomats, financiers, generals, and lawyers concluded that states needed to be better prepared for significant responsibilities and decision-making in world affairs, to ensure a similar war would never happen again. With this in mind, they founded the Institute for Global Affairs (IGA) in 1955 to afford a continuous conference on international questions affecting states and the world at large, by bringing together experts on statecraft, finance, industry, education, and science.

The IGA is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher dedicated to being a resource for its members, government officials, business executives, journalists, educators and students, civic and religious leaders, and other interested citizens of nations all across the globe in order to help them better understand the world and the foreign policy choices they face which have shaped and continue to shape the world they live in, as well as to provide a forum for diplomats current and former, theorists and thinkers, and others in and surrounding the fields of international relations to meet, discuss, and debate.

The IGA writes unbiased primers on situations in foreign policy, hosts events and forums, and publishes - both online and in print - such magazines as Foreign Affairs, home to the aforementioned primers and papers, and Foreign Policy, where members submit opinion papers, articles, and blogs discussing certain topics. It also works with educational institutions across the globe, especially with political science and international relations programs. The IGA is a non-governmental organization (NGO) operating across the globe, with members from numerous countries large and small. It is primarily headquartered in Kalety, Free City of Kalety.
