A chilly evening never dimmed the lights of the Norvalle Harbor District. Nightclubs with their flashy exterior signs and the brilliance of the casinos illuminated the sky. People from all over the country would take a trip to the city every once in a while to see the sights and press their luck. Visitors often claimed they spotted celebrities, top businessmen, and the nobility too.

That night, the clientele visiting the city was on an even higher level, and no one was going to catch a glimpse of them, for they were going to be far from the likes of the Silver Crown Casino and even the Casino de Norvalle. The stakes were not high, as it was going to be a friendly game, but the discussion between the expected competitors was sure to be important, and perhaps even world-changing.

Away from the glitz and glamour, the lights of the Rivage Palace were mostly dim. Business for the night was concluded; the members of the Chamber of Law had left, the Prime Minister had gone home to her family. Only the staff and palace guards remained, though there were a few more guards than usual this night. The entourage of VIPs, six in all, had been invited to the palace.

At the back of the palace, the occupants of the motorcade disembarked and were greeted by Princess Alice, who escorted them through the center courtyard, around a greenhouse which she pointed out to one particular individual, and then to the front lobby. She pointed towards Chamber of Law and the Chamber of Rule, in a sense giving an abridged tour. Up the grand staircase they would go, however, to the princely family's living area, where not too many were allowed to go. Through the hallways, they would pass by the kitchen, dining rooms, bedchambers, studies and libraries, eventually to the entertainment room.

The entertainment room had everything a gamer or gambler could want. A pool table, televisions, a bar with bottles of liquor and wine at the ready, a roulette table, a blackjack table, and even a pair of racing simulator stations. The room had brilliant white walls, with golden trim, ornate rugs, artwork. A couple of palace guards stood watch at the entrance, which was out of the ordinary, but given the importance of the guests, it was deemed necessary.

A lady croupier, in her early 30s with golden copper hair, in a tuxedo jacket, tie and pants, and with glasses, stood in waiting behind the feature table, the poker table. She wasn't the night's dealer, though, instead only being invited to ensure the game was running smoothly and fairly. It was a rare honor for the woman, otherwise having no business in the princely living area, or even the castle itself.

Instead, another woman was to be seated in the dealer's position, another woman of power who wanted to meet with the group, and for what reason no one other than her knew. As the Heads of State of the Bergum Pact entered the room, Princess Claidie stood in front of the poker table and politely curtsied to each and every one of them.

"Welcome, everyone! I'm happy you could join me tonight," Claidie enthusiastically said. "I hope Alice didn't hold you up too long giving a brief tour of the palace... right, Alice?"

"Only for what was important; just the two chambers, and from the lobby," Alice happily replied.

Claidie nodded, pleased that her sister was punctual in bringing the guests to the table. "Anyways, please, have a seat. Relax, take off a load, and just enjoy tonight.

She then introduced the others nearby. "This is Mélissa Farris, a poker and table games dealer from the Silver Crown Resort and Casino. She'll be ensuring that everything I do is by the book," Claidie said, pointing to the lady croupier.

"A pleasure to have the honor of meeting all of you tonight," Mélissa politely said, curtsying to each guest as Claidie did before.

"And this, who you might recognize if you've watched any of our news, is Isaac. I've asked him to be here to tend to you if you'd like a drink as the night goes on," she said, pointing to the former Speaker, Isaac Castellan, who also would have no business in the palace if it weren't for Claidie's demands.

"Sis, would it be alright if I watched?" Alice asked.

"Sure, you can sit by me," Claidie affirmed.

"Anyways, let's begin."

Beaconsviði, Prydania

"You want me to teach you how to play seven-card hold 'em?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"There's um...a Bergum Pact meeting. We're going to be playing poker."

"How do you not know how to play poker?"

"What do you mean?"

"You grew up around soldiers. Soldiers only do a few things when they're bored, and gambling is one of them!"

"I always just sort of...you know....read. Or played football. Or...well...other stuff."

Axle just chuckled as he finished his dinner, causing Tobias to feel frustrated.

"Are you going to help me or not?"

Skov just chuckled some more.
"And why me?"

"Well I've heard you used to be very good, back in the day. You even had a few stop-overs in some Silean casinos!"

"What's that got to do with anything?"

"Well the poker game's being hosted by the Principality of Sil Dorsett. Neutral ground."

"I haven't been to Sil Dorsett in a long time, Tobias" Axle shrugged.
"And I haven't played seven-card hold 'em in a while either."

"Come on" Tobias begged, causing Axle to roll his eyes. He'd spent enough time with Tobias through his teenage years to know that voice. He didn't want to be unfair to the King. He'd had to grow up fast in a lot of ways. He didn't have a choice. And he had matured, even since taking the Crown. But in some ways? Well, he was still a young man.

"When's the game?"

"In about two weeks."

"Alright that shouldn't be a problem."

"Thank you!" Tobias replied happily.
"I'll make sure Alycia knows everything you're going to teach me."

"You're going to teach your wife how to play poker, after I teach you?"

"Well yeah, she's never played before either."

"Tobias, can you promise me one thing?"

"Sure."

"Don't put down too much money."

Present day
The evening
Norvalle, Sil Dorsett

Tobias had prepared for the possibility of seeing Alice, but he had no idea she'd be giving the group a tour. He blushed just a bit as she pointed out the green house, turning to Alycia to give his wife a soft smile.

"It didn't have to be awkward" he told himself, for all the good that did. Which was little. As always.
Regardless, the night tour proceeded uneventfully aside from an innocuous greenhouse gesture. Besides, the palace was beautiful. Absalonhöll, even on its best day, lacked the elegance Rivage had.
Even so, he enjoyed the causal atmosphere. No suits, or stuffy uniforms. He wore black loafers, black slacks, a white polo shirt under a light dark red jacket with black racing stripes. And a pair of stylish aviator sunglasses folded and hanging from his shirt's collar.

He greeted Claidie, along with everyone else as he took his seat next to Alyica, taking the glasses from his collar and putting them on. He figured no one could tell if he was bluffing if he had sunglasses on the whole game. He felt a bit like Rylond wearing these things inside...at night. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing, but it was the strategy he was going with!

Jadzia hadn't ever been to Sil Dorsett. It seemed like she should have made the trip at least once as they were Arrandal's immediate neighbor. Though she had yet to travel to Cimmeria or Essalanea either. Or the Epiphanes, though that was more understandable. In fact she just didn't travel enough. But now that Arrandal was stable...

So she had come to Sil Dorsett, crossing over the river Randrau. The differences were staggering. Where Arrandal was mostly rural, and still caught in their ancient traditional ways of living, Sil Dorsett was modern urban. Norvalle was a shining city on the sea.

After the tour of the Rivage Palace they were taken to the game room. Here is where the'd play their poker game. She was unfamiliar with poker, but she'd played her fair share of card games in one camp or another growing up. Soldiers loved their gambling and laughed about teaching the little King how to wager and bluff.

Of course she'd taken a quick course on the rules of Seven Card Stud. She even won a couple times against her kitchen staff. Hopefully it was enough not to make a fool of herself. Besides, it wasn't about the game. It was a chance to talk casually with the other leader's of the Bergum Pact.

She took her seat at the table, adjusting her blue silk dress so she'd be comfortable. She then remembered her manors and put on a joyful smile. "I'd like to thank the house of Dorsett for hosting us tonight," she beamed.

Marten stepped out from the vehicle into the brisk Sil Dorsettian night. His attire consisting of a baby blue pale button up shirt that nicely hugged the muscular toning of his body with a mighty tight collar, one button left unbuttoned at the top of course. Then wearing fine designer blue jeans that came from only the best retailers in Maloria with a brown leather belt that adorned a golden centerpiece on it engraved in the shape of a lion with diamonds for teeth and eyes. For shoes he wore brown steel toed boots that had only the freshest and slickest shine on them. Truly an outfit fit for a gambling monarch but of course you can’t forget his high end shades, now that was truly fit for a gambler.

With his beautiful wife by his side they took the tour of the palace. “It was cute” Marten thought to himself as they went through it but the greenhouse in particular was of great interest to him. His father during his youth before he had an affair on his mother with the tour guide’s aunt was an avid gardener. The thought passed his mind as they continued on with their tour on how much time he spent here at the palace, after all his wife (which Marten thought grotesque at the fact that that woman could replace his actual mother) was employed and worked in the building they were going through. Either way the chances of him running into that man and his mistress would be slim or at least he hoped they would.

It humored the Emperor to the point of a smile through the whole process of them going through the palace at the character selected for their “tour” due to their former history. In previous times they had clashed before as foes in the international arena where both were younger incarnations of themselves. Marten a “Malorian Crown Prince” and Alice a “Speaker of the Commons” but both had matured in some ways. Alice no longer was the same traditionalist, arrogant, pompous child of a monarch and Marten was no longer the entitled heir to a throne. The burdens of power had forged them both to be better and newer versions of themselves that required change.

Comfortably he reacquainted himself with everyone in the room but in particular he was extra courteous to Claidie with her potentially being seen as a friend to Malorian interests. A moment before they began after taking his seat next to his wife he made sure to compliment the King of Prydania for his aviators. After that he asked Isaac for his best vodka and readied himself for the game.

Alycia looked back to Tobias and gives him a warm smile, she took her time to look around enjoying the chill air and the abridged tour.
In all honesty, Alycia was just happy to be in Sil Dorsett, out of Astissa and away from the bedlam of Norsian politics and restoration. A chance to just enjoy the sights, see a new country and finally relax. Be herself again. Sil Dorsett itself is beautiful, a jewel in her eyes and even the little sparkles catch her attention. The palace is beautiful and a refreshing change of pace from the White Palace, in Alycia's efforts to make the white palace humble, she may have made it boring. Alycia almost mirrors her husband, wearing black flats, a black long skirt and a white blouse with black frills, casual elegance.

She took her seat at the table with the rest, smiling again as she does. "It is so good to finally meet you both, thank you for inviting me."

Grace trailed next to Marten for the entirety of the tour, listening with quiet interest in the building. She was interested in the architecture of places like these and probably would have found the palace quite extravagant three years before. But now, after those years of rule, and the normalizations of places like these, she also held Marten's silent opinion that it was quaint.

She had chosen between going as flamboyantly as possible, or dressing 'casually'. After being politely reminded by her husband that this was, in fact, a poker game with friends, and not a ballroom dance, she had gone with the casual option. Dressing in pastel colours, she had come in a light pink skirt that came down to flats in the same colour. She also wore a creme coloured yarn sweater, accompanied by a pure silver necklace, with a rather pagan looking charm.

The empress smiled at Jadzia as she sat, before turning her attention to Isaac. She broke the silence she had held from the car and asked for a glass of water, first in Andrennian, before stopping herself, and asking again in Mercanti.

Grace wasn't very good at poker, or gambling in general, but she was still looking forward to the conversations.

Claidie spent a few seconds to shuffle the cards as her foreign counterparts took their seats, and Mélissa explained the game to the party.

"The game is 'Seven Card Hold', and tonight's tournament has a twenty-thousand Livre buy-in," Mélissa informed the guests.

"Nuh uh...," Claidie interrupted, "This isn't for their money. It's for mine."

"Beg your pardon, your highness?" Mélissa asked, confused and oblivious to Claidie's standards.

Claidie then explained the rules. "You'll be given twenty thousand in chips for this game, the lowest denomination being one hundred. You'll compete against each other for placement to earn money for a charity of your choice. The higher you place, the more I'll give to your charity." Claidie then instructed Mélissa to explain the rules of the game.

Isaac, meanwhile, was browsing the various liquors held in the game room, and being a teetotaller himself, really didn't know one liquor for another. Marten had requested their best vodka, but he had no idea what to pull. He had to ask Claidie. "Hon, what vodka do you like the best?"

Alice's eyes widened, herself shocked and made uncomfortable by Isaac's casualness and how he called her sister "hon". "How inappropriate!" she thought to herself. Here Isaac was, in the presence of powerful leaders, and he had referred to the most senior of his nation's governors in an impersonal manner. Claidie, on the other hand, didn't seem bothered by it, regardless of the fact that she was in the presence of equals. Rather than admonishing her partner, she carried on like nothing out of the ordinary happened and gave Isaac the recommendation he needed.

"I like the Theodore's Homemade," she replied. Turning towards Marten, she tried to reassure him of that choice. "Very smooth, not one you want to use as a mixer. Trust me, it's one to sip straight.

"Anyways, we'll start with the blinds at four hundred and eight hundred (400 / 800). I'll first deal a single card to decide who starts with the dealer button."

Claidie then dealt a single card to each of the players. A 2 of Clubs to Tobias, a 4 of Diamonds to Alycia, a 10 of Spades to Marten, an Ace of Clubs to Grace, a Queen of Clubs to Jadzia, and a Jack of Diamonds to Catherine.

"Grace wins the dealer's button. Jadzia, you'll start as the small blind, and Catherine, you'll put in the big blind." Claidie then scooped up the cards, shuffled, and dealt the opening hand.

Tobias chuckled a bit and thanked Marten for the compliment. He'd heard that wearing glasses could cut down on your "tell," and they looked pretty damn cool too, if he did say so himself.

"Charity?" Tobias thought to himself. He didn't know anything about that, and glanced around. Didn't seem anyone else did either. It was hard to argue though, and there were a few that dealt with aid to Prydanians and Norsians in the wake of the conflicts that had rocked northern Craviter.

He didn't have much time to ruminate on it though, catching what was going on with Marten's vodka, an eyebrow raising under his aviators as Isaac had casually referred to Claidie as "hon." It didn't bother him really, it was just unexpected. He had no idea Claidie was in a relationship. He still glanced at Alice, noticing some distress and held back an urge to chuckle before turning to Alycia to give her a warm smile.

He glanced down at his cards, thumb on the edge of them, still a bit unsure if he knew what he was doing. He "hmm"'d to himself before looking up at Isaac.
"Could I get some brennivín, on the rocks?" he asked, referring to Prydania's most well-known local spirit.
"If you don't have it some Andrennian akvavit will do" he said pleasantly.

He bent the cards up, seeing his initial hand. He remembered what Axle had told him, and set them back down, tossing in eight chips.
"Call" he said matter of factly.

Alycia smiled a bit as she glanced up at Claidie "Charity is quite noble.." Alycia thought, there were several charities that could benefit from that but it put a sour note to the games. Now Alycia had the vague inclination she needed to win.

Alycia turned her head to Tobias and returned the warm smile. Hearing Claidie be called 'hon' was a refreshing little surprise, and one Alycia was happy to know the feeling of.
She peeked down at her cards, Tobias tried to impart some of Axles lessons to Alycia, bless him and his loving attempt but not a lot of it really stuck to her.
"Fold." she declared as she relaxed a little bit more. "Can you see anything wearing Sunglasses in here?"

Marten paid no particular care towards Isaac calling Claidie “hon.” In all honesty he thought it quite humorous that out of everyone the Princess could have, she chose Isaac Isaac Castellan. Then again, at one time Marten himself considered her sister as a suitable match to be his empress.

He took a sip of his vodka and looked around the room when his turn came. He let the suspense build up, purposely turning his head to everyone with his shades on as to show he was looking at them straight in the face. Then one more time he took another drink of his vodka.

“Call” he said then looking at his wife and smiling.

Grace was very still as everyone else made their choice. Once it came to her, she looked at her husband, then glanced again at her cards.

She wasn't very good at poker, though she knew how to play. Grace was too afraid to take the risks, so she never reaped the rewards.

So she made the decision then and there to go against her cautious tendencies. "Call," she said, staring back at Marten. Though she was somewhat clueless looking, Grace had a good poker face. Hiding emotions wasn't hard.

"Jadzia, sweetheart?"

Jadzia shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She could sit with grace in front of her entire kingdom, but put her in front of her peers and she felt like a child. It didn’t help she was the youngest.

“I’ll have a Zmeuravin?” Jadzia said, trying to order raspberry wine, one of her favorite drinks. But then she realized to everyone here she was too young to drink as well. So she laughed, pretending it was a joke. “Ha, gotcha. No, I’ll have a cola instead.”

She drank her soda thoughtfully as the cards were dealt. She looked at her cards, planning how she would play. Watching everyone either fold or call. Was that good or bad? She thought people would be betting.

After Grace had played, she felt anxious, wondering what she would do. She scratched the lobe of her ear. Finally, she decided to just play it safe. “I’ll call,” she declared, tossing in chips to match the blind.

She then turned to Grace. “How is little Alexander doing?”

Catherine had arrived slightly later than the rest as she'd had an issue convincing security she was who she said she was. A common issue when she insisted on wearing an overall in the style common to the workers of Cogoria, the only affectation she wore with it was a bright red wide scarf work as a belt which was all the rage with the ladies working in factories in Lupagrad. Then of course there had been the back pack.
As the others had made small talk incomprehensible to Catherine, she had taken out and set about putting together a Military grade radio. and putting on the headset and placing a microphone and speaker on the table. As the Catherine's turn came around she mumbled into the microphone in front of her in Cogorian. A brief delay followed by a a bombastic male voice erupting from the speaker "The great Comerade Catherine,Co Chairperson of the Party and Politburo, Little Rodina, Major of the 42 Rifle regiment of the People's Cogorian Guard representing the workers and peasants of Cogoria is grateful to have been invited to this social gathering. In response to the mighty hand tha-" Catherine cut the translator off with a hurried exchange into the microphone, a scuffle could be heard over the speaker, when a different voice took over the translation. "Apologies, this translator will now convey my words how I say them. As I had tried to say, I will raise by 1500, and thanks for having me." Catherine still stared at the radio a bit concerned, as she had no way to know whether the foreign directorate had followed her instruction this time, though she did think the voice coming from the speaker sounded a lot calmer than whatever partyman had been on first.

Tobias adjusted his aviators as he observed Catherine. She wasn't so odd to him. He was used to mechanics and soldiers putting together makeshift equipment. He used to "help" with that when he was little. In the way a small child "helps" with tasks adults set out to do. He smiled a bit as he sipped his brennivín, startled by the bombastic voice coming from the radio. It reminded him of Syndicalist propaganda, and he took another sip before leaning his elbow on the table, resting his chin between his thumb and index finger.
He could follow the game so far. He tried to remember Axle's advice as he bent the cards up to glance down- the glance expertly hidden by his shades. He nodded.

"Co-Chairperson Catherine" he said in a friendly tone in accented Mercanti, "I'm glad you could join us."
He looked around the room briefly before focusing back on Catherine.
"I'll raise you 1800."

Marten clicked his boots off the floor. Thump. Thump. Thump. He wasn’t expecting the boy-king to raise and now it had put him into a precarious position. Thump. Thump. Thump.

His eyes moved slowly from the radio to Tobias. He hoped that his shades protected his eyes so that his competition wouldn’t be able to tell his reaction. He wondered if it was working. One more time he took a nice sip of his vodka. Let it soak in in his mouth.

“I’ll call” he said.

Grace looked over at her husband, squinting slightly at him. The Empress reminded herself of her cards, lifting them for a moment, before setting them back down. She was not comfortable with all the raising.

"I'll fold," Grace decided.

Slightly relieved to be out of the round, then looked back to Jadzia, smiling. "Oh, Alexander. He's getting so big. He turned 2 just a few months ago." Grace looked slightly proud, turning her head to her husband to see if he was listening to the conversation. "Pretty soon we're going to have to organize some sort of pre-school."

Jadzia smiled to hear her little cousin was doing well. The world beyond Arrandal seemed so much more brighter and happier. One day she hoped her own nation would be such a place.

She looked at her cards again, thinking. She hoped she wasn't giving anything away to the more seasoned players at the table. After a few seconds she made her decision. She tossed some chips into the middle, matching the current bet. "I guess I'll stay in."

Catherine as worried, to be frank she had no idea if her cards were even any good. But deciding it hardly mattered as the money was going to charity anyway, she leant her elbow s onto the table and drawled in her best imitation of Sean Dwyer the Cogorian film star “Taispean dom cad atá agaibh. Glaoim” the translator playing along mimicked it also “Show me what you’ve got. I call”. With that she flipp her cards revealing a 10 of spades and a 3 of hearts. She tried to keep the serious face but her cards were so poor a single snort at the silliness of it still managed to escape.

Claidie was in shock when Catherine flipped her cards over. The hand wasn't over; it had only just begun! She wasn't sure what to do after Catherine's blunder. She looked over at the presiding croupier and asked how instances of a revealed hand are handled.

"Well, it depends on each casino's rules," Mélissa explained. "Some casinos would declare the player's hand dead and any chips put in forfeit. Some casinos would allow the hand to continue, and in those places, early reveals can even be used for tactical reasons. Since this is your own personal casino, it's up to you."

"Alright then," Claidie said, starting to think of her options. "Comrade Rokotov, remember that the way the hand is dealt is... two cards to each, a round of betting, three cards revealed, another round of betting, a fourth card revealed, another round of betting, and a final card revealed before final bets are made.

"As far as that early reveal is concerned, I'm going to let it go and we'll play on. Hope your gamble works, Catherine."

She burned a card off the deck and the flipped three cards over, a 2 of Diamonds, a Jack of Clubs, and a 5 of Hearts.

"Your Majesty -- Jadzia, it's your move," Claidie announced.
