I certainly wouldn't be averse to the idea. My purpose here is mainly to meander around Wikipedia and leave a trail of bread crumbs behind me so I can find the way back out.

5 certainly isn't restrictive in the sense that it's difficult to do. I don't think anyone here has ever been in danger of running beyond 5 links. About the only thing restrictive about it is what you mentioned above and I can't think of an easy way to remove that particular flaw without greatly complexifying the game.
Restrict specific paths of 3+ links to one use per 5 posts or some such? How would we keep track, especially in a way that made easy sense to a newcomer? You might be forced to edit your OP to keep things easily accessible to whoever, otherwise every post will have to list each such link path and the number of posts it's been since it was first used, but maybe that wouldn't be too...Gah. It's late and I dunno.
