Welcome to For the King, to Valhalla! The purpose of this RP project is to serve as a place for me to post stories from the Prydanian Civil War, which ran from 2002-2017.

I had contemplated a thread dedicated to the War, but the fact remains that fifteen years is a hell of a long time. There's so much I want to talk about, but a lot that's simply minutia.
Then Sil Dorsett's wonderful Silean Short Stories thread inspired me. I don't need to RP fifteen years! I can just write stories that took place during the War as I'm inspired to write them.

I love collaboration, but this will mainly be a one-man job. I'll be writing stories as I think of them that take place during the War. Chronology will not be a concern. That said? If you have an idea? Run it by me. I can't promise you I'll go for it, but you won't know if you don't ask.

Anyway, this thread will serve as a means for people to read up on the main characters and their general roles in the narrative.

The Characters

William Aubyn

William Aubyn's rise began in 1985, becoming the new, young leader of the Conservative-Agrarian Alliance. He posed the first challenge to Stephen Toft's Social Commonwealth government, and quickly gained a reputation as a man who could walk the line between opposing the government and remaining loyal to the King that supported said government.
Anders III, however, became increasingly supportive of Toft's Social Commonwealth policies as the 1990s marched on. Aubyn reached out to Free Democrat politicians, building a network of anti-Social Commonwealth forces that aimed to topple their government and restore Parliamentary democracy to Prydania.
Anders III and Stephen Toft had provoked the Syndicalists to action, however, forcing Aubyn to shift his alliance to one resisting the totalitarian socialism that now gripped the nation. The survival and rescue of Prince Tobias allowed the Front of National Unity to claim a degree of legitimacy and Aubyn became the de facto leader of anti-Syndicalist resistance.
He would also become the man who raised the young Prince.

Axle Skov

xiUhaqZ.png

Axle Skov doesn't exist...officially He was an officer in the Royal Marines before being recruited into the Öryggi og Sérstakur Upplýsingaöflun (Security and Special Intelligence) and made a government agent. Skov, as an ÖSU agent, became an unperson. He participated in a number of assignments in Craviter and Iteria, killing for his government during the 1980s.
He retired in the mid 1990s, but fell in league with William Aubyn's movement to resist the increasingly fascist reign of Anders III. The Syndicalist coup forced his hand, and he staged a daring rescue of a seven year old Prince Tobias from Absalon's Palace.

Tobias Scylfing Loðbrók

ZkEUdxu.png

Tobias is the son of Prince Robert Loðbrók and Princess Hanna Loðbrók. His father Robert the younger brother of King Anders III.
Tobias' world was turned upside down in August of 2002 when the Syndicalist Party under Thomas Nielsen staged its coup and seized power. Most of the Royal family was executed. The seven year old Tobias would have been done away with too if not saved by Axle Skov and delivered to the anti-Syndicalist Front of National Unity under the care of William Aubyn. Aubyn raised the Prince as best he could, while also overseeing an anti-Syndicalist resistance movement that aimed to see Prydania's monarchy- and parliamentary democracy- restored.

Thomas Nielsen

Thomas Nielsen was born and raised in the small town of Rakjandi. Formally an agricultural town, it had become a coal town following the industrial revolution. Nielsen worked around or in the mines for most of his life, and took a keen interest in Union activities, becoming the Miner's Union's local chapter organizer. He was convinced to run for Rakjandi's seat in the Alþingi (Parliament) on the Syndicalist ticket, leaving the pits behind for the national capital. The wealth of Býkonsviði did little to temper Nielsen's passion, however, and he remained committed to the local concerns of his constituents.
Nielsen became a leading voice in the "Radical" wing of the Syndicalist Party, arguing for a more overly revolutionary platform. He was one of the "Forty-Five of Seventy-Six," one of forty-five Syndicalist Alþingi members who called for the abolition of the monarchy and nationalization of all major utilities in 1976. Nielsen's stock in the Syndicalist Party rose when the Crisis of '82 polarized the Prydanian electorate, allowing the Radicals to seize control of the Party. The Syndicalists, under the leadership of Nielsen, became the second largest party in the Alþingi, becoming the Official Opposition to the government formed by Stephen Toft's Social Commonwealth Party.
Nielsen garnered a reputation as being a man of the people, and a champion against tyranny as he led his party against the increasingly dictatorial Social Commonwealth government. He often sparred with the National Union Conservative-Agrarian/Free Democrat coalition led by William Aubyn.
Nielsen's strength, however, lay in a willingness to abolish the system while Aubyn wished to reform it. His Syndicalists seized control of Prydania in the summer of 2002. The entire Social Commonwealth government was executed, along with King Anders III and most of the Royal family, after formal hearings his provisional government held. Anders III's death allowed Nielsen to proclaim the Syndicalist Republic of Prydania, with himself as Chairman of the Syndicalist Presidium.
Nielsen also signed the death warrant for Prince Tobias Scylfing Loðbrók, believing that even a seven year old heir to the Loðbrók crown undermined Syndicalist authority and legitimacy.

Jannik Leiftur

q7q1pmP.jpg

Jannik Leiftur was, in many ways, Thomas Nielsen's hatchet man. He did what had to be done to unify a fractured Syndicalist Party behind its new revolutionary leader. Nielsen's firebrand speeches made him something of a folk hero, but it was Leiftur who did the dirty work necessary to establish a Syndicalist network throughout the country to resist the Social Commonwealth government of the 1980s and 1990s and eventually lead a coup in 2002.
Leiftur was made the Secretary of the Interior under the new Syndicalist regime. The position offered him a wide purview, allowing him to continue in the role that he had served up until then; as the man who did what Nielsen needed to have done behind the scenes. He oversaw the collectivization of agriculture, the re-distribution of land, and the suppression of organized religion. Leiftur proved to be effective at these tasks, being a highly ideological man who placed the ends above the means at almost every turn.

Kaleb Stahl

QsD8ov3.png

Kaleb Stahl is not an ideological man. He is, however, a moral one. And the Syndicalist seizure of power in the summer of 2002 seemed to be morally justified as the Social Commonwealth government of Stephen Toft showed no willingness to reform. Stahl, then a Lieutenant in the Royal Prydanian Army, played a leading role one of the many Soldiers' Committees. These committees sided with the Syndicalists, effectively crippling the Army's ability to crush the coup.
This loyalty earned Stahl recognition from from the higher-ups in the new Syndicalist government. Stahl would have been content to continue on as a career officer, but Jannik Leiftur had other plans. Stahl's seeming loyalty was something that could be harnessed, and Leiftur knew exactly what it needed to be used for; the assassination of Prince Tobias Loðbrók, by whatever means necessary.
