TNP Nation
McMasterdonia
I've combined the history of McMasterdonia with the proposed history of nations who are involved in the Kianese Empire. This has thrown out some of the dates, and some of the titles (some titles may go from being Emperor Louis II to the XIV or something later). I also need to add a lot more rulers, which I will get too later.

Members of the Kianese Empire (So Far):
Plembobria
Archegnum
The Lancerian Empire
New Haven America
Esplandia
Anola (my nation)
Salvarity
Ravenscrown
Great Bights Mum (not for long)
Myroria
McMasterdonia
Dallicania

I've tried to accommodate everyones wishes as best as I can. If you would like changes or additions, let me know.

I have literally nothing on Dallicania yet. I need to know how you became a member and when. As for the others, there are obvious gaps. We could have more than one massacre in Myroria for instance. More than one attempt to leave. We could have a war against a nation that involves all vassals of the Empire.

I also have a google doc here. If you would like to edit it from there, simply request editing rights.

I was thinking that eventually we could compile this into like an encyclopedic style history of the Empire. Each of us editing various sections and compiling it all together into a very detailed factbook. Perhaps that is too detailed though.

I intend to edit this history into 6 or 7 eras of the Empire eventually too.

637BC: Eruroth proclaims the ‘Kingdom of Boraea’ in the north of the former Archipelegian Kingdom, with the backing of the Kianese Empire (McMasterdonia). The Emperor intervenes of behalf of the King of Boraea and instead threatens to award the title to him. Quachel withdraws after similar threats from the other Kingdoms on Archlancer.
519BC: Quachel occupies the port city-states of Asimi, Defteros and Igatea on the western coast of Southside. This is supported by the Empire. Lorem protests but is too weak to intervene. The move brings the inland cities under economic subservience to Quachel.

500BC: In this symbolic year, the Emperor of McMasterdonia officially crowns the Iget of Quachel ‘High King’ over all Archegnum. This worries the Boraeans, but to the Empire, they are a separate entity in their own right and detached from Archipelegian issues, despite their history. In this, the Emperor is wrong. The High King refuses to recognise the new state as an ‘Archipelagian Kingdom’ for this reason.

Though the navies are defeated within 6 months and the war at sea won by the Empire, the damage and delays the ships caused what many historians argue to be the loss of the war on land for the Empire.

1582-The Grand Duchy of Valdayne wins its independence after a three year struggle and becomes the Kingdom of Esplandia

I said it was a founding member in 800BC. I'll change the name to the Grand Duchy though.

Just putting this in, before disappearing...

Dallicania could've followed the history with its neighbours (entered the Empire in 800 BC), but its integration was tenuous - it was a tributary state at best and a rebellious backwater at its worst. I'm not sure if it's plausible, but the Dallicanian revolution/independence could've come as a reaction against Rethenism, yes? After which the relationship becomes looser - somewhere between a tributary state (like the Indian statelets under the British Raj) and an independent but junior state (like Siam in the 19th century), which would've allowed it to keep its own customs and traditions while being largely at peace.

You forgot to fix the old Syrixian names into the Indianesque names :P

But I digress; that's quite minor. I was thinking in the old days there would be a sort of rivalry between the Kianese and the Syrixians. The Syrixians had a colonial empire and a martial culture back in the day. Many Emperors were notoriously afflicted with hubris and the Golden Palace today shows it, being one of the world's largest imperial palaces.

Plus it would be kind of cool for a group of nations (especially McM) that used to hate Syrixia to now like it. It'd be a happy story.

I had missed that part. That means Valdayne was Kianese for a long time, so when the Hastfrads (the currently dominate culture in Esplandia) began migrating into the region in the 1200s they would have intermingled with the Kianese rulers.

Is that too long? Completely open to changing it to something that suits you. I just wasn't sure how early you wanted to be fitted into it all.

Also we had a policy of defending nations who were invaded by foreigners. I know that Syrixia invaded Esplandia, it is likely we would have opposed that. Anyway to work that in?

Syrixia invaded after we were independent so maybe your nation was still mad at us.

Also maybe we became part of the empire in 600 ad and the Hastfrads were granted rights to settle in Valdayne in 1200s to stop raids on other colonies (kinda like the Normans in France).

I requested access to the Google doc; here's some rough dates and events. These can be changed or moved around if necessary.

c. 775 BC: Shortly after the Pelagis Rebellion is put down, Kouroush of Castello writes in a published history: 'the Myrorians to the north, after the death of one of their own, cook his ashes into bread and eat his remains.' The story is of questionable veracity but spreads through word-of-mouth.

c. 430 BC: A rebellion in eastern Myroria briefly gains control of the lands surrounding Thanelen.

c. 427 BC: The rebellion is put down by Kianese forces. Along with state-sponsored massacres, organized pogroms murder hundreds of Myrorians and looters steal their property.

c. 320 CE: The bubonic plague spreads quickly through the Kianese Empire. Both in the Myrorian homeland and across the empire, their religious practices involving contact with dead bodies cause the disease to be spread particularly quickly among their community. Others blame the Myrorians for the disease and more pogroms occur.

c. 580: During another bubonic plague outbreak, a Myrorian sect that ritually bathes before and after funerals sees fewer deaths. The sect grows, but continued to be blamed for sickness. Rumors spread that Myrorians are poisoning the water supply with dead bodies.

c. 1100: Another rebellion occurs in Myroria. The war lasts nearly ten years, and the nation unites behind a single elected leader - a Sedera - for the first time. Eventually, the rebellion is put down by the Kianese and afterwards the government systematically enters villages and cities and kills one out of every three men, and one out of five women. Nearly one hundred thousand die. In Myrorian culture, it becomes known as the Great Theft.

c. 1350: Following a series of small revolts and rumors of a greater uprising, the Emperor grants Myroria some autonomy. The three largest families in the nation - the Great Houses - rule as a small council but there is no elected Myrorian leader - the Council merely advises the Emperor, who still maintains a hold on the country.

c. 1400: In stark contrast to previous opinion, Myrorian doctors with their intricate knowledge of anatomy find themselves of some value in the Kianese homeland to wealthy patients. There are rumors that one surgeon in particular, a former mortician, can surgically remove a baby from the womb of a woman in troublesome labor and preserve both lives.

c. 1550: Scattered unrest in Myroria - more autonomy is granted. The Council elects its first Sedera, Resdain, who rules Myroria but ultimately reports to the Emperor.

c. 1564: A pogrom breaks out in Cape El, urged along by minor city officials. After a petition to the Emperor from Resdain and the Council of Great Houses, the Kianese execute the bureaucrats.

c. 1675: Another plague outbreak decimates the Empire. The population in Myroria, previously growing well, drops significantly - its largest drop since the Great Theft. Scattered pogroms follow, but most Myrorian cities by this point have an ethnic Myrorian majority.

c. 1700: The War of the Prides breaks out. The Council and Sedera hesitate to act, but after rumors of a deal struck with the Kianese, endorses Isabella.

January 1, 1740: After Isabella wins the War of the Prides, Myroria is granted formal independence.

1951: King Louis XIV reverses hundreds of years of policy and publicly acknowledges the Great Theft as a genocide, greatly improving McMasterdonian-Myrorian relations.

Great work, McMasterdonia!

I noticed this:

1598: A bloody war on land between the legion and the Northmen rages on. The Legion forces still retain control of most of The Kingdom of Napier and the *insert name here kingdom of arch's territory*.
1599: The Kingdom of Napier and the eastern quarter of the *insertname here kingdom of arch's territory* are lost. The Legion puts up a strong defense every inch of the

The name should be 'Boraea', the northernmost province of Archegnum in modern day. Just to let you know.

Once I have discussed certain key issues with YrKidding, I can complete Archegnum's timeline for the later stages of the Kianese Empire. Things like how Boraea was affected by the 'Northmen Wars'; when the province seceded back to Archegnum; how its culture was preserved and refined; how the relationship between the central Kianese government and Archegnum developed, especially after the new Archiplegain Kingdom was officially redeclared once Boreae was reintegrated. Such an event would create a pretty prestigious and politically strong entity within the Empire, perhaps not always in league with the Kianese Emperor.

Also, would you mind changing the places where it says 'Iget' to 'Imperyton', please? I am working on the Archegnuman language at the moment, and that is now the word for 'leader' or 'ruler'. Just when you get the time.

Thanks :)

Arch!

I see you reading this thread right now, if you can I'm on the IRC right now. Just jumped on if you're free?

Yrkidding:

I fear that I may have been AFK at the time :/

For several hours. I was gardening.

I'll periodically check the IRC from now on, in the hope of catching you. Then we can finally get this history sorted!

What was name of the ruling dynasty of the empire or was it the house of McMaster? Also which emperor was ruling around 1580-1582, was it Leopold VII or VIII since the timeline doesn't say when their rules changed?

[ALSO PLACING TIMELINE HERE]

Since I've taken NHA's spot, I created a history replacing his. He didn't have much to begin with. Adapted the rest of my prehistory to align with yours as the most opportune time to declare independence.

1004BC: War of the Clans begins. Clans of Konjah, Korath, Anntak, and Buto fight each other for land, resources, women, and bragging rights. Each clan seeks to bring the rest under their rule.

902BC: Nearly a century later, the Clans of Konjah, Korath, Anntak, and Buto become united under Warlord Vagh of Buto. The males of the ruling families of Konjah, Korath, and Anntak are publicly executed. Warlord Vagh take their wives and daughters as his own. By doing this, he merges the bloodlines of the other clans with his, ending the War of the Clans.

755BC: The Kianese Empire invades Buto.

749BC: The Kianese captures the ruling family of Buto and kills them. Creates the Grand Duchy of Bustos under the Kianese Empire. It initially only holds 4 city states, including its capital/port Athene, home of the Grand Duke.

Grand Duke Markus, the First of Bustos, formerly of Castello, Conquerer of Buto goes on and creates three more Great Houses under his to rule over the remaining city states. Also creates the High Council, with each Great House gaining a seat.

Spends much of its history expanding the grand duchy through annexation and conquest towards the north when not involved in Kianese's wars.

1240: Athene, capital and main port of the grand duchy, increases in statue as Floregasque trading ships traverse between McMasterdonia and Floresque. Naval power begins to become a matter of importance for the Grand Duchy of Bustos.

1500s-1700s: High Council creates a trading company called Bustos Eastern Shipping. Considered the first multinational corporation in the world, as well as the first company to issue stock. As ship technologies advance, seafaring trading becomes an economical boon for the Grand Duchy; further placing importance on naval power.

When income from the Bustos Eastern Shipping grows, McMasterdonia place higher taxes on the Grand Duchy of Bustos. The navy, and sequentially the marines, of the Grady Duchy of Bustos are often called upon to fight in the wars of the Kianese Empire. This sows anger and dissent of the High Council and its peoples, which becomes the basis for its declaration of independence.

Bustos Eastern Shipping strengthens control of trading routes and diversify their interests by building their own factories, buying farms, and investing in ship building and arms manufacturing. They also contract the Grand Duchy's navy and marines for escort/garrison of its trading routes and ports. The trading company becomes involved in many aspects of the grand duchy.

1700: War of the Prides break out.

July 4th, 1730: As the War of the Prides continue for decades, the High Council grows tired of supporting McMasterdonia and recalls all of its levies and declares independence. The Grand Duchy of Bustos reorganizes into the Allied States of Bustos.

Let me know if this works or if any dates need changing.

Hi Esplandia!

I am definitely still working on this too. So hopefully many nations can kind of fit in near where I will be and we can keep this going.

1565: "The 2nd Northmen Rebellion" begins with the Kingdoms of Massena, Berthier, and Ferey. With the chokepoint of the Empire on their side the forces of the rebellion push deep into the Kingdom of Soult.
1566: The Imperial Legion pushes the rebellion back to the borders of the Kingdom of Ferey. The rebellion holds here and isn't pushed back any farther through the summer, then winter.
1567: Seeking to repeat what the Imperial Legion achieved in 1513 during the 1st Northmen Rebellion, a large push is organised for the spring. With Ferey's chokepoint defenses on the rebel side, massive casualties are inflicted in the failed Legion attempt. The rebellion exploits the weakness and counterattacks into the Kingdom of Soult in the summer. Facing defeat the Empire seeks peace with a large rebellion for the first time in its history. The Northmen accept and form the Kingdoms Of The North in Autumn 1567.

Since I've been reworking my history I've pushed back the date of my independence to around this time. I'm thinking my war could have started in spring of 1566 (Sherwin I would crown himself king on Spetember 7) and the war would then go into spring of 1569. Since the empire would be reeling from their defeat, it would go a long way in explaining why the empire didn't just send their entire force to squash the rebellion in Valdayne (Esplandia).

I've been working on reasons for why the rebellion would start. My thoughts are that the emperor could have demanded the lords of Valdayne raise an army to come fight in the war and when Sherwin refused, the emperor likely could have attempted to strip him of his titles, sparking the revolt. What do you think McM?

1565: "The 2nd Northmen Rebellion" begins with the Kingdoms of Massena, Berthier, and Ferey. With the chokepoint of the Empire on their side the forces of the rebellion push deep into the Kingdom of Soult.

I think that would work. The Emperors would often also demand that their lords sending their heir to the Capital for training and service in the Imperial forces. This could be linked in too? Perhaps this demand was refused, so the Emperor revoked the titles of Sherwin, which led to Sherwin raising his army.

How does the war end? I've been thinking that many of the former imperial lands were lost in battle, might be good to come up with an alternative option? Perhaps Sherwin agrees to matrilineal marriage into the Imperial House making all his heirs of the Imperial dynasty. Just a suggestion :)

I Definately like the idea of Sherwin and his son Irwin both having been trained in the capital. I've always thought that Sherwin would have lead forces on behalf of the emperor. By the time of the rebellion though all three of his sons were adults and married, so that's probably a no on matrilineal marriage which would be something Sherwin wouldn't agree to anyway.

Perhaps after the Battle of Auguston, which obliterated the Imperial forces in Esplandia, the emperor would concede Esplandian independence and later work towards creating a stronger alliance.

A later emperor could eventually try to invade and retake Esplandia but it's defeated and this could lead to a full on treaty that sees Esplandia agree to a military and trade alliance or some such. Perhaps then a marriage could also happen.

Hmm, I think that could work.

I think I will offer one other suggestion to add to the intrigue.

Perhaps Sherwin was very close to the McMasterdonian Emperor who ruled while his son was being trained in the Capital. This Emperor dies under suspicious circumstances and is succeeded by his son or brother who is widely seen as a tyrant. As such Sherwin refuses the revocation which comes after Sherwin refuses the demands for children (or grandchildren) to be trained in the Capital fearing that they could be tortured or imprisoned.

Perhaps we could say that this new Emperor attacks Esplandia, is defeated and subsequently is murdered (a plot by many nobles, including the Archbishop of Cape El - Flemingovianist pope) while recovering from wounds sustained during the war. He is then succeeded by younger brother or sister, who attempts to rectify the damage done by seeking a marriage based alliance with Esplandia.
